Laughter Is the Best Medicine
“The ego has never given you a sensible answer to anything.” (T-8.II.2:4) This was a line in the reading for discussion at a recent Sunday ACIM Study Group Meeting, in the section titled, “The Difference between Imprisonment and Freedom.”
When it was read, at first I smiled, then I heard myself laugh out loud! This was followed by a breakthrough: I saw exactly how VERY seriously I have always taken everything, and I mean everything — my responsibilities, my duties, the Course, doing-the-right-thing, decisions, life and its challenges, etc., etc.
Then I saw very clearly all the anger and judgements that come with holding that position. In that holy instant, the truth in that sentence radiated very brightly. It cracked open my self-imposed prison, and revealed the Light.
After years of scratching away at it with the Teachings, I was now seeing this from a new perspective — a miracle! I felt the beginnings of liberation from my own chains.
Hearing that laughter, and while sharing with the group, I remembered that in the Course it said something about the Son of God forgetting to laugh. The quote is actually: “Into eternity, where all is one, there crept a tiny, mad idea, at which the Son of God remembered not to laugh.” (T-27.VIII.6:2)
The following line from Jack Kornfield definitely resonated: “Laughter has a way of dissolving tension, bringing lightness to heavy moments, and reminding us not to take ourselves too seriously.”
A line in the reading in the following week’s meeting was: “Can God learn how not to be God?” (T-14.XI.2:3) Again, I heard myself laugh out loud. In that moment of laughter, I felt truly free. The ego was completely shut down, and all that was present was a Great Ray of Peace.
