Undoing Old Beliefs

When I started Lesson 1 of A Course in Miracles back in 1995, I became afraid. After all, it says “Nothing I see in this room [on this street, from this window, in this place] means anything. After reading it, I sat quietly. I knew that if I pursued this line of study my entire life would change. I sensed this Truth and it frightened me because I did not know how or in what way it would change… but, it would.

Just as I was sitting there contemplating all of this, my phone rang. It was my friend who had attended our first ACIM group with me. She was experiencing the same thing I was. We talked awhile and somehow I knew I was going to continue.

My life up to this point was difficult. I was recently divorced, raising two children as a single parent. Was there any reason not to move into some other reality? I decided to continue. My friend did not. After a time, our friendship faded. Our paths became dramatically different.

I started to look at everything differently. I looked at thoughts as just thoughts and to see that everything in my world was the result of training and beliefs. The beginning lessons in A Course in Miracles were undoing this training and I felt a sense of renewal and expansion (after releasing my initial fear — which came incidentally once I made the decision to continue).

Now in 2011, I am in awe of these powerful lessons, which I still practice each and every day. Today my lesson might be “Nothing in this situation means anything.” or “Everyone I see is an expression of Divine Consciousness, which is Love.” The underlying lesson is that I am undoing old beliefs and thoughts and renewing with Truth. It is humbling and it is beautiful.
