Never Forget to Laugh
Personal Recollections of Bill Thetford, Co-Scribe of A Course in Miracles
by Carol M. Howe
For the first time, an intimate portrait of the life and spiritual path of Bill Thetford, a brilliant and accomplished psychologist and co-scribe of A Course In Miracles. As one of he world's foremost authorities on how the ego develops, Bill then provided a way—through ACIM—to release that ego, for himself and everyone.
Not only his career path as he moves from one leading-edge institution to another, but his inner life, is here revealed to an extent not found anywhere else. Bill steadily shifted his attitude, released his own grievances and judgments, and ended his life in a state of great joy and inner peace. Bill's story is a spell-binding tale. His own path to awakening—his choice to change his mind—provides a proven, timeless, and specific guide anyone can follow to replace fear or upset with grace and peace of mind.
Reviews and Testamonials
This book is not simply a biography, but a body of work that integrates the facts of Bill's life with Course teachings and the personal reflections of more than thirty friends in a way that creates a unique and meaningful experience for the reader....
After reading this book, we found it hard to imagine incorporating so many details about Bill into one document. Carol has accurately expressed the impressions and impact that Bill had on the many of us who loved and appreciated him so deeply. In many ways, it is a love story about Bill and his many friends, from comfortable close associates to casual acquaintances, whose insights and experiences with him are included throughout. It's also a love story about Bill and the Course and, finally, about Bill and God. —from the Foreward by Gerald Jamposky, M.D. and Diane Cirincione, Ph.D.
Never Forget to Laugh, while thorough in examining the life of Bill Thetford, is also a guidebook for learning to leave grievances behind (and who among us doesn't harbor at least a few grievances) and guiding us, through the example of Thetford and specific lessons from ACIM, to true peace of mind.
By the time of his death in 1988 at age 65, Bill Thetford had practiced these lessons to perfection, leaving this world of time and space free of guilt and grievances. As his time on earth grew to an end he was able to release all that held him back from true peace. Would that we could all reach that goal.
Though I never knew Bill Thetford personally, after reading this remarkable account of his life I feel he's an old friend. I know others will feel the same — not just students of ACIM but those who love biographies of interesting people, spiritual seekers of all kinds and for anyone looking for a better way to live. —Alice T. Just want to offer my warm congratulations on your wonderful biography of Bill Thetford. It is deeply moving and, most of all, an inspired teaching of Course principles. . . .
I'm enjoying a second reading of Never Forget to Laugh and recommending it to my Course friends and family. Thank you for your courage and dedication in bringing to the world a remarkable first-person story of another great teacher.
[This book] is becoming one of those companion books to the Course, along with Absence from Felicity and Disappearance of the Universe, whose Course teachings continue to deepen and inspire me to practice forgiveness. I need these "witnesses" to who we are, such as Bill and yourself.
Thanks, again, for fulfilling this particular assignment. In gratitude, DL

AnonymousDec 31, 1969, 08:00 PMI'm in the middle of reading this book and it's very interesting. It talks about Bill's past, the progression of his personality and interests, his work with the government and the circumstances that led up to his significant role in bringing forth A Course in Miracles. While reading this I felt a peaceful, loving presence all around me - this might not happen for others but I felt it was Bill himself. I am looking forward to finishing this book!
