Accepting the Gift of Peace

You have one test, as sure as God, by which to recognize if what you learned is true. If you are wholly free of fear of any kind, and if all those who meet or even think of you share in your perfect peace, then you can be sure that you have learned God’s lesson, and not your own. Unless all this is true, there are dark lessons in your mind that hurt and hinder you, and everyone around you. The absence of perfect peace means but one thing: You think you do not will for God’s Son what his Father wills for him. Every dark lesson teaches this, in one form or another. And each bright lesson with which the Holy Spirit will replace the dark ones you [no longer want], teaches you that you will with the Father and His Son.

Those who remember always that they know nothing, and who have become willing to learn everything, will learn it. But whenever they trust themselves [alone], they will not learn. They have destroyed their motivation for learning by thinking they already know. Think not you understand anything until you pass the test of perfect peace, for peace and understanding go together and never can be found alone. Each brings the other with it, for it is the law of God they be not separate. [Peace and understanding] are cause and effect, each to the other, so where one is absent the other cannot be. Try to imagine what it would be like to be totally free of fear, feeling perfectly safe, with no need to make plans for protection. Imagine feeling indescribably joyful and overflowing with Love. Imagine seeing everyone joined with you in this joyful experience of the eternal flow of Love. This is God’s Will for us. It is the Home He created for us and gave to us, the extension of His Love, eternally.

As we let ourselves be taught the truth by the Holy Spirit in our minds, this will be our experience in every present moment. We don’t experience it now only because our belief in separation has hidden it from our awareness. Peace is our natural state. We are learning now that if this is not our experience, we need to undo the mistaken belief that makes the truth unknown to us.

We dedicate this day to offer all our thoughts to the Holy Spirit with open hands, willing to receive His Thoughts of Love in their place. Thus will He guide us to the peace of God that is ours now.

Bringing Healing to the World

I give the miracles I have received. …To give is how to recognize you have received. It is the proof that what you have is yours.

You understand that you are healed [released from fear] when you give healing. You accept forgiveness as accomplished in yourself when you forgive. You recognize your brother as yourself, and thus do you perceive that you are whole. There is no miracle [extension of Love] you cannot give, for all are given you. Receive them now by opening the storehouse of your mind where they are laid, and giving them away.

Christ’s vision is the bridge between the worlds. And in its power can you safely trust to carry you from this world into one made holy by forgiveness. Things which seem quite solid here are merely shadows there; transparent, faintly seen, at times forgot, and never able to obscure the light that shines beyond them. Holiness has been restored to vision, and the blind can see.

This is the Holy Spirit’s single gift; the treasure house to which you can appeal with perfect certainty for all the things that can contribute to your happiness. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 159, W-pI.159.1:7-2:5;5:1-6:1. See also ACIM Lesson 159 Insights.)

We know we have Love by extending Love. Love is one so we cannot extend Love to what we perceive as separate from us. By forgiving — letting go of the perception of separation — we make way for Love’s natural joining with the one Love that is everywhere, beyond forms of separation. As we let go of judgment (separation) and welcome Christ’s vision, our perception shifts to seeing Love’s innocence in place of the ego’s projections of guilt.

Today we open our minds to Christ’s healing vision by bringing all fear thoughts, anything that disturbs our peace, to the Holy Spirit. We welcome the Light He brings which reveals Christ’s vision. With this vision we see a healed world, where Love is recognized as all that is real. As we accept Christ’s vision, we are healed of fear and bring that healing to our brothers.

Learning What Forgiveness Means

How holy am I, who have been given the function of lighting up the world! Let me be still before my holiness. In its calm light let all my conflicts disappear. In its peace let me remember Who I am.

Some specific forms for applying this idea when special difficulties seem to arise might be:

Let me not obscure the light of the world in me.
Let the light of the world shine through this appearance.
This shadow will vanish before the light.

Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world. It is through accepting my function that I will see the light in me. And in this light will my function stand clear and perfectly unambiguous before my sight. My acceptance does not depend on my recognizing what my function is, for I do not yet understand forgiveness. Yet I will trust that, in the light, I will see it as it is.

Specific forms for using this idea might include:

Every moment is an opportunity to learn what forgiveness means. Our inner Teacher is always ready to show us the truth beyond appearances. We just have to be willing to offer our perceptions to Him and receive His loving correction. His Light will shine away the dark shadows of the ego thought system that keep the Light of Love from our awareness.

We can strengthen our willingness by reminding ourselves frequently that we want help to see past appearances. We want to understand what true forgiveness means. We want to see the innocence of Love instead of the guilt and fear the ego projects. As we learn the Holy Spirit’s lessons in forgiveness, we join with Him in being a messenger of Light and Love.

Our Unbreakable Link with God

God is my Source. I cannot see apart from Him. I can see what God wants me to see. [In Truth] I cannot see anything else. Beyond His Will lie only illusions. It is these [illusions] I choose when I think I can see apart from Him. It is these I choose when I try to see through the body’s eyes. Yet the vision of Christ has been given me to replace [illusions]. It is through this vision [of Christ] that I choose to see.

God is the light in which I see. I cannot see in darkness. God is the only light. Therefore, if I am to see, it must be through Him. I have tried to define what seeing is, and I have been wrong. Now it is given me to understand that God is the light in which I see. Let me welcome [Christ’s] vision and the happy world it will show me. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 59, W-pI.59.3-4. It is helpful to remember that what we seem to see with the body’s eyes is illusion. The body’s eyes cannot see reality because the body and all its parts are illusions. When the Course talks about vision, it is always referring to Christ’s vision, which is in our right mind. It is our right mind that thinks with God. It is our right mind that remains united with our Source. It is our right mind that thinks thoughts of Love and nothing else. As we open our minds to Christ’s vision in our right mind, we see with the Light of God.

The ego (wrong mind) denies the Light of God and so it seems to exist only in darkness, in the absence of God’s Light. The ego’s substitute for vision is illusions with which it populates its darkness. It is only our choice to believe in the ego mind of separation that causes it to dominate our awareness and hide the Light of God.

By the grace of God we are not left without a means to let go of the belief in darkness. The Holy Spirit was given us as an unbreakable link to God’s Light the moment we chose to believe in darkness. As we let the Holy Spirit guide our seeing moment by moment, we learn to recognize the ego’s illusions and let them go. We find our way Home to our Source.

We Have a Friend to Guide Us Home

There is no life outside of Heaven. Where God created life, there life must be. In any state apart from Heaven life is illusion.… Life not in Heaven is impossible, and what is not in Heaven is not anywhere. Outside of Heaven, only the conflict of illusion stands; senseless, impossible and beyond all reason, and yet perceived as an eternal barrier to Heaven. Illusions are but forms. Their content is never true.

Brother, take not one step in the descent to hell. For having taken one, you will not recognize the rest for what they are. And they will follow. Attack in any form has placed your foot upon the twisted stairway that leads from Heaven. Yet any instant it is possible to have all this undone. How can you know whether you chose the stairs to Heaven or the way to hell? Quite easily. How do you feel? Is peace in your awareness? Are you certain which way you go? And are you sure the goal of Heaven can be reached? If not, you walk alone. Ask, then, your Friend to join with you, and give you certainty of where you go. (A Course in Miracles, T-23.II.19;22. The ego believes it is alone and friendless. It can trust in itself alone. The ego never feels safe, for it is the belief in weakness. It feels alone because it is the belief in lovelessness. This is the hell the ego believes is its home. It tries to make forms to substitute for lack of Love and weakness. But they never satisfy because the forms are illusions and are empty.

All this can be undone by letting go of the belief that it is possible to be separate from the oneness of God’s Love. Knowing that we believe we are friendless, God has given us an eternal Friend. This Friend is ever present in our mind, offering Its strength, Its Love, Its peace and Its certainty. These are gifts given by our Creator which our Friend holds for us to be given us the moment they are welcome.

We welcome God’s gifts with our willingness to accept our Friend’s help. If we are not feeling at peace, it is a sign that we need to turn to our Friend for help. At our request, we receive His strength and His sure direction to lead us out of the mistaken belief that we have disconnected from our Creator. As we let go of the mistaken belief, we remember our Home in Heaven.

Living in God’s Peace

In peace I was created. And in peace do I remain. It is not given me to change my Self. How merciful is God my Father, that when He created me He gave me peace forever. Now I ask but to be what I am. And can this be denied me, when it is forever true?

Father, I seek the peace You gave as mine in my creation. What was given then must be here now, for my creation was apart from time, and still remains beyond all change. The peace in which Your Son was born into Your Mind is shining there unchanged. I am as You created me. I need but call on You to find the peace You gave. It is Your Will that gave it to Your Son. The peace of God is always with us. It is What we are. When we are not experiencing peace, we are believing in a false image of our self. Through forgiveness, we let go of false self-images that seem to make us separate, alone, vulnerable and guilty.

God gave us the Holy Spirit to guide us out of the maze of the ego thought system of separation. We can call upon Him in every instant. He is our constant Companion Whose purpose is to help us remember we are God’s Son, at one with our Creator. We are eternally safe in the peace of God.

Today we would walk with the Holy Spirit through every experience, letting Him guide us in the way of God’s perfect Love and peace.

How to Learn the Truth of What We Are

God goes with me wherever I go. How can I be alone when God always goes with me? How can I be doubtful and unsure of myself when perfect certainty abides in Him? How can I be disturbed by anything when He rests in me in absolute peace? How can I suffer when love and joy surround me through Him? Let me not cherish illusions about myself. I am perfect because God goes with me wherever I go.

God is my strength. Vision is His gift. Let me not look to my own eyes to see today. Let me be willing to exchange my pitiful illusion of seeing for the vision that is given by God. Christ’s vision is His gift, and He has given it to me. Let me call upon this gift today, so that this day may help me to understand eternity. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 59, W-pI.59.1-2. God is our constant Companion. There is nowhere that God is absent. His eternal Presence surrounds us with His joy and peace and Love. The perfection of the Self we are is guaranteed, for we are held in His sure protection. Nothing can change or harm What God created perfect.

The image the ego made of a weak and isolated self is a defense against the truth of What we are. While we identify with the ego-made self, we are unaware of the strength of God in us. The illusion of seeing with the body’s eyes cannot see the one Self we are.

But God has given us Christ’s vision in our mind which overlooks the ego-made images, seeing only the ever-present Love that is our Self. Today we dedicate to bringing the perceptions that disturb our peace to Christ’s vision to learn the truth of what we are.
