I Behold the Son of God

by Rev. Gail Hamley, O.M.C.

Rev. Gail Hamley“Behold the Son of God, and look upon his purity and be still. In quiet look upon his holiness, and offer thanks unto his Father that no guilt has ever touched him.”
(T-13.X.11:10-11)

As I read this quote I was once again struck by the beauty of this Truth. I had just returned from visiting my daughter and her family on the east coast. I was a witness to the power of love between my daughter and her husband and he for her. Their love radiated such joy and acceptance for their two and three year old sons. Quietly and lovingly they instructed, redirected and accepted them. The boys, having distinct personalities and an abundance of wild energy, exploded in laughter, tears, exuberant playfulness and drop dead exhaustion, often within minutes of each expression!

During my visit, their daughter was born. She had been anticipated and prayed for. As I looked into her new little face, I recognized her as the essence of purity described in this quote. A gift and miracle of God’s divine expression.

Looking into the faces of my grandchildren, it is easy to be still and see their holiness. The Course instructs further, “You cannot enter into real relationships with any of God’s Sons unless you love them all and equally.” >(T-13.X.11:10-11)

Well… I have to honestly say that I do not really know what ‘love’ is! I have recently read that love is not an emotion. It is a decision. Okay. I can be kind. I can be thoughtful. I can even be compassionate. But, I also can be angry, selfish, thoughtless and even cruel. I have had to be painfully honest with myself as I have reviewed the numerous relationships that have dissolved, sometimes naturally and sometimes painfully. What made them different than the ones that have thrived and flourished? I have had to look deeper within myself as I my work requires extreme honesty in order to be able to serve with integrity. More importantly, I have a solemn commitment to my own spiritual growth. So I asked for help. “Holy Spirit, guide me to Truth and help me to be the essence of Love that You are within me!”

The answer reveals itself each moment. I continue to pray. The old anger and frustration are such habits. But then… the repairman who doesn’t do the repair properly and requires numerous phone calls to correct — I see his innocence and I get quiet and calm. The truth about past broken relationships are revealed to me and I see my part more clearly. Reacting to misperceptions, I have not seen the purity and the holiness in each one. I see someone who is not behaving the way I want them to. I have judged them mercilessly.

The Course continues, “Like you, my faith and my belief are centered on what I treasure. The difference is that I love only what God loves with me, and because of this I treasure you beyond the value that you set on yourself, even unto the worth that God has placed upon you. I love all that He created…” >(T-13.X.13:1-3)

How amazing it is to experience my life change so abruptly when I choose to stop   treasuring my misperceptions and look on the world anew through Spirit. I am struck that a new way of being has been birthed in me and that perhaps this is the true meaning of Christmas: a birthing of a new Reality: I behold the Son of God.
