I have no neutral thoughts.
1. The idea for today is a beginning step in dispelling the belief that your thoughts have no effect. ²Everything you see is the result of your thoughts. ³There is no exception to this fact. ⁴Thoughts are not big or little; powerful or weak. ⁵They are merely true or false. ⁶Those that are true create their own likeness. ⁷Those that are false make theirs.
2. There is no more self-contradictory concept than that of “idle thoughts.” ²What gives rise to the perception of a whole world can hardly be called idle. ³Every thought you have contributes to truth or to illusion; either it extends the truth or it multiplies illusions. ⁴You can indeed multiply nothing, but you will not extend it by doing so.
3. Besides your recognizing that thoughts are never idle, salvation requires that you also recognize that every thought you have brings either peace or war; either love or fear. ²A neutral result is impossible because a neutral thought is impossible. ³There is such a temptation to dismiss fear thoughts as unimportant, trivial and not worth bothering about that it is essential you recognize them all as equally destructive, but equally unreal. ⁴We will practice this idea in many forms before you really understand it.
4. In applying the idea for today, search your mind for a minute or so with eyes closed, and actively seek not to overlook any “little” thought that may tend to elude the search. ²This is quite difficult until you get used to it. ³You will find that it is still hard for you not to make artificial distinctions. ⁴Every thought that occurs to you, regardless of the qualities that you assign to it, is a suitable subject for applying today’s idea.
5. In the practice periods, first repeat the idea to yourself, and then as each one crosses your mind hold it in awareness while you tell yourself:
²This thought about _________ is not a neutral thought.
³That thought about _________ is not a neutral thought.
⁴As usual, use today’s idea whenever you are aware of a particular thought that arouses uneasiness. ⁵The following form is suggested for this purpose:
⁶This thought about ____________ is not a neutral thought, because I have no neutral thoughts.
6. Four or five practice periods are recommended, if you find them relatively effortless. ²If strain is experienced, three will be enough. ³The length of the exercise period should also be reduced if there is discomfort. (ACIM, W-16.1:1–6:3)
2025
I woke up with anxiety this morning. It was mostly about my children. My daughter had surgery yesterday, and it was rough. My son, who is living with me now, has been deeply depressed. Thoughts about them crowded my mind. Those thoughts were not neutral, and they were creating in their likeness. Yikes! It was like I had not learned anything from the Course.
So, what I did was to review all the lessons up to this one because I knew the answer was there, but the ego thoughts were obscuring it. At first, it wasn’t helping, but I persisted. Soon, I began to smile. It is easy to get caught up in the story that is unfolding and forget the purpose. I can use the story to go more deeply into the illusion or give it to the Holy Spirit to lift me out of the darkness. I chose the Holy Spirit, and He never lets me down.

We have talked about the importance of our thoughts as we’ve read the previous lessons and also from the Text. Today, Jesus wants to take us deeper into this understanding. There is so much for us to learn about our thoughts in this one lesson that we cannot have neutral thoughts. He begins by reinforcing a previous idea that all thoughts have an effect. In fact, everything you see is an effect of thought. Our thoughts projected outward make up the world we see. He emphasizes this as he tells us that ³There is no exception to this fact.
Last night, for a few minutes, I entertained the idea that the world is coming apart at the seams. All kinds of fear thoughts showed up to support this idea. When I looked at the world, I saw what I believed in that moment. I read something in the news that caught my attention, and the more I thought about it, the worse everything seemed.
If I had continued in that vein, I would have been deeply depressed, and I would have convinced myself that I am here and here is real.
But I do understand the power of thought, and this is not what I want to share within our one mind. I don’t want to strengthen these ideas and help them gain more momentum. I asked Jesus for help to untangle my mind from this kind of thinking, and I received it. But this very uncomfortable situation had a message for me. It reminded me that if the world seems out of control, it is because the mind is simply unhealed in that moment, not wrong. We can bring our thoughts back into alignment with Love, and the world will take on that form.
Actually, it already has for me. This morning, I look at the world, and I see many untrue thoughts rising to the surface to be seen and transformed. That’s a far different world than the one I was seeing last night. I changed my mind, and I changed the world I saw. I also added light to a darkened place in the mind, and so I helped thousands of others who were ready to make that shift. I am learning to respect the power of my thoughts.
This idea is reflected in Lesson 106 which says this:
Be still and listen to the truth today. ²For each five minutes spent in listening, a thousand minds are opened to the truth and they will hear the holy Word you hear. ³And when the hour is past, you will again release a thousand more who pause to ask that truth be given them, along with you. (ACIM, W-106.9:1-3)
In Chapter 2 we are told that ¹³There are no idle thoughts. ¹⁴All thinking produces form at some level. (ACIM, T-2.VI.9:13-14) This is echoed in today’s lesson. There is no more self-contradictory concept than that of “idle thoughts.” We are told that our thoughts produce form, and they also decide how we perceive what we have brought to form. It is not my thoughts alone that produced the form we see today, but they played a part. Even that I believe I can think apart from others is a major misconception. There are no private thoughts. We think with the same mind, and that cannot be too often noted.
I am watching my thoughts and choosing to forgive those I don’t want to propagate. When I see someone else expressing thoughts that are not in our best interest, I forgive that, too. Now that I understand the impact of my thoughts, I see this as a profitable way to spend my time, and it takes almost no effort on my part. When a friend expressed her anger at a political decision that she didn’t agree with, I didn’t try to talk her out of her opinion. I just love her and support her as she finds a way to navigate her path to enlightenment. I do the same for myself.
Forgiveness is simplified as I now recognize that there are no neutral thoughts and so no neutral effects. I know each thought brings me either peace or war, love or fear, and then I choose the effect I want to experience, and forgive the other and let it go. So simple.
