How Gratitude Journaling Became Like Brushing My Teeth

Back in 2009 or so, we (a group of women in recovery) started a Women of Gratitude daily gratitude sharing Yahoo Group. I feel like we “stole” the idea from a group of men that were doing similar amongst themselves in our NC city via email. We one-upped them by starting an “official” Yahoo Group (just playing, no one upping!)! Having the Group enabled women to join from all over the world. It was pretty cool (Yahoo no longer supports Groups anymore).

Gratitude journaling became a lifeline for me personally, for many years. I wrote through 2014, when I stopped due to egoic issues. I did not feel safe being vulnerable at that time. Of course, it was all in my head and had absolutely nothing to do with me but stinking thinking is stinking thinking (as most thinking is!)! “³The remembrance of love therefore brings invulnerability with it.”(ACIM, T-10.III.3:3) I forgot Who I was temporarily. Nevertheless, this group, and the act of writing daily became so ingrained in me that if I skipped a day I would feel as I would the few times in my life when I left my home in such a hurry I forgot to brush my teeth…totally off kilter and, well, gross.
It’s time…the time is now…time to get back at it. I know that doing that work on a daily basis (sometimes for hours), soaking in the positivity of “life” and its occurrences, etc., totally and completely set me up for this BEAUTIFUL “world” I live in today, chock full of joy and love…no matter what is going on around me.

Will you join me?

Today I am grateful for the rain. With our, um, eight dogs, it can mask as a pain (“I don’t want to get my paws wet though…”) but it is a delight. Rain is a beautiful reminder of renewal and growth, especially when it awakens the grass and brings new life to the landscape. It’s a perfect image of how gratitude can nourish our own inner gardens, helping us to flourish and thrive.

Mindful Moment

When all is spinning around & around…
it’s okay.
The chaos is not reality.
Though it is tugging on me, tapping my shoulder, pulling at my hair, nudging my ribs,
…it is all temporary and will pass. I will retreat inward and pause in the simplicity and joyful moment that is NOW. In this instant of gratitude is all else released…and I am at
…Peace!

Love’s Steady Flame in the Midst of Chaos

Today, the world feels particularly chaotic with the wars, climate change, politics, disease, etc., etc.…It is too easy to get caught up in the negativity (how often are we bombarded by the news even when avoiding it?!), far too easy to believe that love is somehow overpowered by the darkness. But as I take a deep breath and remember the teachings of A Course in Miracles, a sense of peace washes over me. Ahhh, a return to sanity!

ACIM reminds us that the world we perceive is an illusion, a projection of our separated mind (ego). This ego thrives on fear, anger, and judgment – the very things fueling the chaos. Yet, beneath this illusion lies a deeper truth: the truth of Love.

Love isn’t something fleeting or external; it is the very essence of our being. It’s the oneness that connects us all, the power that transcends every perceived separation. Even when the world seems to be falling apart, Love remains constant, a steady flame burning ever so brightly.

Let us all remember the kindness of strangers, the unwavering love of a family member or friend, or the unexpected beauty found in nature. These glimpses of love, however small, are reminders of its enduring presence. If you have a few minutes, put your hands over your heart, pause, close your eyes, and tune into loves vibration. I call this my soul tingling…it’s there for us whensoever we need it!

My task, then, isn’t to fight the chaos but to shift my perspective. Through forgiveness, by letting go of judgments and choosing to see the world with Love’s vision, I can contribute to the healing. My own inner peace becomes a ripple in the pond, affecting the world around me, even in a small way.

This doesn’t mean ignoring the problems or pretending everything is perfect. It means acknowledging the darkness while choosing to focus on Love’s light. It means holding onto the truth that Love always prevails, even in the midst of chaos.

Tonight, I’ll close my eyes and visualize Love’s light radiating from me, reaching out to touch others. Perhaps, by remembering Love’s truth and actively choosing love, we can all contribute to making the world a little more filled with the light of Love.
