The Desire for Lucid Living

by Rev. Larry Glenz, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

I read one of Jon Mundy’s Sunday articles recently. Jon has been one of my favorite Course teachers for decades. He spoke of a way of navigating this apparent world and called it lucid living.

“Lucid living: i.e. The alive, attentive, self-aware self, conscious of the dreamlike quality of our world without being caught in the dream, the game, the play, the news, and the soap-opera of our politics and our everyday world.”

What a great way to live!

That sounds like an attractive goal for us while we see ourselves as bodies. We are clearly being taught that we are not bodies, but we seem to make enormous efforts to care for the health and comfort of our bodies. From the time we wake, we become obsessed with this. And we become focused on our specialness in comparison to others.

“How bitterly does everyone tied to this world defend the specialness he wants to be the truth!”
(T-24.VII.1:1)

“Nothing his specialness demands does he withhold.” (T-24.VII.1:3)

And while it (specialness) calls to him he hears no other Voice.”(T-24.VII.1:5)

I see in my own life how I seek specialness. I am competitive. I make comparisons. I am protective of how I see my perceived accomplishments. And I am embarrassed by what could be seen as my failings. I make judgments on people that range from the world’s most powerful leaders to the most benign people who are just trying to get by.

Can I truly expect that my dedication to the daily study of ACIM will heal me from this desire to be special?

The Course tells me:

“This course makes no attempt to teach what cannot easily be learned. It’s scope does not exceed your own, except to say that what is yours will come to you when you are ready.”
(T-24.VII.8:1-2)

Sometimes I wonder if I will ever be ready. But I can say with conviction that I have developed a trust that I am being Guided. It sometimes seems to take time for me to step back from a situation and ask for Guidance. But I do have faith in my Guide, Holy Spirit.

I am being taught that seeing the innocence in all my brothers is my pathway to inner peace. I realize I need help in seeing this Oneness instead of these different bodies and personalities.

The world should be seen as the classroom where I learn to do this. And all this will come to me when I am ready. That is the Holy Spirit’s promise.

So I try to see my brothers as innocent Sons of God. I ask the Holy Spirit’s Help in my efforts. I am grateful to be on this holy, spiritual path.

And I trust He is doing His Work.

The Control Issue

by Rev. Joyce Peebles, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

The Holy Spirit has shown me some aspects of my ego personality that have not served me well. My ego wants to be in control. This comes from fear and anxiety, which are hallmarks of the separation experience.

I not only want to control my world, but I have been arrogant enough to think I could control someone else’s. For example, under the guise of helping my 94-year-old mother, I tried to help or fix her. This gratifies my ego because I tell myself I am a good daughter, helping her mother. The fact is she does not want my help most of the time. And I don’t know what is in her best interest. It’s not my job to fix her or help her when she doesn’t want help.

Dr. Jerry Jampolsky, MD, relates his experience to his own mother. She was quite feisty and no one referred to her as a sweet, little, old lady. The same can be said of my mother. The Holy Spirit advised him “to tear up his scripts for Tilly” and to stop trying to change or help her. This does not mean you stop loving thoughts towards them. It means doing nothing to try to control.

This has been a hard lesson for me to learn. I am my mother’s sole caregiver. She does irrational things, including making poor financial decisions. Let go? Something bad will happen!

Holy Spirit has spoken more than once about this control issue. As an ego body I am a “doer.” I get things done. That’s for me.  I am asked to merely look at my fearful thoughts and do nothing.

The idea of being still and quiet seems inadequate. Forgiveness merely looks, waits and does nothing. There is no need to twist what I see in the world to get rid of my unease and try to feel better.

I am being told to be still, to stop all judging and doing. This is hard for the Joyce character in the story. I want to control and yet feel guided to surrender and do nothing.

I have told others I don’t understand. The Holy Spirit has assured me my understanding is not necessary for salvation. In fact, the only reason I want to understand is because I want to control. Instead, I need to learn to be still and quiet, do nothing in the midst of turmoil. Stop struggling and wanting things differently.

Furthermore, I am guided to let all things be exactly as they are all the time. If I want to know my True Self, I need to just BE. I can observe my thoughts without engaging or reacting at all. Beingness happens outside the dream. All I am asked to do is come with wholly empty hands to God, ready to listen.

I am learning to merely look at my pride, ignorance, controlling thoughts and do nothing. By doing nothing and just allowing them to surface they will go away on their own. Fear made this world and I want to control out of fear. Fear has tried to stop me from quietly doing nothing.

It does not matter what images I see. I can do nothing. The Holy Spirit reminds me everything is only happening in the Mind.

What do I do about the thoughts? Nothing. Let them pass. Being present in the moment is what is asked of me. I am safe in the present moment and there is nothing to fear. Stop all activity and just BE.

From the Garbage Heap to Awakening

by Rev. Sabrina Rollins, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

Once upon a time, in a faraway place, there was a vast pit in the center of a village. The pit was so deep its bottom could scarcely be seen from above. The villagers tossed all their trash into it, and because the pit was so enormous, they never feared it would overfill. The mayor appointed a caretaker, and each day the old, haggard woman tamped down the garbage and covered it with dirt so the foul odors would not rise and trouble the villagers.

As the years passed, the villagers discovered that the pit was also a convenient place to hide their misdeeds and unkind thoughts. Once thrown into the darkness, they no longer had to face their behavior or their loveless impulses. The poor caretaker worked tirelessly, day and night, to contain the stench of the ever-growing heap. But because she never complained, the villagers failed to notice that the pit was swelling — growing higher and wider with every passing day. They simply walked around it without a second glance. The mountain of garbage became part of the scenery, accepted as normal.

Until one day, something happened that had never happened before. A roaring sound erupted from the center of the pit — an ominous rumbling that shook the ground beneath the village. The earth quivered and cracked. A groaning, thunderous bellow echoed across the land. Flames burst forth, sending ash into the sky, darkening the villagers’ homes and leaving a bitter taste in their mouths.

Then the roar twisted into a sinister, piercing screech that reached the far corners of the world. The villagers tried desperately to silence the hateful sound, but nothing they did could stop it. The screech grew louder and louder until their ears throbbed and bled. Their eyes were drawn — hypnotically, unwillingly — to the mountain of garbage they themselves had created. With widening eyes, they peered into the pit.

Questions tumbled from their lips in disbelief. “Where did this pit come from?” “How did this happen?” “Why did we not see it?” But the scream from the pit drowned out their voices.

Then, two old wise sages stood at the edge of the mountain of mis-creations. “We must witness what we have hidden for eons,” they said. “Let us witness without attaching, without attacking, and without judgment.”

The villagers nodded. Silence fell. One by one, each villager looked upon their own part in the making of the mountain. They faced their fears and witnessed the innermost thoughts they had tried to bury. Many trembled, yet they remained steadfast until every last mis-deed, mis-creation, and hidden thought had been seen.

Then something wondrous occurred.

The garbage began to rise — piece by piece — lifting upward toward a brilliant light that appeared in the sky. As each piece touched the light, it dissolved, leaving only golden radiance in its place.

The villagers watched in awe as the mountain shrank — smaller and smaller and smaller — until at last it was gone.

The screaming ceased. The wailing stopped. The light poured down into each villager, filling their hearts with a new sensation. Love, warmth, and peace flowed through them and toward one another. Laughter bubbled up. Joy spread. Many began to dance.

Then a child’s voice rang out: “Look! Look at the pit!”

All heads turned. What they saw took their breath away. The pit was now filled with stunning flowers — colors so vivid they had never been seen before. A heavenly fragrance drifted through the air.

And then the caretaker appeared. No longer haggard or soiled, she stood before them luminous and beautiful. With a gentle smile, she raised her hands and the crowd fell silent.

“My name is Verity,” she said. “And I proclaim: Well done, my friends. Well done. You have witnessed your mis-creations without attaching, without attacking, without defending, and without judging yourselves or others. The Old Way is over. The Awakening has begun. Go forth in happiness. Love yourselves and one another. You are returning to your True Self.”

And — need I say it? — they all lived happily ever after.

This story was inspired and updated by the Sumerian mythology of the goddess Ereshkigal, Queen of the Underworld, yet it also echoes something deeply familiar in the world today.

Many feel that we are living through a Great Awakening, a time when what has long been hidden is rising to the surface. The “garbage” being uncovered in the news may be unsettling, but it is also a necessary part of what Helen Schucman recorded in her notes as a prerequisite to aid in the Celestial Speed-Up.

“No one can escape from illusions unless he looks at them, for not looking is the way they are protected.” (T-11.V.1)  Before anything can be released and healed, it must first be acknowledged and witnessed.

The mountain of mis-creations is not the work of a few — it is a collective symbol. Because we are One, we have all contributed to the dream of separation and fear. How can we undo what we have done?

“You must look upon your illusions and not keep them hidden, because they do not rest on their own foundation.”
(T-13.III.6:1)

And so, as these shadows come into the light, let us look upon them without judgment, without attack, and without the temptation to cast blame on those who appear to be the villains of the story.

This is a moment to turn inward with honesty and courage. To forgive ourselves for the thoughts we have hidden. To forgive others for the roles they have played in our dreams. To extend compassion to those who have personally endured the darkness now being revealed.

“It is your forgiveness that will bring the world of darkness to the light.” (W-p1.62.1:1)

Healing does not come from denial or condemnation. Healing comes from bringing the darkness to the Light, forgiving it, allowing what is false to dissolve, and remembering the truth of who we are. As the ego’s rule in this dream begins to crumble, a new awareness is emerging — one rooted in unity, love, and the recognition of our shared innocence.

“The Light has come. You are healed and you can heal.” (W-p1.75.1:1-2) Humanity’s healing is not somewhere in the future. It is happening now, through each of us, as we choose to witness our “pit of mis-creations” with love and forgiveness, rather than with fear, shame and blame. “Accept the holy instant as this year is born, and take your place, so long left unfulfilled, in the Great Awakening.” (T-15.XI.10:10)

Silent Miracles

by Dimitri Saliuk, Student of A Course in Miracles

This October, my family and I visited California for a vacation that also included some work commitments. We enjoyed the wonderful weather in a seaside town. I was fortunate to find an in-person group for A Course in Miracles just a five-minute walk from our accommodation. Although it doesn’t rain often, one evening we experienced a downpour, and the temperature dropped significantly. While my children and I were getting ready to drive to my wife’s workplace, she was finishing up her shift.

We put on our jackets and got into our SUV. After about five minutes, just before an intersection, I heard a bump and a screeching sound to my left. A convertible compact car zoomed past me, cut me off, and honked. At that moment, I realized we had just been in a fender bender, and the situation was clear.

My older son exclaimed, “Wow, that car just bumped into us!” We pulled over right behind the convertible. For some reason, I felt almost excited, wanting to remain peaceful and helpful.
However, just a moment after stepping out of the car, I was confronted by a stocky man, about 50 or 60 years old. At first, he anxiously paced around his car, then headed toward me and exclaimed in a strong voice, “You hit me!” At that moment, all my excitement and joy seemed to drain away, replaced by fear and anxiety. He repeated his accusation, and I felt anger bubbling up, with an inner dialogue emerging: “Why do I have to deal with this?” Nevertheless, I managed to reply calmly and asked, “What is your name, sir? Are you alright?”

His surprised expression showed he hadn’t expected my tone. I introduced myself, and he told me his name.
I proceeded to share my perspective on the situation, but he disagreed and continued in an angry manner.

Suddenly, Lesson 191 came to mind: “I am the Holy Son of God Himself.” and I redirected that thought to the man standing in front of me: “You are the Holy Son of God Himself.” In that moment, the weight of negative emotions seemed to dissipate.
I then suggested that we invite a third party, such as the police or a nearby business, for possible video evidence to help us resolve our disagreement.

Cliff, the man’s name, fell silent for a few moments. Then, with a calmer and gentler voice, he said, “Listen, let’s go home. I’ll take care of my car, and you take care of yours.”

At that moment, I realized he was so afraid of me being the aggressor that he took on that role himself in the hope of not getting hurt — what A Course in Miracles describes as “a call for help.” I asked if we should exchange our information in case there was damage requiring significant expenses.

He was visibly uncomfortable with the idea but reluctantly agreed after stating, “I hardly have any damage; it looks like it’s mostly your car that got scratched.”
During the exchange of information, he seemed nervous, speaking with a trembling voice and shaky hands.

Finally, as we were about to part ways, I asked, “May I shake your hand, Cliff?” We shook hands, and I said, “I’m glad you’re alright, sir.”

The lesson flashed through my mind again: “You are the Holy Son of God Himself.” Cliff smiled and left.
When I got back into my car, my older son asked, “Why did he smile? He was so angry at first!”

Later, I reflected on how miracles happen all the time; they are often very subtle and quiet. What could have easily turned into a dramatic event instead became a quiet miracle, contributing to our collective awakening.

Dimitri Saliuk, born in 1991, is a stay-at-home dad who grew up in the small town of Zhydachiv in western Ukraine. Since early childhood, he experienced a pull toward spirituality.
In 2016, he moved to the United States, where, within less than a year, he was introduced to A Course in Miracles. It resonated deeply within him, and since then, he’s been a Course student. With the help of his mentors, teachers, and students, he implements the lessons in daily life.
