The Only Real Need

Mary:
This morning we read from A Course in Miracles:

The Holy Spirit leads me unto Christ, and where else would I go? What need have I but to awake in Him?

Then follow Him in joy, with faith that He will lead you safely through all dangers to your peace of mind this world may set before you. Kneel not before the altars to sacrifice, and seek not what you will surely lose. Content yourself with what you will as surely keep, and be not restless, for you undertake a quiet journey to the peace of God, where He would have you be in quietness. (T-13.VII.14:2-3, 15:1-3)

What stood out to me the most is, “What need have I but to awake in Him?” In this world it seems like I have so many other needs that demand my attention other than awakening in Him. But in truth this is my only real need.

When I join with the ego thought system, the needs or problems are very effective distractions that encourage me to think that all these other things are more important than waking up to my true Self. But here I am reminded that the reverse is true. Waking up from the dream is all important. That is why it is so important for me to return to the humility of remembering that of myself I know nothing. As I am willing to practice stepping back and listening rather than deciding on my own what is important, I will return again to peace.

The Light of peace has a way of dissolving ego thoughts and showing me how meaningless they are. What seemed a mountain now becomes a mole hill. I return again to remembering that I am safe, no matter what problems appear to show up in the dream. As I choose one more time to accept peace, I am filled with the awareness that nothing has really happened to change God’s one Son. I am reminded that separation is not real and that only Love is real. My conflicted mind is quieted as I once again choose peace to lead me away from fear and again return to the quietness of truth.

Robert:
What stood out to me in this paragraph from ACIM was, “Seek not what you will surely lose.” Earlier in this section we were told that everything we make in the world begins to decay as soon as it is made. There is nothing in this world that is eternal. So if I value any form in the world, I am seeking what I will surely lose.

When I redirect my value to giving and receiving Love, I am valuing the eternal. As I practice stepping back into peace and opening my mind and heart to the Holy Spirit’s teaching, I learn to recognize the valuelessness of form and easily lay it down.

Sometimes some forms seem especially important. They seem to be essential to my survival. But that very statement indicates that I believe I am vulnerable and capable of loss. This is another misplaced value, for what God created me to be is invulnerable and eternal. Love is changeless.

Through the forgiveness process of letting go of the false beliefs about what I am, I return to Love. This process is what time is for now. There is no greater value for time than to use it, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to heal my mind.
