Letting Peace Lead the Way

One very important lesson that comes up for us in many different ways is to reinforce the habit of going to peace first before deciding anything. This includes interpreting any event or experience. Going to peace first is how we resign as your own interpreter and invite the true Interpreter into our awareness. When we remember to go to peace first, we allow ourselves to be carried. It is the arrogance of the ego that insists it knows what anything means or how to think about or decide what to do about anything in the world.

Whenever we find ourselves worried or concerned about anyone or anything, this is a projection of our own sense of vulnerability and uncertainty. Worrying about anything is simply the effect of falling back into ego’s false ideas of loss and lack. Worry is a sign to step back once again and allow in peace.

The ego proclaims loudly, “There is no time for peace now.” Holy Spirit says, “Now is the only time for peace.” Peace will never come if it is always thought of as a future goal. Peace can only be experienced now. But to experience peace, we must let go of or forgive the past. Dragging the past with us makes us unaware of the peace-filled present.

We recently had an opportunity to practice letting peace lead the way. While we were on a trip about an hour from home, a red light on the dashboard showed that the power assist for the brakes had failed. We were able to stop the car at the side of the road. We looked at each other and said, “It’s time to go to peace instead of pieces.”

We took the time to allow in the experience of peace, which opened the door to Holy Spirit’s guidance. What came once we moved into rightmindedness is that we were safe and that we could drive home safety. We simply needed to leave a large buffer between us and any vehicle in front of us. As we drove home, we practiced accepting Holy Spirit’s gift of peace whenever tension started to come up and arrived safe and sound.

We have learned from A Course in Miracles that what happens in the dream is not important. What is important is how we respond to what seems to be happening in the dream. An experience like the brakes failing becomes a lesson in remembering that we are eternally safe in God, no matter what appears in the dream.

This is how everything becomes a lesson that God would have us learn. Having this consistent attitude toward every experience is the only meaningful use of time. With this approach toward ‘life’ in this world, we can embrace every experience as another step toward waking up from the dream. Walking through every experience with Holy Spirit (by going to peace first) helps us uncover and release our unconscious beliefs that are barriers to our awareness of Love’s eternal presence. When we are willing to accept His peace, Holy Spirit will always lead us through fear to Love.
