Windows and Mirrors

by Rev. Vicki Evans, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

Today I woke up with a vision of a globe and realized, with the help of Holy Spirit, that I am viewing my perceived worries and problems like a planetary globe — vast, spacious, and all encompassing. Then on the globe I saw a huge crater of hurt and anxiety. I realized that I am viewing my issues as large by creating a crater instead of a small pinhole.

I took a step back and reminded myself that, if something is causing me fear, anxiety, or worry, or I am dreading a difficult situation, I can picture the problem on a globe. Then ask myself how often does that situation really effect my life? Or is it just a pin dot problem that I have expanded by letting in worry instead of Light and Love? Is the issue a lifetime problem, here for a season, or only for a moment?

The crater can take up so much room in my thoughts that worry takes over, when some problems are only worthy of a dot of brain space. If the problem is large, I ask myself: How can I shrink this problem to make it a smaller part of my headspace and leave room for more Light?

First of all, if I am dreading an encounter or situation with another person, I can shrink that worry by asking myself how I can plan ahead.

What are some ways I can be respectful to myself and others to keep the peace? I can prepare myself by planning my reaction: Take a deep breath and visualize a pin dot on a globe and a vast ocean of peace; then think of a 3-5 word catch phrase or mantra such as, we are Light, we are Love, we connect, or sometimes silence is enough with a kind expression.

Another way I have found helpful in preserving my peace is by imagining living in a yellow submarine when stress, chaos, and anxiety engulf me. I surround myself with the protected walls of a visual submarine and look out the window at the life movie unfolding outside the window. It protects me as I just watch and observe what is happening outside this window, without reacting while enjoying some virtual popcorn.

I am not an actor on the stage of the world, but I am just a peaceful observer watching events pass by me like thoughts floating through my brain. My peace is preserved, and I avoid impulse statements and reactions which may result in apologies and damage repair later. I also get a chance to take a moment to do some deep breathing and positive visualization to decide if I really need to respond, react, or just sit in the joy of silence and peace.

Another technique is acknowledging that I have a choice to choose fear or faith — all I can control is my reaction to situations and when I choose faith, I let go of my ego of control and self-importance, and reach for Holy Spirit to walk beside me and encourage me to trust myself to choose the light. Trust in myself and in Holy Spirit gives me the opportunity for responses that align with my values to reflect love, light and my true Self.

Once I am in a state of peace, I can emerge from my yellow submarine and trade the windows of life’s movies for a reflective mirror. Windows help me pause, take a step back and just watch and observe until I am in a state of peace. Then I am ready for a mirror that lets me shine for Holy Spirit. I can now make the world my mirror and instead of looking back at myself from an inward reflection that only reflects a narrow viewpoint of mood, I can look outward and choose the world as my mirror of connection so that my Light can reflect off others, rebound back to me, and extend outward to the world!

Taking the Time to Receive God’s Peace and Happiness

by Revs. Robert and Mary Stoelting, Founders of Pathways of Light

Our soul is nourished as we become more and more willing to journey inward to the Holy Spirit within our mind. As we do this, the ego mind is quieted. The Holy Spirit can then guide us to our inner Light of God’s peace and happiness.

Fear falls away as we are gently brought to the truth of our innate innocence and the fact that we, along with all our brothers, are still as God created us. We feel safe as we let the Holy Spirit nourish our soul by reminding us that God has given everyone in this world all of His eternal Love.

In our experience, we have found that our souls are nourished as we read through the titles of the first 50 lessons of the Workbook. (See Workbook pages iii to iv.) Reading each lesson title reminds us, again and again, that we know nothing on our own. When we get lost in the stories of being separate from God, we need the nourishment that the Holy Spirit brings us.

We also like to frequently review the titles of lessons 61 to 80. (See Workbook pages iv to v.) These titles remind us of our true life purpose and go into more detail about how our Inner Teacher helps us move forward in the process of letting go of grievances and returning to the Light of Truth.

In Chapter 14, Section VIII, Jesus tells us:

“Let your mind wander not through darkened corridors, away from light’s center. You and your brother may choose to lead yourselves astray, but you can be brought together only by the Guide appointed for you. He will surely lead you to where God and His Son await your recognition. They are joined in giving you the gift of oneness, before which all separation vanishes.” (T-14.VIII.3:1-4)

We have found that we need help to pull us out of the quagmire of illusions that we have convinced ourselves is true. Our Father has provided that Help in our minds, where our illusions can be corrected.

We accept this gentle help of the Holy Spirit to see the truth in everyone by letting Him be the Interpreter of all our perceptions. We have found that if anything disturbs our peace of mind, it is a sure sign that we are misjudging what we perceive. Our practice is to continue to let the Holy Spirit show us the truth of Love’s oneness behind all our perceptions.

Another Workbook lesson that helps us is Lesson 106 on pages 190-191: Let me be still and listen to the truth. “Listen, and hear your Father speak to you through His appointed Voice, which silences the thunder of the meaningless, and shows the way to peace to those who cannot see. Be still today and listen to the truth.” (W-106.2:1-2)

As we become more and more willing to still our minds of all the ego’s fearful thoughts, and let the Holy Spirit nourish our soul, we are brought to a mental state of inner peace. We receive the perfect message from the Holy Spirit to free ourselves of the fearful and judgmental thoughts of the ego.

We are raised up to see the Love beyond the fearful stories of the world. We feel more loving, more kind. We become more aware of how to become more truly helpful in this world. We let Holy Spirit lead the way.

“In this world you can become a spotless mirror, in which the Holiness of your Creator shines forth from you to all around you. You can reflect Heaven here. Yet no reflections of the images of other gods must dim the mirror that would hold God’s reflection in it. Earth can reflect Heaven or hell; God or the ego. You need but leave the mirror clean and clear of all the images of hidden darkness you have drawn upon it. God will shine upon it of Himself. Only the clear reflection of Himself can be perceived upon it.”

“Could you but realize for a single instant the power of healing that the reflection of God, shining in you, can bring to all the world, you could not wait to make the mirror of your mind clean to receive the image of the holiness that heals the world.” (T-14.IX.5;7:1)

Everything we perceive in the world is a reflection of what we believe is our reality. If we identify with the ego thought system of separation, we see a world of conflicting images that seem to compete to establish their value.

While we believe we are in the world, there is an alternative way of looking at it that reflects the Love of our Creator. If we are willing to let the Holy Spirit be our Interpreter of our perceptions, we will see this world through forgiving eyes.

We will see Love’s reflection in place of the divisive images that seem to attack. We will be inspired to extend Love from within to join with the Love we recognize in everyone, everywhere. As we let this be the only way we see the world, we are ready to accept Heaven as our Home. As we let our soul be nourished by the Holy Spirit, we extend that nourishment to all our brothers.

The wish for specialness led to the dream of separation, which denies the Source of the only nourishment we need — the Love of God. When we deny His Love, we deny the real Life we live in God. This denial is the cause of our constant search for the Love we believe we are lacking.

Love is the only nourishment we need and we need It only because we have denied God’s gift of all His Love. As we learn to accept the Holy Spirit’s help to see the truth of the Love that is every brother, we make way for the only nourishment we need to be fulfilled.

The end of the dreams of fear and guilt comes when we let go of the wish for specialness; when we let go of claiming an identity we can call our own. Free of this limiting wish, we now see everyone as part of our one Self. We are grateful for all who are willing to join with us in our Father’s Love and let His Light lighten our mind with the vision of Christ.

If we seem to experience anything but peace and happiness, we know we must be believing in a false identity that can never be real. We use this perception as a reminder to take the time to let our soul be nourished by pausing to return to peace and ask the Holy Spirit to help us forgive our mistaken belief. As we accept His help, we remember that all our needs are met by our Father’s changeless Love.

Thank You Beloved Guide Holy Spirit

by Mary Michele, Pathways of Light Member and Student of ACIM

The present is indeed a gift. God is the Life within which we live in the eternal now. Your guidance leads only to peace — the stillness that encompasses us all.  Nowhere in the world can this be found.  We remember it easily as it is never not our true experience.

By way of spirit’s fullness, we do nothing but our one function — extend His Being.  Thus is the Kingdom increased and all love and joy shared equally by all the Sons of God infinitely. God’s gifts are received and given by all brothers constantly. There has never been a reality different than love.  No obstacles exist.

You teach that God has not changed His Mind about His Son. Nor has anything ever changed in the Son. He has always remained, since his creation, perfect as his Father — at one with all aspects of creation and limitless in power and peace. Today we know this truth deep within our holy minds, united in God’s One Mind of Love.

Thank You Holy Spirit for all your lessons on love.

Standing on Holy Ground

by Rev. Myron Jones, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

I love the section in Chapter 14 of the Course that discusses the Circle of Atonement. Each time I go back to it, I have a deeper understanding, and so my experience of it is more profound. This year, my focus has been on healing grievances. Here is a sentence in this section that has been especially helpful to my practice.

“Your only calling here is to devote yourself, with active willingness, to the denial of guilt in all its forms.(T-14.V.3:5)

And there we have it. I suppose that if I could have accepted this and practiced it from the first time I read it, my experience of the world would be entirely different now. I can’t complain that Jesus was being cryptic or that I didn’t understand. Apparently, I just didn’t want to do this. Now I do, and I will be vigilant for those times when I don’t. I will notice the guilt thoughts because, finally, I want to. Awakening is now more important to me than being right and maintaining this separate self. To that end, I have written this in my calendar, where I see it many times a day.

The ego mind insists that some people are wrong-minded, and it says that I can’t just pretend that it isn’t true. And I suppose that everyone who believes they are still ‘here’ is wrong-minded, so that’s a lot of people. What keeps this awareness from being part of the problem is that I am losing interest in judging anyone for their story. Love keeps me from assigning guilt. We are all doing the best we can within the parameters we have established to make this illusory world. Everyone.

The murderer, the pedophile, the politician I don’t agree with, everyone who seems to be determined to keep separation in place, no matter who is hurt by it, is precious to God. I am precious to Him, but I will lose awareness of this if I judge myself or others. I am actively willing to deny guilt in all its forms and to notice when I fail to do this so that I can accept correction quickly.

I can’t explain this shift. I can’t pinpoint to some passage from the Course, or some moment when some high-level understanding was achieved. I don’t know how or when Love filled my heart. It just did. And this level of awareness of Love’s presence is new, and to be honest, I worry it is fragile, and I might lose it. I don’t think that’s right, though. God is Love, so it cannot be fragile. Perhaps I mean that my hold on it is yet fragile, and so I want to protect it until I grow strong in this new awareness. That is why I am committed to devoting myself to the denial of guilt in all its forms. I cannot love what I judge, and guilt in any form obscures the love that we are.

The lessons I have been looking at since the beginning of the year are leading us to understand that the world is a reflection of our thoughts. If my thought is one of judgment, the world I see will be a judgmental world. It will seem that it is full of mean-spirited people who will attack at the slightest provocation, and I will spend my life caught within that cycle of attack-defense mode. I know this is true because that is where I used to be. The love in me is now reflected onto the world, and I am overwhelmed by loving expressions of it.

I still see the cruelty of man against man, but I no longer see it in the same way. I see it as the call for love that it is. Not pitiful calls, just souls trying one thing and then another, always yearning toward God – toward love, even though they may not be consciously aware of it. I just want to help. I want to support their efforts in whatever way I can. Generally, the best way I can do this is to just love them no matter what. Not believing they are their words or actions, not judging them, not making them guilty, is loving them. The more I am able to do this, the lovelier the world I see.

The words from this section of A Course in Miracles are so beautiful and so profound that they awaken a yearning in me to live this. Not later, when I am no longer dreaming this story of Myron, but now, right here in the messy midst of it all. Holy Spirit, protect this tender love, strengthen my determination, and keep me on the path to awakening. Decide for God for me.

Today, I choose vigilance for love, knowing that every release of guilt allows the Circle of Atonement to widen.

Another paragraph in The Circle of Atonement that has been helpful is this one.

“Blessed are you who teach with me. Our power comes not of us, but of our Father. In guiltlessness we know Him, as He knows us guiltless. I stand within the circle, calling you to peace. Teach peace with me, and stand with me on holy ground. Remember for everyone your Father’s power that He has given him. Believe not that you cannot teach His perfect peace. Stand not outside, but join with me within. Fail not the only purpose to which my teaching calls you. Restore to God His Son as He created him, by teaching him his innocence.” (T-14.V.9:1–10)

Sentences 4-5 inspire me to right thinking: “I stand within the circle, calling you to peace. Teach peace with me, and stand with me on holy ground.”

Every day I write. I write about the lesson, and on many days, I also write about a paragraph or two in the Text. I do this because it helps me stay on the path and gives me more understanding and inspiration than I would get otherwise. But I also do it as a way of joining with Jesus in teaching peace. I care that others who are drawn to it are receiving from it whatever they need. I care because we are One, and what is for you is also for me. I give, and I receive what I give. I am healed, and you are healed with me. I stand in the Circle of Atonement as steadfastly as I am able, and I invite you to join me there alongside Jesus.

After so many years of studying and practicing the Course, it is almost funny to see it all distilled down to the simple understanding that we are One within the Mind of God and everything else is an illusion. We are here to heal the sleeping mind of its delusions. Each, in our own way, is learning and teaching innocence. As we learn, we teach, and as we teach, we learn, but what we learn remains the same. It is just another form of guilt denied. I know that I am looking at and believing another form of guilt if what I experience is not love. Truly, this is so simple.

Shortly before I began this particular writing, I got a text from my son. He has a particularly bad case of flu but cannot just sit things out while he heals. He had to drive quite a way to get his medicine. He can’t talk because of his sickness, and his head feels like it is going to explode. It hurts so much. On top of all that, he can’t work and his bills are all way behind, and he doesn’t have money for food. Then he had a blowout, and his new jack wasn’t working. Lord, have mercy!

I felt so bad for him, and I could feel the tension mounting in my body. I had just stepped out of the Circle, and I wanted back in. I knew that was what I wanted, but I was having trouble backing out of my son’s story. The part of my mind that was caught up in that began to catalogue all his struggles over the past few years. Then it wanted to think about how so much of it was due to poor choices. In other words, I was not only stuck in my story about his story, but I was also leaning into guilt.

I have to say that understanding this did not immediately change how I felt. But I remembered that my difficulty seeing this differently was caused by trying to use the same mind that got me into it to get me out. I then asked the Holy Spirit to decide for God for me. And slowly, over the next little while, my stress was relieved. I had to look at a few more ego thoughts that promoted some form of guilt, but I did so, and then it was over. I had stepped back into the Circle of Atonement, where I could actually be helpful.

I have no solution for my son’s present problems, but I did ask Jesus to help him, and I began to think of him as he is in reality. He is a soul just like me, trying to wake up, just like me. In refusing to join in his story of fear, I am helping. Believing in the strength of God in him, I am helping him believe in himself as well, even though, on a conscious level, he has no idea this is what’s happening. Our minds are joined, and so he receives what I receive. It may or may not affect an immediate change for him, but it is available to him. And as more of us stand with Jesus, that message grows stronger and is more easily received by those who need it.

So, right now, I stand peacefully beside Jesus on holy ground. Honestly, this might change in the next moment, but what won’t change is that I know the way back now. And I will always take that path, even if it takes me a while to decide on it. I invite you to join me there. Let us stand together in the Circle of Atonement, where guilt is undone, and peace is remembered. From here, we will, as one, all go Home together.
