The Means to Remember Our True Self

I choose to see my brother’s sinlessness.

Forgiveness is a choice. ²I never see my brother as he is, for that is far beyond perception. ³What I see in him is merely what I wish to see, because it stands for what I want to be the truth. ⁴It is to this alone that I respond, however much I seem to be impelled by outside happenings. ⁵I choose to see what I would look upon, and this I see, and only this. ⁶My brother’s sinlessness shows me that I would look upon my own. ⁷And I will see it, having chosen to behold my brother in its holy light.

What could restore Your memory to me, except to see my brother’s sinlessness? ²His holiness reminds me that he was created one with me, and like myself. ³In him I find my Self, and in Your Son I find the memory of You as well. (W-335)

It is essential to the ego that we see an external world populated by people and images, separate and distinct from ourselves. This perception maintains our belief that we are separate and alone. It doesn’t seem that we want to see war, conflict, disease and death. But we do want confirmation that we are unique, special and different. It is this underlying wish that determines how we perceive our brothers and the world.

But hidden beneath this wish for specialness is the Self that remains eternally at one with our Creator. This Self knows only Love and sees only Love, for It sees only Itself everywhere and in everything. This is the vision of Christ which sees with forgiving eyes. It does not try to limit what It is by giving It a form, a separate body.

As we let the Holy Spirit help us see with Christ’s vision, we forgive the world for the projections we have laid upon it. We learn that we do not want separation or specialness. We want to remember the Love in which we live eternally. Forgiveness is the means to remember.
