Handing It Over: It’s the Key

by Rev. Colleen Fee, Ordained Ministerial Counselor

Truck problems: Friday night my truck would not start. I was stranded at my niece’s horse ranch, 30 miles from home. No mechanic was open. Fear came up about how to get home.

Hand it over to Holy Spirit.

Allison (an Angel), who works for my niece, shows up and asks if we need help. Yes, the truck won’t start and we need a ride home, but we live in Greeley. No problem, she was going that way anyway. The ride with Allison was an opportunity to have a nice conversation about working at the ranch.

I left the spare key in the truck for tow. It is safe to leave the truck unlocked on my niece’s property. We will meet the tow truck on Monday morning.

Saturday we pick up a rental car. Monday morning we call a mechanic and tow truck. As we go to meet the tow truck, fear comes up about how much all of this is going to cost.

Hand it over to Holy Spirit. (I do not know what anything means.)

As we wait for the tow truck, the weather becomes warmer. I decide to see if the truck will start. Using the spare key I left in the truck, the truck starts.

Thank you Holy Spirit!

I cancel the tow truck. I decide to leave the truck running as it has a full tank and I want to be sure to get it to the mechanic. I drive back to Greeley and pick up Deb so she can drive the rental. I feel relief for not needing a tow and being able to get it to the mechanic. I still have fear about why it wouldn’t start the night before. Maybe the cold weather? It has happened before in the cold.

Hand it over to Holy Spirit.

The mechanic said he will look at the truck in the next couple of days. It is a mechanic’s nightmare to have “intermittent” starting problems. It may be the fuel pump and cost $1,000 to replace. Sticker shock.

Hand it over to Holy Spirit.

I check in with the mechanic after the second day. The truck has started every time. The mechanic suggests a possible solution with fuel system but requires a part they have to order. He suggested the repair will be about $500 with no guarantee it will fix the problem. I decide to pick up the truck until the part comes in so I can return the rental. I fear the truck won’t start again before the repair and I will get stranded again. (I work 20 miles from home.)

I arrive at the mechanic and settle the bill. I take my keys out to start the truck. A thought comes to my mind that the truck is not going to start. It doesn’t start.

Hand it over to Holy Spirit.

Then I have the thought that this is a good thing. The truck is at the repair shop and won’t start. Thank you Holy Spirit! Now they can figure out WHY it doesn’t start!

Hand it over to Holy Spirit.

I exit the truck to go tell the mechanic it won’t start and have the thought, “It’s the key.” Then I immediately turn my attention to getting them out to look at the truck. The mechanic tries to start it and it still won’t start. They look under the hood and check the fuel line and starter. All seems in working condition.

I hand it over and think again, “Thank you Holy Spirit, they will figure this out.”

The mechanic gets the diagnostic computer hooked up to the truck and starts scanning the systems for a problem.

Normal.. normal.. normal.. normal.. (as it scans) and then.. “Faulty key.”

The mechanic says, “It’s the KEY!”

At first I was confused. Why did it always start for them? Then I realized I was using MY key when it wouldn’t start. I had used the SPARE key that I left in the truck for the tow truck driver to start it to bring to the mechanic. The spare key was the one I left at the repair shop for them to work on the truck.

The mechanic took the spare key and put it in the ignition and it started right up. Then he put MY key in the ignition and it wouldn’t start.

I started dancing up and down beside the truck!

He explained that the chip in the key can start to go bad and cause it not to work sometimes until it finally will not work at all. Without the “bad” key in the ignition, the diagnostic computer would not identify it as the problem. They had the “good” key for all of their previous tests. Truck starting problem solved. New key $85.

Handing it over to Holy Spirit. PRICELESS!

All through this experience I kept handing over my fear to Holy Spirit. Each time I experienced some relief and then another piece of the puzzle fell into place for a most benevolent outcome. I have to admit the Holy Spirit has a sense of humor about using an actual KEY for this mind healing around fear-based thoughts.
