The Path to Invulnerability

Have you really considered how many opportunities you have had to gladden yourself, and how many of them you have refused? There is no limit to the power of a Son of God, but he can limit the expression of his power as much as he chooses. Your mind and mine can unite in shining your ego away, releasing the strength of God into everything you think and do. Do not settle for anything less than this, and refuse to accept anything but this as your goal. Watch your mind carefully for any beliefs that hinder its [releasing the strength of God into everything you think and do] accomplishment, and step away from [these beliefs]. Judge how well you have done this by your own feelings, for this is the one right use of judgment. Judgment, like any other defense, can be used to attack or protect; to hurt or to heal. The ego should be brought to judgment and found wanting there. Without your own allegiance, protection and love, the ego cannot exist. Let it be judged truly and you must [inevitably] withdraw allegiance, protection and love from [the ego].

You are a mirror of truth, in which God Himself shines in perfect light. To the ego’s dark glass you need but say, “I will not look there because I know these images are not true.” Then let the Holy One shine on you in peace, knowing that this and only this must be. His Mind shone on you in your creation and brought your mind into being. His Mind still shines on you and must shine through you. Your ego cannot prevent Him from shining on you, but it can prevent you from letting Him shine through you. (A Course in Miracles, T-4.IV.8-9. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The ego has no strength of its own. It depends entirely on our belief and allegiance to it for its seeming strength. Without our belief in it, the ego would simply cease to seem to be. We release ourselves to be the Love that created us by withdrawing our belief in the ego.

God has given us a Teacher in our mind Who will show us that the ego has no power, no substance. We need only be willing to offer our perceptions to the Holy Spirit with willingness to have them exchanged for the Holy Spirit’s vision. As we accept the Holy Spirit’s judgment of reality as our own, we accept God’s strength as ours. The ego’s seeming strength diminishes in the Light of God’s strength.

The daily, moment by moment practice of letting the Holy Spirit guide us in all things restores our awareness of the strength of God in us. We allow God’s Love to shine through us. It is the means to transition from the ego’s fear and vulnerability to our true Self’s Love and invulnerability in God.

Remembering We Are at Home in Love

I seek my own Identity, and find It in these words: “Love, which created me, is what I am.” Now need I seek no more. Love has prevailed. So still It waited for my coming home, that I will turn away no longer from the holy face of Christ. And what I look upon attests the truth of the Identity I sought to lose, but which my Father has kept safe for me.

Father, I seek the peace You gave as mine in my creation. What was given then must be here now, for my creation was apart from time, and still remains beyond all change. The peace in which Your Son was born into Your Mind is shining there unchanged. I am as You created me. I need but call on You to find the peace You gave. It is Your Will that gave it to Your Son. Our Identity is Love. Love is one and extends forever, without limit. God guarantees that the Self we are cannot be divided and cannot be limited.

Inherent in this changelessness is perfect peace. There is no change to be feared or defended against. Only the belief that we have changed ourselves by disconnecting from our Creator makes fear and change seem possible.

This belief makes illusions that seem to confirm that we are no longer the Love that God created us to be. Thankfully God did not allow this change to actually occur.

We can return to our original state as God created us by letting go of the false belief that we are separate. As we let go of that belief (forgive), we see the face of Christ. We see the innocence of Love reflected back to us, which reminds us of our true Identity as Love and nothing else. Forgiveness removes our self-made barriers to Love. And we remember we are at Home in Love.

Accepting Holy Spirit’s Vision of Innocence

Here is the answer! Would you stand outside while all of Heaven waits for you within? Forgive and be forgiven. As you give you will receive. There is no plan but this for the salvation of the Son of God.

Open your eyes today and look upon a happy world of safety and of peace. Forgiveness is the means by which [a happy world] comes to take the place of hell. In quietness it rises up to greet your open eyes, and fill your heart with deep tranquility as ancient truths, forever newly born, arise in your awareness. What you will remember then can never be described. Yet your forgiveness offers it to you.

Forgiveness offers everything I want.
Today I have accepted this as true.
Today I have received the gifts of God.

God’s Love is our Home. We already have all of His Love. Forgiveness clears the barriers we have made in our mind against the awareness of Love’s presence.

We give the gift of forgiveness by accepting Holy Spirit’s help to reinterpret our perceptions of guilt and fear. We cannot forgive while we believe our mistaken perceptions are true. Forgiveness is the Holy Spirit’s gift to us when we are willing to set aside our judgments; when we are willing to remember that we do not know what anything means.

We receive of the gift of a happy world when we accept Holy Spirit’s help. We receive this gift by joining with the Holy Spirit’s vision of innocence, seen in every brother.

Today We Accept the Holy Spirit’s Help

Everything God wills is not only possible, but has already happened. And that is why the past has gone. It never happened in reality. Only in your mind, which thought it did, is [the past’s] undoing needful.

Prepare you now for the undoing of what never was. If you already understood the difference between truth and illusion, the Atonement would have no meaning. The holy instant, the holy relationship, the Holy Spirit’s teaching, and all the means by which salvation is accomplished, would have no purpose. For they are all but aspects of the plan to change your dreams of fear to happy dreams, from which you waken easily to knowledge. Put yourself not in charge of this, for you cannot distinguish between advance and retreat. Some of your greatest advances you have judged as failures, and some of your deepest retreats you have evaluated as success.

Never approach the holy instant after you have tried to remove all fear and hatred from your mind. That is [the holy instant’s] function. Never attempt to overlook your guilt before you ask the Holy Spirit’s help. That is His function. Your part is only to offer Him a little willingness to let Him remove all fear and hatred, and to be forgiven. On your little faith, joined with His understanding, He will build your part in the Atonement and make sure that you fulfill it easily. And with Him, you will build a ladder planted in the solid rock of faith, and rising even to Heaven. Nor will you use it to ascend to Heaven alone. (A Course in Miracles, T-18.IV.8:4-7;V.1-2.. To move from the dream of fear and guilt to the happy dream requires only that we be willing to ask for and accept the Holy Spirit’s help. It is only this little willingness that is required of us. It is important that we not try to do more than this on our own. From our limited perception in the dream, we cannot know how to forgive. Forgiveness is the Holy Spirit’s function.

Our willingness to ask for His help opens our mind to the experience of forgiveness. Under His guidance we learn to see past our interpretations of appearances. We learn that there is only Love or a call for Love in every moment. The Holy Spirit will help us learn this. If there is a call for Love, He will guide us to respond with Love in the way that is most helpful for all concerned. The more we realize that we do not know what anything we perceive in the world means, the more willing we are to receive the Holy Spirit’s healing lessons that turn our dream of fear into a happy dream.

Today we welcome the Holy Spirit’s guidance in everything we do or think. Thus we become part of the Atonement that heals the world.

The Gift of True Forgiveness

Who is my brother but Your holy Son? And if I see him sinful I proclaim myself a sinner, not a Son of God; alone and friendless in a fearful world. Yet this perception is a choice I make, and can relinquish. I can also see my brother sinless, as Your holy Son. And with this choice I see my sinlessness, my everlasting Comforter and Friend beside me, and my way secure and clear. Choose, then, for me, my Father, through Your Voice. For He alone gives judgment in Your Name.

Forgiveness looks on sinlessness alone, and judges not. Through this I come to You. Judgment will bind my eyes and make me blind. Yet love, reflected in forgiveness here, reminds me You have given me a way to find Your peace again. I am redeemed when I elect to follow in this way. You have not left me comfortless. I have within me both the memory of You, and One Who leads me to it. Father, I would hear Your Voice and find Your peace today. For I would love my own Identity, and find in It the memory of You. Perception starts with what we believe we are. We project this belief on the world to make our beliefs seem true. Because our belief can change, our perception is changeable. With the help of God’s Voice, we can learn to let go of the mistaken belief that we are separate. As we accept the Love we are, we perceive a loving world.

The Love that our true Self is never changes. We bring this Love to the world through forgiveness, through letting go of the false belief in being separate. This is how we remove the barriers to Love’s presence. These barriers are nothing but false beliefs. As we let go of the false beliefs, Love shines forth everywhere. We find peace as we remember our true Self. Here we find the memory of our eternal unity with God. Forgiveness is a gift we give to ourselves and the world. Today we choose God’s Voice as our Guide in all our doing.

Allowing the Holy Instant

A holy relationship is a means of saving time. One instant spent together with your brother restores the universe to both of you. You are prepared. Now you need but to remember you need do nothing. It would be far more profitable now merely to concentrate on this than to consider what you should do. When peace comes at last…, it always comes with just one happy realization; “I need do nothing.”

Time has been saved for you because you and your brother are together. This [holy relationship] is the special means this course is using to save you time. …“I need do nothing” is a statement of allegiance, a truly undivided loyalty. Believe it for just one instant, and you will accomplish more than is given to a century of contemplation, or of struggle against temptation.

To do anything involves the body. And if you recognize you need do nothing, you have withdrawn the body’s value from your mind. Here is the quick and open door through which you slip past centuries of effort, and escape from time. This is the way in which sin loses all attraction right now. For here is time denied, and past and future gone. Who needs do nothing has no need for time. To do nothing is to rest, and make a place within you where the activity of the body ceases to demand attention. Into this place the Holy Spirit comes, and there abides. He will remain when you forget, and the body’s activities return to occupy your conscious mind.

This quiet center, in which you do nothing, will remain with you, giving you rest in the midst of every busy doing on which you are sent. For from this center will you be directed how to use the body sinlessly. It is this center, from which the body is absent, that will keep [the body sinless] in your awareness of it. The ego is high maintenance. To maintain the illusion that the body and the world is real requires constant attention on the past and the future and ignoring the present. It is this ego “doing” that needs to be let go to allow the present instant into our awareness.

This is why the Course talks about “undoing.” We need to undo our dedication to time and separation to make way for the recognition of our eternal unity with every brother as the one Son of God and our Creator. The awareness of this unity is at the center of our Being. It is our true Self, which has never lost Its connection with Love’s oneness.

The unity of Love is welcomed in the holy relationship. Here separation is no longer valued. In this holy instant of recognition we find the peace and joy of our true Self, united with our brothers.

The Antidote for Feelings of Inadequacy

Today we will try to reach past your own weakness to the Source of real strength.… Close your eyes and begin, as usual, by repeating the idea for the day [God is the strength in which I trust]. Then spend a minute or two in searching for situations in your life which you have invested with fear, dismissing each one by telling yourself:

God is the strength in which I trust.

Now try to slip past all concerns related to your own sense of inadequacy. It is obvious that any situation that causes you concern is associated with feelings of inadequacy, for otherwise you would believe that you could deal with the situation successfully. It is not by trusting yourself that you will gain confidence. But the strength of God in you is successful in all things.

The recognition of your own frailty is a necessary step in the correction of your errors…. You must also gain an awareness that confidence in your real strength is fully justified in every respect and in all circumstances.

There is a place in you where there is perfect peace. There is a place in you where nothing is impossible. There is a place in you where the strength of God abides. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 47, W-pI.47.4:1,3-5;5-6;7:4-6. See also ACIM Lesson 47 Insights.)

Anxiety, sadness, loneliness, guilt and fear are all sure signs that we are trusting in our own strength as an identity separate from God. This is because we are denying the strength of God in us. A sense of inadequacy is an inevitable consequence. Despite our denial, God’s strength is still in us because, in truth, it is impossible to break the eternal unity of God with all His Creation.

The antidote for our feelings of inadequacy begins with acknowledging our own frailty. The next step is to accept the Holy Spirit’s help to connect with the peace of God within. In that peace we will remember God’s strength. We will feel His comfort and certainty. We will remember that we are safe in His changeless Love. We will trust in the strength of God in us.
