Simply Do This

At a recent study group a fellow study buddy made the comment that “to go from using the ego thought process to the Holy Spirit’s thought process was much like ending an abusive relationship. It makes you wonder why you stayed so long and put up with the abuse.” I’ve been thinking about this ever since.

The most abusive relationship I ever had is the one I have with myself. It doesn’t matter what happens or has happened. It’s never about the people or circumstances outside of me. It’s all about how I perceive and process the things I experience.

We all have things in our lives we wish we didn’t say or do. In this, I’m no different than anyone else. It’s the story I tell myself about what has happened that determines the way I think, feel and behave. I’m free to choose to see my circumstances as lessons God would have me learn, but I’m also free to deny, repress or otherwise refuse to learn. It is simply a choice.

If I choose not to learn, I have just chosen to abuse myself. I will push myself into doing things I don’t want to do. I’ll react to people instead of responding. The list of broken choices I could make is endless. I’ll be angry, confused and feel great frustration. These are all things the ego does. The Holy Spirit quietly waits for me to remember there is another way.

Lesson 189 says, “Simply do this: Be still, and lay aside all thoughts of what you are and what God is; all concepts you have learned about the world; all images you hold about yourself. Empty your mind of everything it thinks is either true or false, or good or bad, of every thought it judges worthy, and all the ideas of which it is ashamed. Hold on to nothing. Do not bring with you one thought the past has taught you, nor one belief you ever learned before from anything. Forget this world, forget this course and come with wholly empty hands unto your God.”

This is the only way I can hear God’s Voice, because it is His way. Being still and choosing allows the Holy Spirit work in me stops the abusive relationship I have with myself as an ego. This lesson also asks me a very good question. “Is it not He Who knows his way to you?” I don’t need to do anything, know anything or be anything. I very simply need to be still and allow Him to have access to me. That’s all. Be still. “And in our quiet hearts and open mind, His Love will blaze its pathway of itself.” (Lesson 189) Realizing this ends the abusive relationship I have with myself.
