Celebrating a Journey

by Rev. Georgeanne Medved

Rev. Georgeanne MedvedI have not had much to say or write lately. Our Mother made her transition in June and I was so very happy for her, but also sad for myself and our family. Mother did not want to be on this plane anymore and refused all medications and help. She told each of us that she loved us and goodbye.

She was 93 and her organs simply shut down. Imagine the prayers we all said imploring God to take her in His arms the last ten days of her life. She wanted to be with God and we let go and let Him decide the day and time.

God was there. God was working one of His divine miracles. On the 10th day her fingernails turned blue and we knew it would be a matter of just a few hours. Seven hours later God took her and held her and hugged her and gave her his divine blessing for all of the struggles she accepted on earth. I was so happy for her! I thanked God that night, down on my knees reading lesson 108 of A Course in Miracles, “The Peace of God Is Shining in Me Now.”

A 93 year old usually has less than 20 people at their funeral and Mothers firm wish was to have a funeral but no showing. On the appointed day we gathered at the church and were overwhelmed. Seventy people came to the church to give Mother’s remains the royal send off. That was a miracle. God was right there telling us she did something right over the years. God was telling us that she raised three children that deserved to know that not only was she loved and well thought of but they were also. People came from all over Michigan and also from out of state to spend five hours honoring a woman who wore many hats. She was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, factory worker, care taker to the ill and dying and “Ma” to every teen in the city.

“Ma” let all the teens hang out at our house and tolerated finding extra bodies sleeping on our living room floor and in our basement on Saturday and Sunday mornings. She took everyone in, fed them, loved them and cared for them. She taught all of us abut God by her Godly actions. That was God’s plan for her and I could see it even then.

Lesson 187 of A Course in Miracles says, “Now you can perceive that by giving, your store is increased.” Her’s definitely was.

Mother was not perfect and admitted to that many times. Her biggest shortcoming in the past few years was being ornery (geriatric depression). Her temper was terrible at times and she wanted her way and would not budge an inch on any issue. I always thought her being ornery was God’s way of teaching me patience. When she flared up in front of me, Holy Spirit would help me sit quietly and keep my mouth shut and let her just run out of anger.

Patience is one of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit but has always been a challenge for me — just ask my husband. “You too be patient and stand firm because the Lord’s coming is near.” (James 5 v 8)

In honor of Mother I have reviewed and rededicated my life to bring the best I can be in my everyday life. I hope by example I can teach only Love to everyone I have contact with in my daily life. “This is my command: love each other.” (John 15 v 7) Holy Spirit, be my Guide please.
