The Sandbox

by Rev. Veronika Wilcox, O.M.C.

Rev. Veronika WilcoxI am currently enjoying going through Pathways of Light course 210: Star Child again. In the beginning of the course, life in this world is compared to playing in a sandbox. ‘Imagine a child playing in a sandbox, making an imaginary castle with its own little kingdom in the sand.’

My brother and myself, when we were children, played just like this on the floor of our living room. We would take some chess figures and arrange them in such a way that we each had our own kingdom. Then we would put toy houses and toy trains and trams around. When we finished, we would stage a war and destroy it all. Afterwards we peacefully tidied it all up.

When I hit a problem, I still tend to forget that I am playing with chess figures, that is, that I am making up images in my mind, arrange them in a certain way and then go to war with the images in the mind of another. I forget that I have made it all up.

Today I remember that playing with images is not the real thing. The real thing is what God knows about each situation, and that is always loving, wise and peaceful.

My Sandbox

Today I have left
My old sandbox behind.

I had played quite happily in it,
Thinking that was all there was to life.

I met friends with whom I played
the game of pretense.

I had really quite enjoyed myself
in my old sandbox.

But today I decide to leave,
for the sole reason that I had outgrown
playing in sandboxes.

Amen
