Choosing Peace in an Unpeaceful Climage

I spend a lot of time on Facebook because a good deal of my ministry is through social media. This has been a terrific way to connect with many people all over the world. On the other hand, since the election, it has been a difficult place to visit sometimes. It is filled with posts that are divisive, fearful and blaming. As I read them sometimes I feel my own ego mind triggered and I am tempted to join the fray. Here is how I am handling this.

I am not going to try to avoid all these posts, not going to unfriend anyone. They are like a gauge to show me where there is still fear in my mind, thoughts that I need to give to the Holy Spirit for purification. On the other hand, I am not going to overwhelm myself with bad news. I am not going to go looking for scary stuff for the ego mind to work with.

Another thing I am doing is that when I start thinking that there is something to fear, I stop myself and ask for another way to see. I remember that I could see peace instead of this. I remember that this is my opportunity to bless my brothers and thus recognize that I am blessed. I remember that I can accept God for myself and for everyone else as there is only one mind. It doesn’t matter where in the mind that God is accepted, we all benefit.

I still have opinions because my mind is not entirely healed, and I have to remember that an opinion is not fact and that only the ego thinks it needs to be right. When I find myself falling prey to that desire to convince someone else that I am right and they are wrong, I step back from that desire.  When I read a post that I agree with, but that post is promoting fear and guilt, I step back and remember that the peace of God is my only goal.

I think about whether or not I should act. I don’t think that acting or not acting is important. What does matter is if I am acting from fear or from love. No matter how much I disagree with a decision that my government has made, I don’t help anyone if I add to the fear that prompted that decision. All decisions to defend, whether from me or the president of the United States, is a fearful decision. Any action I choose to take to influence things is taken only as I am so guided. In the end the most important thing I can do is to accept the Atonement for myself, as always. As I accept it for myself, I accept it for everyone.
