Happiness Is an Inside Job

What could you want forgiveness cannot give? Do you want peace? Forgiveness offers it. Do you want happiness, a quiet mind, a certainty of purpose, and a sense of worth and beauty that transcends the world? Do you want care and safety, and the warmth of sure protection always? Do you want a quietness that cannot be disturbed, a gentleness that never can be hurt, a deep, abiding comfort, and a rest so perfect it can never be upset?

All this forgiveness offers you, and more. It sparkles on your eyes as you awake, and gives you joy with which to meet the day. It soothes your forehead while you sleep, and rests upon your eyelids so you see no dreams of fear and evil, malice and attack. And when you wake again, it offers you another day of happiness and peace. All this forgiveness offers you, and more. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 122, W-pI.122.1-2. We all already have the means within our mind for complete release from the dream of fear and guilt. The question is, will we choose to use this means to be free? When will we tire of going down allies and detours that never bring us lasting happiness. We all reach a turning point at which we decide to look for a better way than seeking solutions based upon the past.

The Course is teaching us to recognize that the world cannot offer us happiness and peace. None of the forms that seem to appeal to us contain anything but false hopes and transitory dreams. The answer lies with turning to the Guide within Who remembers the truth about what we are.

This is the Holy Spirit, our true Self. As we choose this Guide to lift the veil of false hopes and vein imaginings, the dawn of the Light of Love will come into our minds. Where we saw lack and loss we will see the certainty of God’s ever-present, limitless Love. Where we saw guilt we will see the innocence of Love. Where we saw an adversary, we will see and answer the call for Love as we join with our brothers who are one with us in truth. There is a world forgiveness offers where peace abides, Love is changeless and happiness is beyond what words can describe.

Today we choose the Guide to perfect happiness.

Joining in True Forgiveness

The world can give no gifts of any value to a mind that has received what God has given as its own. God wills salvation be received today, and that the intricacies of your dreams no longer hide their nothingness from you.

Open your eyes today and look upon a happy world of safety and of peace. Forgiveness is the means by which it comes to take the place of hell. In quietness it rises up to greet your open eyes, and fill your heart with deep tranquility as ancient truths, forever newly born, arise in your awareness. What you will remember then can never be described. Yet your forgiveness offers it to you.

When we give exclusive attention to what the body’s senses present to us, our minds are closed to the inspiration and vision of the Holy Spirit, our true Self. Everything observed through the body is a projection of the thought system of separation and represents the denial of the oneness of God’s Love.

If we want to be happy, we need to shift our attention to the Mind of our true Self Who sees the Light of Truth beyond all appearances in the dream. Our Self knows and accepts God’s gifts of peace, joy and limitless Love. As we are willing, our true Self will help us recognize the presence of God’s gifts everywhere.

As our attention becomes more dedicated to letting our Self be our Guide moment by moment, we will experience God’s blessing more and more. The chaos of the world will have less effect on us. No matter what storm seems to surround us, we will remain in our center of peace. From this center, we can bring peace to the world. The storms will diminish. We will join with our brothers in true forgiveness and let the real world of innocence replace the world of guilt and fear. This is our function.

Our Journey to Freedom from Hell

I am the holy Son of God Himself. I cannot suffer,
cannot be in pain; I cannot suffer loss, nor fail to do
all that salvation asks.

You who perceive yourself as weak and frail, with futile hopes and devastated dreams, born but to die, to weep and suffer pain, hear this: All power is given unto you in earth and Heaven. There is nothing that you cannot do. You play the game of death, of being helpless, pitifully tied to dissolution in a world which shows no mercy to you. Yet when you accord it mercy, will its mercy shine on you.

Then let the Son of God awaken from his sleep, and opening his holy eyes, return again to bless the world he made. In error it began, but it will end in the reflection of his holiness. Do we want to be happy? Do we want to experience the totality of God’s limitless, changeless Love? Then we need to stop playing the game of judgment. It is our judgments that bring us pain and fear, guilt and the appearance of death. As we forgive — let go of judgment — we show mercy to the world. We see past the imagined appearance of separation to the reality of oneness in God’s Love. As we turn over all our judgments, our perceptions and interpretations to the Holy Spirit and let Him judge on our behalf, we free ourselves from hell. And as we free ourselves, we free the world.

Today we would walk with Holy Spirit at our side, willing to let Him show us all that He sees in place of our imagined images. It is a journey toward freedom from hell.

Letting Love’s Oneness Return

‘I rest in God.’ This thought will bring to you the rest and quiet, peace and stillness, and the safety and the happiness you seek. ‘I rest in God.’ This thought has power to wake the sleeping truth in you, whose vision sees beyond appearances to that same truth in everyone and everything there is. Here is the end of suffering for all the world, and everyone who ever came and yet will come to linger for a while. Here is the thought in which the Son of God is born again, to recognize himself.

In Him you have no cares and no concerns, no burdens, no anxiety, no pain, no fear of future and no past regrets. In timelessness you rest, while time goes by without its touch upon you, for your rest can never change in any way at all. You rest today. And as you close your eyes, sink into stillness. Let these periods of rest and respite reassure your mind that all its frantic fantasies were but the dreams of fever that has passed away. Let it be still and thankfully accept its healing. No more fearful dreams will come, now that you rest in God. Take time today to slip away from dreams and into peace. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 109, W-pI.109.2,5. We need to train our minds to consistently look beyond every appearance in the world. By definition an appearance is something perceived that is believed to be different from what we believe we are. This appearance is inherently meaningless because in truth, we are one with all that is Real. There is nothing true to perceive outside of us.

When we let ourselves rest in God, we are resting in the changeless peace and safety of God’s Love. Nothing else exists in truth. We rest in God when we let the Holy Spirit, our true Self, guide our vision. It will always show us the truth beyond all appearances.

The daily practice of mentally stepping back from our focus on appearances and resting in God’s peace will help us learn to disregard the meaning we give appearances and remember our safety and our joy. With this practice we bring peace to the world.

Letting Go of Thoughts That Hurt

I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts.

Father, Your Son is perfect. When I think that I am hurt in any way, it is because I have forgotten who I am, and that I am as You created me. Your Thoughts can only bring me happiness. If ever I am sad or hurt or ill, I have forgotten what You think, and put my little meaningless ideas in place of where Your Thoughts belong, and where they are. I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts. The Thoughts I think with You can only bless. The Thoughts I think with You alone are true.

I will not hurt myself today. For I am far beyond all pain. My Father placed me safe in Heaven, watching over me. And I would not attack the Son He loves, for what He loves is also mine to love. (W-pII.281)

God’s Will for us is perfect happiness and perfect peace because He gave us all of His Love. If we perceive any other condition, it can only be because we have covered God’s Thought of Love with a false idea of what we are. Because Love is one, an identity that is separate and distinct unto itself could never be true. It is an idea in opposition to the oneness of God’s Love.

It is only our belief in this false idea that seems to make guilt, fear and illness real. We can learn to recognize the unreality of these thoughts if we are willing to accept our inner Teacher’s lessons. He would teach us that we remain indivisible Love. He would teach us that all we look upon is one with us and thus there is nothing to fear.

Holy Spirit, teach me to see as you see today. Give me your strength to see beyond the veil of separation. Today I would accept Your vision and learn that I remain as God created me along with everyone, for we are God’s one Son.

Accepting True Healing

We will be still and listen for the Voice of healing, which will cure all ills as one, restoring saneness to the Son of God.

We waken hearing Him, and let Him speak to us five minutes as the day begins, and end the day by listening again five minutes more before we go to sleep. Our only preparation is to let our interfering thoughts be laid aside, not separately, but all of them as one. They are the same. We have no need to make them different, and thus delay the time when we can hear our Father speak to us. We hear Him now. We come to Him today.

With nothing in our hands to which we cling, with lifted hearts and listening minds we pray:

Only salvation can be said to cure.
Speak to us, Father, that we may be healed.

And we will feel salvation cover us with soft protection, and with peace so deep that no illusion can disturb our minds, nor offer proof to us that it is real. …This is the day when healing comes to us. The key to hearing the Holy Spirit’s Voice is letting go of our interfering thoughts. This is why forgiveness is a major emphasis of the Course. Our judgments keep us locked into believing the dream is real. The forms of the world we judge as valuable interfere with receiving Holy Spirit’s inspiration. Giving value to form makes us unwilling to look beyond the form and unreceptive to the Holy Spirit’s vision, which sees beyond all form.

Today we remind ourselves that no form in the world offers us anything we really want. We want the peace of God. We want to remember His changeless Love. We want to remember the Truth of What we are, for it is the Truth that sets us free.

If It’s Not Love, Disregard It

You see what you expect, and you expect what you invite. Your perception is the result of your invitation, coming to you as you sent for it. Whose manifestations would you see? Of whose presence would you be convinced? For you will believe in what you manifest, and as you look out so will you see in. Two ways of looking at the world are in your mind, and your perception will reflect the guidance [ego or Holy Spirit] you have chosen.

I am the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, and when you see me it will be because you have invited Him.

When you want only love you will see nothing else. The contradictory nature of the witnesses you perceive is merely the reflection of your conflicting invitations.

The power of decision is your one remaining freedom as a prisoner of this world. You can decide to see it right. …You cannot really give anything but love to anyone or anything, nor can you really receive anything but love from them. All we can really give or receive is Love because only Love is real. If we see another as giving us anything but Love, it is because we have chosen ego as our guide. Being the denial of Love, the ego cannot see Love and will only show us manifestations of lovelessness. If we want to experience Love, we must choose the Guide Who knows what Love is and wants you to know It.

To choose the Guide to Love, we must choose to turn over all our judgments to Him. He will always judge for us by choosing the reality of Love and disregarding everything else. Under His guidance we will become messengers of Love, bringing healing to our brothers and ourselves. We will find the Love we seek and rest in Love’s peace and happiness. This is how we bring salvation to ourselves and the world.
