Finding Our Place of Safety and Peace

I will step back and let Him lead the way.

There is a way of living in the world that is not here, although it seems to be. ²You do not change appearance, though you smile more frequently. ³Your forehead is serene; your eyes are quiet. ⁴And the ones who walk the world as you do recognize their own. ⁵Yet those who have not yet perceived the way will recognize you also, and believe that you are like them, as you were before.

The world is an illusion. ²Those who choose to come to it are seeking for a place where they can be illusions, and avoid their own reality. ³Yet when they find their own reality is even here, then they step back and let it lead the way. ⁴What other choice is really theirs to make? ⁵To let illusions walk ahead of truth is madness. ⁶But to let illusion sink behind the truth and let the truth stand forth as what it is, is merely sanity.

This is the simple choice we make today. ²The mad illusion will remain awhile in evidence, for those to look upon who chose to come, and have not yet rejoiced to find they were mistaken in their choice. ³They cannot learn directly from the truth, because they have denied that it is so. ⁴And so they need a Teacher [Holy Spirit] Who perceives their madness, but Who still can look beyond illusion to the simple truth in them.”

…there is another road that leads away from loss of every kind, for sacrifice and deprivation both are quickly left behind. ²This is the way appointed for you now. (A Course in Miracles, W-155.1:1–3:4;5:1-2. See also ACIM Lesson 155 Insights.)

The wish to be special, to have a unique identity, is a wish to avoid our true Reality as God’s Son. As His Son, we share all of His attributes. Individuality is impossible in the oneness of His Love.

The Course is teaching us the price we pay for choosing individuality over the unity of Love. Specialness introduces differences and conflict into our awareness. This conflict is the basis for all our fears and guilt because it makes harm, loss and lack seem real. Nowhere in the illusionary dream can we find lasting peace because there is no refuge that protects us from conflict.

But we have a Teacher to guide us out of our insane wish for specialness. He recognizes our insanity but does not believe it. He helps us let go of our insane beliefs by showing us that they offer nothing we really want.

All we really want is the safety, peace and comfort of the Love God has given us. It is already in us. We only need to accept It as our own. As we accept the Love we are, we become messengers of Love in the world. We learn to teach only Love and remember we are Love and nothing else.

The Certainty of Our Return to Love

³Love is one. ⁴It has no separate parts and no degrees; no kinds nor levels, no divergencies and no distinctions. ⁵It is like itself, unchanged throughout. ⁶It never alters with a person or a circumstance. ⁷It is the Heart of God, and also of His Son.

Love’s meaning is obscure to anyone who thinks that love can change. ²He does not see that changing love must be impossible. ³And thus he thinks that he can love at times, and hate at other times. ⁴He also thinks that love can be bestowed on one, and yet remain itself although it is withheld from others. ⁵To believe these things of love is not to understand it. ⁶If it could make such distinctions, it would have to judge between the righteous and the sinner, and perceive the Son of God in separate parts.

Love cannot judge. ²As it is one itself, it looks on all as one. ³Its meaning lies in oneness. ⁴And it must elude the mind that thinks of it as partial or in part. ⁵There is no love but God’s, and all of love is His. ⁶There is no other principle that rules where love is not. ⁷Love is a law without an opposite. ⁸Its wholeness is the power holding everything as one, the link between the Father and the Son which holds Them both forever as the same.

Call to your Father, certain that His Voice will answer. ²He Himself has promised this. ³And He Himself will place a spark of truth within your mind wherever you give up a false belief, a dark illusion of your own reality and what love means. ⁴He will shine through your idle thoughts today, and help you understand the truth of love. ⁵In loving gentleness He will abide with you, as you allow His Voice to teach love’s meaning to your clean and open mind. ⁶And He will bless the lesson with His Love. The world we see is constantly changing, from the cells in our bodies to the weather and world politics. All this confirms that what we are perceiving cannot be real, for only the changelessness of Love is real.

This fact is the foundation for our release from the world of fear and guilt and return to the certainty of our Home in God’s Love. We can count on His Love because It never changes. In response to His Son’s dream of separation, God gave us the Holy Spirit to lead us Home. We can call upon His help in every moment of every day.

Today we remind ourselves often to ask the Holy Spirit how He would see what we are perceiving in the dream. As we accept His vision, our misperceptions are healed. Where we saw cause for judgment and defense, we will welcome our brother to join with us in the unity of Love. Where there was conflict, there is peace. Where there was depression, there is joy. Where there was fear, we remember Love.

Seeing Past Projections to Love’s Oneness

Without forgiveness I will still be blind.

Sin is the symbol of attack. ²Behold it anywhere, and I will suffer. ³For forgiveness is the only means whereby Christ’s vision comes to me. ⁴Let me accept what His sight shows me as the simple truth, and I am healed completely. ⁵Brother, come and let me look on you. ⁶Your loveliness reflects my own. ⁷Your sinlessness is mine. ⁸You stand forgiven, and I stand with you.

So would I look on everyone today. ²My brothers are Your Sons. ³Your Fatherhood created them, and gave them all to me as part of You, and my own Self as well. ⁴Today I honor You through them, and thus I hope this day to recognize my Self. Forgiveness is the central theme throughout A Course in Miracles. This lesson makes it clear that our return to awareness of our Self as Love comes only through forgiveness. This world is the effect of the ego’s demand for specialness, which rejects the oneness of Love. As long as we value any aspect of the ego’s thought system of separation, we cannot experience the full scope of God’s gift of Love. And we cannot ask the ego’s help to forgive, for it will not contribute to its own demise.

Fortunately we have Help from outside the ego’s thought system to let go of our mistaken allegiance to the ego. The Holy Spirit is our only means to achieve true forgiveness. But we must do our part. We must be willing to turn over our perceptions to the Holy Spirit for His correction. We need be willing to accept His help to heal our fear based thoughts. Together with the Holy Spirit as our Guide, we awaken to the recognition that we are one with the Love that unites us with all our brothers and our Creator.

We dedicate today to being mindful of our perceptions and offering them willingly to the Holy Spirit to receive His gift of Christ’s vision. Through this vision we see past the ego’s projections to the innocence of our brothers and our Self.

Remembering the Limitless Love We Are

⁶Ideas leave not their source. ⁷The emphasis this course has placed on that idea is due to its centrality in our attempts to change your mind about yourself. ⁸It is the reason you can heal. ⁹It is the cause of healing. ¹⁰It is why you cannot die. ¹¹Its truth established you as one with God.

Let us today be children of the truth, and not deny our holy heritage. ²Our life is not as we imagine it. ³Who changes life because he shuts his eyes, or makes himself what he is not because he sleeps, and sees in dreams an opposite to what he is? ⁴We will not ask for death in any form today. ⁵Nor will we let imagined opposites to life abide even an instant where the Thought of life eternal has been set by God Himself.

His holy home we strive to keep today as He established it, and wills it be forever and forever. ²He is Lord of what we think today. ³And in His Thoughts, which have no opposite, we understand there is one life, and that we share with Him,… (A Course in Miracles, W-167.3:6-11;10:1–11:3. When we identify with the ego and the body image it made, it does not seem that we are a Thought in the Mind of God. The body image is a barrier that seems to house a separate mind, impervious to the Will of God. This is the way the ego protects itself from God’s Love. The ego fears Love because Its Presence would make the wish for specialness recognizable as insane. Who but the insane would wish for conflict, danger, lovelessness and loss when they have been given limitless Love, peace that cannot be disturbed and indescribable joy?

We have been given the Holy Spirit to lead us out of our insanity. Lovingly and gently He guides us to recognize the foolishness of wishing for specialness in the presence of limitless Love. With His help we learn that what we really want is to be what we were created to be — Love and nothing else. As we accept this, we are accepting our true Life, the Life we live in God’s Love.

Releasing the Grievances That Imprison Us

²Because your grievances are hiding the light of the world in you, everyone stands in darkness, and you beside him. ³But as the veil of your grievances is lifted, you are released with him. ⁴Share your salvation now with him who stood beside you when you were in hell. ⁵He is your brother in the light of the world that saves you both.

²Salvation is our only need. ³There is no other purpose here, and no other function to fulfill. ⁴Learning salvation is our only goal. ⁵Let us end the ancient search today by finding the light in us, and holding it up for everyone who searches with us to look upon and rejoice.

²Your little effort and small determination [to find the light] call on the power of the universe to help you, and God Himself will raise you from darkness into light. ³You are in accord with His Will. ⁴You cannot fail because your will is His.

…what you undertake with God must succeed. ⁶Then let the power of God work in you and through you, that His Will and yours be done.

⁴My grievances hide the light of the world in me. ⁵I cannot see what I have hidden. ⁶Yet I want to let it be revealed to me, for my salvation and the salvation of the world. (A Course in Miracles, W-69.1:2-5;3:2-5;7:2-4;8:5-6;9:4-6. See also ACIM Lesson 69 Insights.)

Judgment imprisons those who judge. To maintain justification for their judgments, they must believe they are a body with a separate mind. This is the jail that seems to keep the Son of God in a loveless world of darkness. There Love is absent and fear and guilt are Love’s replacement.

Yet beyond the darkness lies the eternal Light of God, forever united with His Son, our true Self. This Light is hidden only by our mistaken beliefs. We free ourselves from the hell of isolation by letting God help us find His Light within. His strength supports our efforts. We cannot fail, for He is with us.

Today we choose to let the Light and strength of God help us let go of our grievances. With His help, we are restored to the certainty that we share God’s Will for perfect peace and happiness for His Son. The jailhouse door is open and we walk free with the Love of God beside us and in us, along with all our brothers.

Fulfilling Our Function of Salvation

⁷Salvation is my only function here.
⁸God still is Love, and this is not His Will.

³Your Father loves you. ⁴All the world of pain is not His Will. ⁵Forgive yourself the thought He wanted this for you. ⁶Then let the Thought with which He has replaced all your mistakes enter the darkened places of your mind that thought the thoughts that never were His Will.

³Let in the light, and you will look upon no obstacle to what He wills for you. ⁴Open your secrets to His kindly light, and see how bright this light still shines in you.

Practice His Thought today, and let His Light seek out and lighten up all darkened spots, and shine through them to join them to the rest. ²It is God’s Will your mind be one with His. ³It is God’s Will that He has but one Son. ⁴It is God’s Will that His one Son is you. The ego teaches that it is God’s Will that we suffer, that God is judgmental and will condemn us to death because we have sinned against Him. All this is a decoy to hide the fact that what the ego projects on God is what it wants for us. The ego wants us dead, the ultimate “proof” that it has prevailed against God. This is the ego’s ideal dream. But we can awaken from this dream of pain, guilt, fear and death because it is not God’s Will for us.

God’s Will is Love and nothing else. The truth in us is God’s Son to Whom He gives all of His Love, without limit nor end. The acceptance of this fact is our salvation. It frees us from the ego’s dark thoughts which deny the Light of Love that is forever ours.

Today we take time to open our mind to God’s Light. We let It fill our mind and shine away the shadows of fear and guilt. We let It comfort us in Its sure protection. We let Love’s peace flow through us and feel Its blessing as we share It with the world. Thus do we fulfill our function of salvation.

Replacing the Ego’s Projections with True Perception

Let me remember what my purpose is.

If I forget my goal I can be but confused, unsure of what I am, and thus conflicted in my actions. ²No one can serve contradicting goals and serve them well. ³Nor can he function without deep distress and great depression. ⁴Let us therefore be determined to remember what we want today, that we may unify our thoughts and actions meaningfully, and achieve only what God would have us do this day.

Father, forgiveness is Your chosen means for our salvation. ²Let us not forget today that we can have no will but Yours. ³And thus our purpose must be Yours as well, if we would reach the peace You will for us. (A Course in Miracles, W-257. See also ACIM Lesson 257 Insights.)

If our will is the same as God’s Will, our purpose must be to extend His gift of peace, joy and Love. As we accept our true Will, the certainty of our changeless, true Self dispels the conflict and certainty in the world.

Our practice today is to give our true Will priority. We ask the Holy Spirit to help us see the Presence of Love beyond appearances in the world. We ask His help to let go of the mistaken beliefs which cloud our vision. We accept His help by bringing all our perceptions to Him with willingness to accept His true perception in their place.

As we do this, we learn to disregard the ego’s projections and join with our brothers in the joyous giving and receiving of God’s gifts. This is our path to peace and happiness in the certainty of God’s Love.
