Our Journey Home

by Rev. Peggy Rivera, O.M.C.

Rev. Peggy RiveraAs we grow up in the world of chaos, we encounter incidences that form who we become as adults. So enmeshed in pain, we wrestle with feelings of emptiness, depression, anxiety, and loneliness. We spiral downward into the depths of grief for the loss of the Self until we have gotten so buried in the darkness of despair that we feel there is no other place we can go.

What we don’t realize is that all of the feelings of rejection, self-loathing and anger began such a very long time ago that we have forgotten from where they arose and we have perpetually been repeating the same behavior, keeping us in those thought patterns that have kept us feeling alone and afraid. This is the job of the ego so it can maintain the lie of its existence.

Then one day we begin to hear a whisper. It is so quiet we cannot make out the words. And then we become quiet and listen. Gently the words, “I Love You” emanate from the silence. A spark of hope rises up within us. Who is that, speaking to me about Love?

In this silence we begin hear the promptings of the Holy Spirit summoning us back to peace, restoring us to that which we thought we lost. The ego wants to keep us in that state of delusion. We learn now that when we thought we separated from God, we made a decision to trust only ourselves. This kept a veil of fear over us so we could not communicate with our true source. But God is always waiting for us to remember who we really are.

In A Course in Miracles we are told, “The Holy Spirit is the spirit of joy. He is the Call to return with which God blessed the minds of His separated Sons.” (T-5.I.2:1-2) That invitation is always with us. “The principle of Atonement and the separation began at the same time. When the ego was made, God placed in the mind the Call to joy. This Call is so strong that the ego always dissolves at Its sound. That is why you must choose to hear one of two voices within you.” (T-5.II.3:1-4)

As we begin to hear the Call, we can choose to listen to It rather than that of the ego. The words of the Holy Spirit heal us. It is the Christ Mind that knows us as we really are. “He came into being at the time of the separation as protection inspiring the Atonement principle.” It is a gentle Voice reminding us that we are God’s Son and we have the freedom to choose to listen to ego or the Holy Spirit. It is not forceful because it respects our choice. It lovingly guides us back as we are willing.

When we choose to hear the Holy Spirit, we start to notice more joy in our lives. There is less fear, less pain. Slowly we realize that the choice to respond to The Call is really the only choice.

When we thought we could only trust ourselves we were hypnotized by the ego. Through the Holy Spirit we learn to trust in God, because only He is changeless. That is what we can always rely on.

One of my favorite sayings used to be, The only thing you can be sure of is change, nothing ever stays the same. Thankfully I have since learned that God is always the same, and His Love for us is unwavering, and we are forever safe in Him. “Spirit is in a state of grace forever, your reality is only spirit. Therefore you are in a state of grace forever.” (T-1.III.5:4-6) We are all finding our way back to God. The Text says “Ultimately, every member of the family of God must return.” (T-1.V.4:1)

And in Lesson 122 is says, “Gods plan for your salvation cannot change, nor can it fail. Be thankful it remains exactly as He planned it. Changelessly it stands before you like an open door, with warmth and welcome calling from beyond the doorway, bidding you to enter in and make yourself at home, where you belong.” (W-pI.122.5)

There are some days that feel like I have taken one step forward and two steps backward. But I know that I am on the journey Home. It is up to me to be willing to follow the path He has beckoned me on. I know He is patient with me and He allows me to take my time. When I trip over obstacles, He picks me up and supports me. I am no longer afraid of the dark because darkness is cancelled in the light. In the light I will find my way Home to my Loving Father and I will meet you there forever in God’s Love.
