I merely follow, for I would not lead.
Father, You are the One Who gave the plan for my salvation to me. You have set the way I am to go, the role to take, and every step in my appointed path. I cannot lose the way. I can but choose to wander off a while, and then return. Your loving Voice will always call me back, and guide my feet aright. My brothers all can follow in the way I lead them. Yet I merely follow in the way to You, as You direct me and would have me go.
So let us follow One Who knows the way. We need not tarry, and we cannot stray except an instant from His loving Hand. We walk together, for we follow Him. The Holy Spirit leads us on the path to happiness and peace. The ego leads us to chaos, conflict, fear and guilt. It seems that the choice for which leader to follow is obvious. Why would we choose to follow the lead of the ego and suffer its consequences? The ego came out of the wish for specialness, to have something no one else has. The Holy Spirit cannot lead us to this because He leads to God, Who gives all of His Love to everyone equally. There is nothing else to give.
With the ego as our leader, we have taught ourselves that we can have our own special status. But this “status” is built on believing empty, illusionary forms are real. It seems that we can be special, somehow different from anyone else. But this brings guilt with it. The ego’s domain is a world of give and take. We take from others in order to have more for ourselves, either by a bargain in which we give something of lesser value or an outright attack in which we forcibly take what we want. These transactions inevitably bring guilt with them.
When we choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide, we are led on a path that frees us from guilt and restores us to the Love that is our Home. In this Love we find peace and happiness without limit. Today we choose to follow the Holy Spirit’s lead. We would not try to lead ourselves alone.
