From the Garbage Heap to Awakening

by Rev. Sabrina Rollins, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

Once upon a time, in a faraway place, there was a vast pit in the center of a village. The pit was so deep its bottom could scarcely be seen from above. The villagers tossed all their trash into it, and because the pit was so enormous, they never feared it would overfill. The mayor appointed a caretaker, and each day the old, haggard woman tamped down the garbage and covered it with dirt so the foul odors would not rise and trouble the villagers.

As the years passed, the villagers discovered that the pit was also a convenient place to hide their misdeeds and unkind thoughts. Once thrown into the darkness, they no longer had to face their behavior or their loveless impulses. The poor caretaker worked tirelessly, day and night, to contain the stench of the ever-growing heap. But because she never complained, the villagers failed to notice that the pit was swelling — growing higher and wider with every passing day. They simply walked around it without a second glance. The mountain of garbage became part of the scenery, accepted as normal.

Until one day, something happened that had never happened before. A roaring sound erupted from the center of the pit — an ominous rumbling that shook the ground beneath the village. The earth quivered and cracked. A groaning, thunderous bellow echoed across the land. Flames burst forth, sending ash into the sky, darkening the villagers’ homes and leaving a bitter taste in their mouths.

Then the roar twisted into a sinister, piercing screech that reached the far corners of the world. The villagers tried desperately to silence the hateful sound, but nothing they did could stop it. The screech grew louder and louder until their ears throbbed and bled. Their eyes were drawn — hypnotically, unwillingly — to the mountain of garbage they themselves had created. With widening eyes, they peered into the pit.

Questions tumbled from their lips in disbelief. “Where did this pit come from?” “How did this happen?” “Why did we not see it?” But the scream from the pit drowned out their voices.

Then, two old wise sages stood at the edge of the mountain of mis-creations. “We must witness what we have hidden for eons,” they said. “Let us witness without attaching, without attacking, and without judgment.”

The villagers nodded. Silence fell. One by one, each villager looked upon their own part in the making of the mountain. They faced their fears and witnessed the innermost thoughts they had tried to bury. Many trembled, yet they remained steadfast until every last mis-deed, mis-creation, and hidden thought had been seen.

Then something wondrous occurred.

The garbage began to rise — piece by piece — lifting upward toward a brilliant light that appeared in the sky. As each piece touched the light, it dissolved, leaving only golden radiance in its place.

The villagers watched in awe as the mountain shrank — smaller and smaller and smaller — until at last it was gone.

The screaming ceased. The wailing stopped. The light poured down into each villager, filling their hearts with a new sensation. Love, warmth, and peace flowed through them and toward one another. Laughter bubbled up. Joy spread. Many began to dance.

Then a child’s voice rang out: “Look! Look at the pit!”

All heads turned. What they saw took their breath away. The pit was now filled with stunning flowers — colors so vivid they had never been seen before. A heavenly fragrance drifted through the air.

And then the caretaker appeared. No longer haggard or soiled, she stood before them luminous and beautiful. With a gentle smile, she raised her hands and the crowd fell silent.

“My name is Verity,” she said. “And I proclaim: Well done, my friends. Well done. You have witnessed your mis-creations without attaching, without attacking, without defending, and without judging yourselves or others. The Old Way is over. The Awakening has begun. Go forth in happiness. Love yourselves and one another. You are returning to your True Self.”

And — need I say it? — they all lived happily ever after.

This story was inspired and updated by the Sumerian mythology of the goddess Ereshkigal, Queen of the Underworld, yet it also echoes something deeply familiar in the world today.

Many feel that we are living through a Great Awakening, a time when what has long been hidden is rising to the surface. The “garbage” being uncovered in the news may be unsettling, but it is also a necessary part of what Helen Schucman recorded in her notes as a prerequisite to aid in the Celestial Speed-Up.

“No one can escape from illusions unless he looks at them, for not looking is the way they are protected.” (T-11.V.1)  Before anything can be released and healed, it must first be acknowledged and witnessed.

The mountain of mis-creations is not the work of a few — it is a collective symbol. Because we are One, we have all contributed to the dream of separation and fear. How can we undo what we have done?

“You must look upon your illusions and not keep them hidden, because they do not rest on their own foundation.”
(T-13.III.6:1)

And so, as these shadows come into the light, let us look upon them without judgment, without attack, and without the temptation to cast blame on those who appear to be the villains of the story.

This is a moment to turn inward with honesty and courage. To forgive ourselves for the thoughts we have hidden. To forgive others for the roles they have played in our dreams. To extend compassion to those who have personally endured the darkness now being revealed.

“It is your forgiveness that will bring the world of darkness to the light.” (W-p1.62.1:1)

Healing does not come from denial or condemnation. Healing comes from bringing the darkness to the Light, forgiving it, allowing what is false to dissolve, and remembering the truth of who we are. As the ego’s rule in this dream begins to crumble, a new awareness is emerging — one rooted in unity, love, and the recognition of our shared innocence.

“The Light has come. You are healed and you can heal.” (W-p1.75.1:1-2) Humanity’s healing is not somewhere in the future. It is happening now, through each of us, as we choose to witness our “pit of mis-creations” with love and forgiveness, rather than with fear, shame and blame. “Accept the holy instant as this year is born, and take your place, so long left unfulfilled, in the Great Awakening.” (T-15.XI.10:10)
