Changing Our Mind to Accept the Truth

[“My mind is part of God’s. I am very holy.”] does not describe the way you see yourself now. It does, however, describe what vision will show you. It is difficult for anyone who thinks he is in this world to believe this of himself. Yet the reason he thinks he is in this world is because he does not believe it.

You will believe that you are part of where you think you are. That is because you surround yourself with the environment you want. And you want it to protect the image of yourself that you have made. The image is part of this environment. What you see while you believe you are in it is seen through the eyes of the image. This is not vision. Images cannot see.

The idea for today presents a very different view of yourself. By establishing your Source it establishes your Identity, and it describes you as you must really be in truth. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 35, W-pI.35.1:1-3:2. See also ACIM Lesson 35 Insights.)

It seems that we are capable of being irritated, angry, fearful, sad and lonely. Yet all these emotions cannot be experienced by what is holy. Holiness comes from being in the oneness of God’s holiness. The fact that our mind is part of Gods means that all these unloving emotions must not be in our holy mind. They do not belong to us because they come from the ego — the belief in a mind that is from God.

Whenever we experience unloving emotions, we are believing we are not what God created us to be. We are believing in a false image of what we are. Today’s affirmation offers us a practice that will help us change our mind from believing in a lie to accepting the truth that our true Self remains one with our Creator. Our true Self is Love and nothing else, just as our Creator is.

Whenever we experience an emotion that is not loving, we need to remind ourselves that this is a thought we do not want. And tell ourselves “My Mind is part of God’s. I am very holy.”

Accepting Love’s Vision

God sees no contradictions. Yet His Son believes he sees them. Thus he has a need for One Who can correct his erring sight, and give him vision that will lead him back to where perception ceases. God does not perceive at all. Yet it is He Who gives the means by which perception is made true and beautiful enough to let the light of Heaven shine upon it. It is He Who answers what His Son would contradict, and keeps his sinlessness forever safe.

These are the lessons God would have you learn. His Will reflects them all, and they reflect His loving kindness to the Son He loves. Each lesson has a central thought, the same in all of them. The form alone is changed, with different circumstances and events; with different characters and different themes, appar­ent but not real. They are the same in fundamental content. It is this:

Forgive, and you will see this differently. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 193, W-pI.193.2-3. See also ACIM Lesson 193 Insights.)

A Course in Miracles could be called a course in forgiveness. Perception is the central error that needs to be corrected. Perception always has a perceiver and something external that is perceived. But in the oneness of God, there is nothing external and therefore nothing to perceive. True forgiveness corrects the error of belief in being separate and distinct from what we see.

When we accept the Holy Spirit’s lesson in true perception, we see past the forms of the world to our unity in Love with All That is. This is the healing of our mind that brings us peace, for there is nothing we perceive that conflicts with our awareness of the Love we are. The Light of Love fills our mind and dispels all images because we accept God’s gift of all His Love.

Today let us accept the vision of Love that we may see the world differently.

The Lesson That Will Transform Our World

Love, which created me, is what I am.

I seek my own Identity, and find It in these words: “Love, which created me, is what I am.” Now need I seek no more. Love has prevailed. So still It waited for my coming home, that I will turn away no longer from the holy face of Christ. And what I look upon attests the truth of the Identity I sought to lose, but which my Father has kept safe for me.

Father, my thanks to You for what I am; for keeping my Identity untouched and sinless, in the midst of all the thoughts of sin my foolish mind made up. And thanks to You for saving me from them. Amen. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 229, W-pII.229. See also ACIM Lesson 229 Insights.)

We are innately loving because we were created by Love and remain united with our Creator. The experience of fear or guilt comes from a part of our mind that is dreaming that it has lost its connection with Love. It is dreaming of a loveless world. This loveless dream cannot be real because only Love is real.

The fact that Love created us assures us that we can awaken from the fearful dream. All we need do is learn to recognize what is true and what is just a dream. We have been given an inner Teacher Whose mission is to teach us this very lesson. We welcome this lesson today, for we want to remember Who we are. We want to awaken to our Home in eternal Love. We want to remember every brother is one with us in this Love. It is this remembrance that will bring joy and peace to the world.

Accepting Our Role as Pupil and Teacher

Certain pupils have been assigned to each of God’s teachers, and they will begin to look for him as soon as he has answered the Call. They were chosen for him because the form of the universal curriculum that he will teach is best for them in view of their level of understanding. His pupils have been waiting for him, for his coming is certain. Again, it is only a matter of time. Once he has chosen to fulfill his role, they are ready to fulfill theirs. Time waits on his choice, but not on whom he will serve. When he is ready to learn, the opportunities to teach will be provided for him.

Further, the plan for this correction was established and completed simultaneously, for the Will of God is entirely apart from time. So is all reality, being of Him. The instant the idea of separation entered the mind of God’s Son, in that same instant was God’s Answer given. (A Course in Miracles, M-2.1;2:4-6)

The world we perceive is a reflection of what we believe we are. Because of this, everyone we meet or even think of has the potential to be our pupil and teacher. We see them as a reflection of the self we believe we are. Do they appear as a loving friend to us? Then we are recognizing attributes of our true Self reflected. Do we judge what we see as separate from us, with conflicting interests? Then we are perceiving what we believe about ourselves. They are offering us an opportunity to forgive this misperception so we can see the true Self in them that is part of the one Self we share with everyone.

We have recognized a pupil God has brought to us for our healing. When we choose to accept the Holy Spirit’s true perception in place of our misperceptions, we are choosing to accept God’s Answer. We become His teacher because we have accepted His lesson.

Undoing Our Choice for Fear and Guilt

Since you believe that you are separate, Heaven presents itself to you as separate, too. Not that it is in truth, but that the link that has been given you to join the truth may reach to you through what you understand. Father and Son and Holy Spirit are as One, as all your brothers join as one in truth. Christ and His Father never have been separate, and Christ abides within your understanding, in the part of you that shares His Father’s Will. The Holy Spirit links the other part–the tiny, mad desire to be separate, different and special–to the Christ, to make the oneness clear to what is really one. In this world this is not understood, but can be taught.

The Holy Spirit serves Christ’s purpose in your mind, so that the aim of specialness can be corrected [in your mind] where the error lies. Because His purpose still is one with both the Father and the Son, He knows the Will of God and what you really will. But this is understood by mind perceived as one, aware that it is one, and so experienced. It is the Holy Spirit’s function to teach you how this oneness is experienced, what you must do that it can be experienced, and where you should go to do it. (A Course in Miracles, T-25.I.5-6. The part of our mind that dreams of separation, individuality, fear and guilt needs to be taught that the dream is not true. In the dream it is impossible to experience the oneness of God’s Love. When we chose to dream of separation, God gave us the Holy Spirit to help us undo this mistaken choice.

The Holy Spirit uses the images in our dream to teach us how to recognize what is true and what is false. He teaches us true perception which overlooks the images of the dream to the Love that is hidden behind them. Each time we accept His correction, our attachment to the dream softens. We are not so insistent that our perceptions must be true. We become progressively more willing to accept the true perception that forgiveness welcomes.

When forgiveness is complete, when true perception has replaced the ego’s false perceptions, we see a forgiven world. We have opened our heart and mind to accept God’s changeless, eternal Love. We awaken from the dream.

Training Our Mind to Accept God’s Peace

…we attempt, [today], to reach a quickened pace along a shorter path to the serenity and peace of God. We merely close our eyes, and then forget all that we thought we knew and understood. For thus is freedom given us from all we did not know and failed to understand.

Permit no idle thought [of separation] to go unchallenged. If you notice one, deny its hold and hasten to assure your mind that this is not what it would have. Then gently let the thought which you denied be given up, in sure and quick exchange for the idea we practice for the day.

When you are tempted, hasten to proclaim your freedom from temptation, as you say:

This thought I do not want. I choose instead _______.

We already have the peace of God. But we don’t know it because we have accepted the ego thought system of fear and guilt. We’ve taught ourselves that the ego’s lies are true. The Course offers us a loving and gentle journey to let go of the thoughts that hide God’s peace and Love from our awareness. This lesson is another step to help us train our minds to recognize the thoughts that interfere with peace and let them go.

Each time we release a fear thought by offering it to the Holy Spirit for His correction, we take another step forward in the healing of our mind. This step is taken in two parts. First we remind ourselves that we do not want the ego’s thought. Then we declare that we want the Holy Spirit’s correction instead. This practice leads us Home to the Heaven of God’s Love.

Accepting the Love that Unites Us All

Hear, holy Son of God, your Father speak. His Voice would give to you His holy Word, to spread across the world the tidings of salvation and the holy time of peace. We gather at the throne of God today, the quiet place within the mind where He abides forever, in the holiness that He created and will never leave.

He has not waited until you return your mind to Him to give His Word to you. He has not hid Himself from you, while you have wandered off a little while from Him. He does not cherish the illusions which you hold about yourself. He knows His Son, and wills that he remain as part of Him regardless of his dreams; regardless of his madness that his will is not his own.

Today He speaks to you. His Voice awaits your silence, for His Word can not be heard until your mind is quiet for a while, and meaningless desires have been stilled. Await His Word in quiet. There is peace within you to be called upon today, to help make ready your most holy mind to hear the Voice for its Creator speak. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 125, W-pI.125.4-6. God calls to us continuously to remind us that we are His Son, at one with Him and His Love. Our allegiance to the ego makes a static overlay that deafens us to His call. We quiet this static interference by going to the quiet peace within. With the static tuned out, we hear God’s call clearly telling us that He shares His Will with us. His peace and joy are given us without limit. This is the message we bring to the world from the peace within our mind.

Christ is within us all. Let us celebrate His Presence by seeing with Christ’s vision the Love that unites us in our Creator.
