A Practice That Will Return Us to Love

We ask for rest today, and quietness unshaken by the world’s appearances. ²We ask for peace and stillness, in the midst of all the turmoil born of clashing dreams. ³We ask for safety and for happiness, although we seem to look on danger and on sorrow.

“I rest in God.” ²This thought will bring to you the rest and quiet, peace and stillness, and the safety and the happiness you seek. ³“I rest in God.” ⁴This thought has power to wake the sleeping truth in you, whose vision sees beyond appearances to that same truth in everyone and everything there is.

In Him you have no cares and no concerns, no burdens, no anxiety, no pain, no fear of future and no past regrets. ²In timelessness you rest, while time goes by without its touch upon you, for your rest can never change in any way at all. We have been given a very simple practice that can transform our mind to awareness of a world beyond every dream. It is the real world God created one with Himself. This is where we have always been, no matter what dream we have dreamed.

“I rest in God.” The frequent reminder of this in our mind can help us step away from fear, guilt, sadness and a sense of loss. Whenever we feel anxious, we can affirm this in our mind as a way to bring us back to remembrance of our true Home. This affirmation of the truth cannot be repeated too often.

Each time we remind ourselves of this fact, we help our mind awaken to the awareness of the Life we live in God. It is a call to remember that we live in eternal unity with the Love of God. This is our natural state. We rest in God, where nothing can disturb our peace or disrupt the joy we share with Him.

Resting in Perfect Peace and Happiness

Perception is consistent. ²What you see reflects your thinking. ³And your thinking but reflects your choice of what you want to see. ⁴Your values are determiners of this, for what you value you must want to see, believing what you see is really there. ⁵No one can see a world his mind has not accorded value. ⁶And no one can fail to look upon what he believes he wants.

Fear has made everything you think you see. ²All separation, all distinctions, and the multitude of differences you believe make up the world. ³They are not there. ⁴Love’s enemy has made them up. ⁵Yet love can have no enemy, and so they have no cause, no being and no consequence. ⁶They can be valued, but remain unreal.

It is impossible to see two worlds which have no overlap of any kind. ²Seek for the one; the other disappears. ³But one remains. ⁴They are the range of choice beyond which your decision cannot go. ⁵The real and the unreal are all there are to choose between, and nothing more than these.

⁵It is impossible to see two worlds. ⁶Let me accept the strength God offers me and see no value in this world, that I may find my freedom and deliverance.

We all have the power of God in us. It is the power of Love, the only power. Love does not conquer fear; it simply dispels it. Love sees no cause for fear, because It sees only Itself in all things.

Today we choose Love as our Guide. It will show us the Love that is present everywhere, beneath the dream images we have made. With this Guide, we rest in perfect peace and happiness that cannot be disturbed.

Accepting the Gifts Our Brothers Offer

Dream softly of your sinless brother, who unites with you in holy innocence. ²And from this dream the Lord of Heaven will Himself awaken His beloved Son. ³Dream of your brother’s kindnesses instead of dwelling in your dreams on his mistakes. ⁴Select his thoughtfulness to dream about instead of counting up the hurts he gave. ⁵Forgive him his illusions, and give thanks to him for all the helpfulness he gave. ⁶And do not brush aside his many gifts because he is not perfect in your dreams. ⁷He represents his Father, Whom you see as offering both life and death to you.

Brother, He gives but life. ²Yet what you see as gifts your brother offers represent the gifts you dream your Father gives to you. ³Let all your brother’s gifts be seen in light of charity and kindness offered you. ⁴And let no pain disturb your dream of deep appreciation for his gifts to you. We can choose how we see our brother. Our choice depends on what we believe we are. If we follow the ego’s dictates, we will judge our brother as we judge ourselves. We will judge what his body does, how it looks, what it says and how it behaves.

The Course is teaching us to see our brother differently. If we can choose change our focus to recognize his kindness and his helpfulness, and forgive his illusions. With this choice, we do the same for ourselves. What we forgive in a brother, we forgive in ourselves. The gratitude that comes with forgiving our brother brings us happiness and peace.

Today is a great day for us to focus on what we are grateful for in our brother and experience the happiness that gratitude brings.

Remembering the Life We Live in God

Death is a thought that takes on many forms, often unrecognized. ²It may appear as sadness, fear, anxiety or doubt; as anger, faithlessness and lack of trust; concern for bodies, envy, and all forms in which the wish to be as you are not may come to tempt you. ³All such thoughts are but reflections of the worshipping of death as savior and as giver of release.

⁵There is no death, and we renounce it now in every form, for their salvation and our own as well. ⁶God made not death. ⁷Whatever form it takes must therefore be illusion. ⁸This the stand we take today. ⁹And it is given us to look past death, and see the life beyond.

Our Father, bless our eyes today. ²We are Your messengers, and we would look upon the glorious reflection of Your Love which shines in everything. ³We live and move in You alone. ⁴We are not separate from Your eternal life. ⁵There is no death, for death is not Your Will. ⁶And we abide where You have placed us, in the life we share with You and with all living things, to be like You and part of You forever. ⁷We accept Your Thoughts as ours, and our will is one with Yours eternally. ⁸Amen. It is important to realize how much the thought of death pervades our “life” experience in this world. These thoughts generally are focused on the body, the central figure in the ego’s dream of separation. In the ego’s denial of God’s Love, it denies the Source of Life.

The Course is helping us learn that the body is not real and the thought of death has no real basis. Today we accept the prayer in this lesson. It is expressing our willingness to see with the eyes of Christ. With His vision, we forgive our mistaken wishes for separation and see the unity of Love that keeps us forever safe in God’s eternal Life. As we accept this fact, we relax in the certainty of God’s Love.

Exchanging Guilt for Love’s Oneness

³Delay does not matter in eternity, but it is tragic in time. ⁴You have elected to be in time rather than eternity, and therefore believe you are in time. ⁵Yet your election is both free and alterable. ⁶You do not belong in time. ⁷Your place is only in eternity, where God Himself placed you forever.

Guilt feelings are the preservers of time. ²They induce fears of retaliation or abandonment, and thus ensure that the future will be like the past. ³This is the ego’s continuity. ⁴It gives the ego a false sense of security by believing that you cannot escape from it. ⁵But you can and must. ⁶God offers you the continuity of eternity in exchange. ⁷When you choose to make this exchange, you will simultaneously exchange guilt for joy, viciousness for love, and pain for peace. ⁸My role is only to unchain your will and set it free. ⁹Your ego cannot accept this freedom, and will oppose it at every possible moment and in every possible way. ¹⁰And as [the ego’s] maker, you recognize what it can do because you gave it the power to do it.

Remember the Kingdom always, and remember that you who are part of the Kingdom cannot be lost. ²The Mind that was in me is in you, for God creates with perfect fairness. ³Let the Holy Spirit remind you always of His fairness, and let me teach you how to share it with your brothers.” (A Course in Miracles, T-5.VI.1:3–3:3. The idea of sin is the ego’s belief that separation is irreversible. Were this true, forgiveness would be impossible and guilt inevitable. By the grace of God, only Love is real. Separation never occurred in truth. This is the basis for all forgiveness. Nothing has happened to change God’s one Son. We need only let go of the mistaken beliefs in separation.

Guilt is always based upon something that occurred in the past. Thus guilt keeps the idea of time in place. In the present moment, the changeless reality of Love’s oneness is recognized as all that is real. When we accept the help of the Holy Spirit, He heals our guilty thoughts and shows us that harm is impossible.

Today we offer all our perceptions to Him for His loving correction. For we would replace fear with Love and awaken to our Home in the heart of God.

Offering Our Perceptions to the Holy Spirit

How does one overcome illusions? ²Surely not by force or anger, nor by opposing them in any way. ³Merely by letting reason tell you that they contradict reality. ⁴They go against what must be true. ⁵The opposition comes from them, and not reality. ⁶Reality opposes nothing. ⁷What merely is needs no defense, and offers none. ⁸Only illusions need defense because of weakness. ⁹And how can it be difficult to walk the way of truth when only weakness interferes? ¹⁰You are the strong one in this seeming conflict. ¹¹And you need no defense. ¹²Everything that needs defense you do not want, for anything that needs defense will weaken you.

⁴In truth you and your brother stand together, with nothing in between. ⁵God holds your hands, and what can separate whom He has joined as one with Him? ⁶It is your Father Whom you would defend against. ⁷Yet it remains impossible to keep love out. ⁸God rests with you in quiet, undefended and wholly undefending, for in this quiet state alone is strength and power. ⁹Here can no weakness enter, for here is no attack and therefore no illusions. ¹⁰Love rests in certainty. ¹¹Only uncertainty can be defensive. ¹²And all uncertainty is doubt about yourself. The ego sees itself asl alone, against the world. This is a necessary perspective in order to maintain a sense of specialness. From this perspective, it must constantly defend against what it perceives as external to it.

Our true Self sees Itself as one with all that is real. It perceives no differences. Thus it has nothing that needs to be protected. Knowing Itself as one with everything, Its joy comes with extending Love.

This is the world the Holy Spirit guides us to remember. It does not defend against the ego. The Holy Spirit teaches us, very simply, that the ego is nothing and nowhere. As we learn this important lesson, we remember the peace in which we live.

To welcome this state of mind, we turn over all our perceptions to the Holy Spirit. We are willing to accept His loving correction. We will learn that we share the power of God’s Love. Nothing in truth can disturb our peace.

Deciding for Joy with the Holy Spirit

Before you make any decisions for yourself, remember that you have decided against your function in Heaven, and then consider carefully whether you want to make decisions here. ²Your function here is only to decide against deciding what you want, in recognition that you do not know. ³How, then, can you decide what you should do? ⁴Leave all decisions to the One Who speaks for God, and for your function as He knows it. ⁵So will He teach you to remove the awful burden you have laid upon yourself by loving not the Son of God, and trying to teach him guilt instead of love. ⁶Give up this frantic and insane attempt that cheats you of the joy of living with your God and Father, and of waking gladly to His Love and Holiness that join together as the truth in you, making you one with Him.

When you have learned how to decide with God, all decisions become as easy and as right as breathing. ²There is no effort, and you will be led as gently as if you were being carried down a quiet path in summer. ³Only your own volition seems to make deciding hard. ⁴The Holy Spirit will not delay in answering your every question what to do. ⁵He knows. ⁶And He will tell you, and then do it for you. ⁷You who are tired will find this is more restful than sleep. ⁸For you can bring your guilt into sleeping, but not into this. Today is a day to practice asking of everything, “What is this for?” This is a question to be directed to the Teacher within. For most of us, our typical habit is to ask this question of the ego. But it is the ego that has gotten us into this dream of fear and guilt. It is not our friend. As we learn to step back from the ego’s advice and connect with the peace of God within, our best Friend is there to guide us truly in the way of Love.

As we make it a habit to let this Guide decide everything for us, we will find a joy beyond anything this world offers. We will find freedom from guilt and experience peace as we awaken to the Love that unites us with our Creator and every brother.
