The One About Waiting

by Rev. Stephan Mead, O.M.C.

Rev. Stephan Mead“When my check comes, I’ll finally get my affairs straightened out — then I’ll be happy.

“If she forgives me, and gives me another chance — then for sure I’ll be happy.

“All I need is for it not to rain next Tuesday, then the event will go well — and I’ll be happy.

“Is this day of hell ever going to end? At least after work I’ll be able to go home and relax — then I’ll be happy.”

Waiting, waiting, waiting! Does the ego have a better trick? Practically every conversation between Course students will reinforce the concept that, “the only time that exists is right now.” Then, while this concept is being discussed, the students will leave reality and start talking about “waiting,” waiting for something to happen. Waiting to finish the ACIM lessons, waiting for the next workshop to begin, waiting for a future occurrence when at long last they’ll be happy. Waiting for the impossible to become possible.

How can I bring that concept into an actual experience?

Can you imagine what it means to have no cares, no worries, no anxieties, but merely to be perfectly calm and quiet all the time? Yet that is what time is FOR; to learn just that and nothing more. God’s Teacher cannot be satisfied with His teaching until it constitutes ALL your learning. He has not fulfilled His teaching function until you have become such a consistent learner that you learn ONLY of Him. When this has happened, you will no longer need a teacher or time in which to learn.

One source of perceived discouragement from which you suffer is your belief that this takes time, and that the results of the Holy Spirit’s teaching are far in the future. This is not so. For the Holy Spirit uses time in His Own way, and is not bound by it. And all the waste that time seems to bring with it is due but to your identification with the ego, which uses time to support its belief in destruction.

The ego, like the Holy Spirit, uses time to convince you of the inevitability of the goal and end of teaching. To the ego the goal is death, which IS its end. But to the Holy Spirit the goal is life, which HAS no end. ACIM T-15.I.paragraphs 1-2.

The harder we try to “not” wait, the more it seems that at some future point in time, and with much practice, we will succeed in finally “getting” this ACIM thing. Just from writing this article, we see again that we really believe we are here, in bodies, “in time.” Then we “come to believe” that our ideas about time are wrong (that this “takes time” a “looooong time”).

Ego is a “waiter” and a time “waster.” When we become willing to accept Holy Spirit’s use of time, our perception changes. Holy Spirit doesn’t “waste” anything. Holy Spirit doesn’t waste any upset, any situation, any concern, but Helps us see that we have “no cares, no worries, no anxieties,” etc., when we are “willing to learn only of Him.” Then it’s game over, time over!
