I can elect to change all thoughts that hurt.
Loss is not loss when properly perceived. ²Pain is impossible. ³There is no grief with any cause at all. ⁴And suffering of any kind is nothing but a dream. ⁵This is the truth, at first to be but said and then repeated many times; and next to be accepted as but partly true, with many reservations. ⁶Then to be considered seriously more and more, and finally accepted as the truth. ⁷I can elect to change all thoughts that hurt. ⁸And I would go beyond these words today, and past all reservations, and arrive at full acceptance of the truth in them.
Father, what You have given cannot hurt, so grief and pain must be impossible. ²Let me not fail to trust in You today, accepting but the joyous as Your gifts; accepting but the joyous as the truth. (A Course in Miracles, W-284. See also ACIM Lesson 284 Insights.)
The ego uses guilt as a motivator. Because of guilt, we try to fix our misperceptions by doing something that will correct the thing we believe we did wrong. Yet all this is based on illusion. Our true Self is Love and nothing else. Love can only extend Love. It finds great joy in extending Itself to embrace all with Love. This is the Identity we must accept to remember the joy that is God’s gift.
This acceptance seems difficult because we have so much invested in the ego thought system. We try to acknowledge that we are Love but we seem to fall short. The ego tells us we have failed. It is important to be gentle with ourselves. Love does not condemn.
The process of accepting the truth that we are Love in the dream takes time. This lesson acknowledges the process. Remembering this helps us dismiss the guilt the ego offers. Our function is to remember by forgiving our identification with the ego. With our forgiveness, our identity as Love shines brightly.
