“There is no peace except the peace of God.”

Fully accepting “There is no peace except the peace of God” simplifies life immensely. To find comfort, I do not need to try to organize outer circumstances to meet conditions I think will bring me peace. Peace cannot be found in outer conditions. I do not need to find a certain relationship to be happy and at peace. Peace cannot be found in a relationship with an image I perceive as outside of me. All the efforts to make external conditions that will make me happy and comfort me and bring me peace can never succeed. There is no peace to be found there.

As long as I believe there is an “other,” there is the potential for conflict. The peace of God is one because One is all there is. We are all part of that One. I simply need to let go of searching for peace where it cannot be found and peace will dawn upon my mind automatically, for it is already there. This means anything that seems to disturb my peace of mind is only disturbing because of the meaning I have given it. The disturbance is only in my mind.

This is good news, because if the disturbance is only in my mind, it is totally in my hands to let it go. I have the power in every moment to choose the peace of God. I need only forgive myself for imagining there was something else and let it go. What’s more, I have a powerful Friend in my mind, the Holy Spirit, Who shares His strength and vision with me to help me forgive and let go. I am never alone, ever. And I am glad and thankful this is so.

In this lesson Jesus makes it clear what to ask for. In paragraph 3 he tells us, “Yet you can ask as easily for love, for happiness, and for eternal life in peace that has no ending. Ask for this, and you can only win. To ask for what you have already must succeed. To ask that what is false be true can only fail. Forgive yourself for vain imaginings.”

As I learn to ask for the peace of God instead of trying to make this world real, I am asking for union rather than separation. As I learn to ask for the peace of God, I do not try to change the world. I simply realize it is not really there. I realize what I am seeing comes from my desire to see separation.

As I change what I desire to see with the help of the Holy Spirit, I will see unity where I once saw separation. I will see there is really only one mind where I once saw separate bodies. I will be led to experience the peace of God.
