Seeing Past Bodies to the Light of Love

Christ’s vision has one law. It does not look upon a body, and mistake it for the Son whom God created. It beholds a light beyond the body; an idea beyond what can be touched, a purity undimmed by errors, pitiful mistakes, and fearful thoughts of guilt from dreams of sin. It sees no separation. And it looks on everyone, on every circumstance, all happenings and all events, without the slightest fading of the light it sees. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 158, W-pI.158.7. The recognition that the Son of God is not a body is the most emphasized message in A Course in Miracles. It is a theme that appears repeatedly in the Text along with over 20 lessons in the Workbook for Students. Accepting this idea is the foundation of forgiveness. As we learn that we are not a body, but Mind in the Mind of Love, seeing with Christ’s Vision comes naturally.

Nothing that Love does needs forgiveness. It is only what bodies seem to do that needs to be forgiven. Mind cannot harm itself. Bodies can appear to harm other bodies, but only in illusion. To see with Christ’s Vision, the body must be overlooked, for the body is an attempt to limit the extension of Love. But Love cannot be limited. Christ’s vision sees beyond the body’s limits to the eternal extension of Love. This is forgiveness.

As we let go of the false images of limitation in the world, the Light of Love flows into our awareness. This is how we free ourselves to be the Love that we were created to be. Today our practice is to welcome the Holy Spirit’s Light in our minds with willingness to see with His vision. As we are willing to overlook the forms in the world and see the eternal presence of Love, we will remember Who we are.

Accept Love, and Fear Disappears

Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven, because that is where the laws of God operate truly, and they can operate only truly because they are the laws of truth. But seek this only, because you can find nothing else. There is nothing else. God is All in all in a very literal sense. All being is in Him Who is all Being. You are therefore in Him since your being is His. Healing is a way of forgetting the sense of danger the ego has induced in you, by not recognizing its existence in your brother. This strengthens the Holy Spirit in both of you, because it is a refusal to acknowledge fear. Love needs only this invitation. It comes freely to all the Sonship, being what the Sonship is. By your awakening to it, you are merely forgetting what you are not. This enables you to remember what you are. (A Course in Miracles, T-7.IV.7. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

As we accept universal Love, fear disappears. Seeking the truth of universal Love is seeking the Kingdom of Heaven. This seeking is guaranteed to succeed because there is nothing else to find in truth. God (Love) is all that is real. In Love there can be no fear nor sense of danger or harm. As we accept that only Love is real, fear falls away. Today and every day is a great time to practice this. This is what time is for.

The Engine That Powers Our Awakening

Never approach the holy instant after you have tried to remove all fear and hatred from your mind. That is its function. Never attempt to overlook your guilt before you ask the Holy Spirit’s help. That is His function. Your part is only to offer Him a little willingness to let Him remove all fear and hatred, and to be forgiven. On your little faith, joined with His understanding, He will build your part in the Atonement and make sure that you fulfill it easily. And with Him, you will build a ladder planted in the solid rock of faith, and rising even to Heaven. Nor will you use it to ascend to Heaven alone. (A Course in Miracles, T-18.V.2. The most important habit we need to have is to bring every apprehension or disturbance of our peace to the Holy Spirit with willingness to let Him undo it. It is impossible that we can undo fear and guilt alone.

The ego, the belief in the lie that we are alone, is an insane idea. Being insane, it has no reason so it is incapable of using its “reasoning” to undo any problem, any perception of fear or guilt. That is why we must be vigilant to watch for any disturbance and equally determined to bring every disturbance to the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit’s reason is founded in truth. When we are willing to receive His reasoning, falsity is recognized for what it is and easily let go. The truth of our oneness in Love freely flows in to take the place of the false ideas that are let go. Our little willingness to let the Holy Spirit do His job is the engine that powers our journey Home to remember God’s Love and claim it as our own. Today we will practice our willingness.

Just See Innocence

“Earlier, I said that the Holy Spirit shares the goal of all good teachers, whose ultimate aim is to make themselves unnecessary by teaching their pupils all they know. The Holy Spirit wants only this, for sharing the Father’s Love for His Son, He seeks to remove all guilt from his mind that he may remember his Father in peace. Peace and guilt are antithetical, and the Father can be remembered only in peace. Love and guilt cannot coexist, and to accept one is to deny the other. Guilt hides Christ from your sight, for it is the denial of the blamelessness of God’s Son.” (A Course in Miracles, T-13.I.1. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

Today we practice seeing innocence in everyone we meet or even think of. We remain vigilant to see innocence in everyone and everything, everywhere, for we want to remember our Father. We share Holy Spirit’s one goal today, that we return to our Father in peace. We bless and are blessed. When we just see innocence, we have removed the barrier to awareness of Love’s Presence.

The Holiness of God Is in Everyone

I thank You, Father, knowing You will come to close each little gap that lies between the broken pieces of Your holy Son. Your Holiness, complete and perfect, lies in every one of them. And they are joined because what is in one is in them all. How holy is the smallest grain of sand, when it is recognized as being part of the completed picture of God’s Son! The forms the broken pieces seem to take mean nothing. For the whole is in each one. And every aspect of the Son of God is just the same as every other part. (A Course in Miracles, T-28.IV.9. The world seen through the body’s eyes presents only images of disconnected forms. It seems to prove that separation is real. Yet images of themselves have no substance nor meaning. To believe that images are real, we must make up a meaning to give each image. Yet this only masks the fact that the images are empty and have nothing to give.

Beyond these empty images lies the holiness of God, one and undivided, the same everywhere. The oneness of Love is all meaning. There is nothing else.

We are offered infinite, changeless Love in every instant. We need only be willing to set aside the empty images by letting go of the meaning we have given them. This is forgiveness.

We have been given the Holy Spirit in our mind to teach us that the forms that we thought were so important offer us nothing we really want. Then we freely let go of what is no longer wanted, making way for the unity of Love to fill the space vacated by letting go of the empty image. This is our purpose now. It is our journey Home to our place in the Love of God.

Accepting the Holy Instant’s Gift

The holy instant in which you and your brother were united is but the messenger of love, sent from beyond forgiveness to remind you of all that lies beyond it. Yet it is through forgiveness that it will be remembered.

And when the memory of God has come to you in the holy place of forgiveness you will remember nothing else [but God], and memory will be as useless as learning, for your only purpose will be creating [extending Love]. Yet this you cannot know until every perception has been cleansed and purified, and finally removed forever. Forgiveness removes only the untrue, lifting the shadows from the world and carrying it, safe and sure within its gentleness, to the bright world of new and clean perception. There is your purpose now. And it is there that peace awaits you. (A Course in Miracles, T-18.IX.13:3-14:5. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

Through forgiveness we become a messenger of Love. In this time of gift-giving, let us give the most important gift of all. As we open to the memory of God in our minds, Love flows through and is extended to include every brother. As we allow this extension to flow through our mind consistently, our perceptions are cleansed and purified, and all that is untrue is removed from our minds.

We receive messages of Love and peace from the Christ Mind and see the Christ Mind in every brother. This is the implementation of the message, “peace on earth, good will toward all men.” This message we happily receive and give to every brother.

Paying Attention to Holy Spirit’s Messages

…the world was meant to be a place where God could enter not, and where His Son could be apart from Him. Here was perception born, for knowledge could not cause such insane thoughts. But eyes deceive, and ears hear falsely.

As sight was made to lead away from truth, it can be redirected. Sounds become the call for God, and all perception can be given a new purpose by the One Whom God appointed Savior to the world. Follow His light, and see the world as He beholds it. Hear His Voice alone in all that speaks to you. And let Him give you peace and certainty, which you have thrown away, but Heaven has preserved for you in Him. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 241, W-pII.3.2:4-6;4. The Holy Spirit is teaching us that the body is incapable of showing us the truth because the body itself is not true; it’s an illusion. We are being asked to shift our attention to our inner vision and hearing, which receives the messages the Holy Spirit has for us — the messages of truth. These messages cannot be received by the body, for they are given to us in our minds.

Because we believe in the idea of separation, our minds are confused about what is true and what is false. The Holy Spirit can shine His Light on our misperceptions so that we can take His bridge out of the false world and into the Light of God’s Love. Here is the absolute certainty of God’s changeless creation, where we can trust that only Love is real. We learn that the forms in the world are simply calls for Love and these calls are always answered by the Holy Spirit with Love.

Today we practice giving our attention to our inner vision and hearing so that we can recognize that Love is everywhere and we are eternally safe.
