Remembering the Quiet Place Within

Peace to my mind. Let all my thoughts be still.

Father, I come to You today to seek the peace that You alone can give. I come in silence. In the quiet of my heart, the deep recesses of my mind, I wait and listen for Your Voice. My Father, speak to me today. I come to hear Your Voice in silence and in certainty and love, sure You will hear my call and answer me.

Now do we wait in quiet. God is here, because we wait together. I am sure that He will speak to you, and you will hear. Accept my confidence, for it is yours. Our minds are joined. We wait with one intent; to hear our Father’s answer to our call, to let our thoughts be still and find His peace, to hear Him speak to us of what we are, and to reveal Himself unto His Son. The Course emphasizes the importance of going to the quiet place within. The chaos of the ego’s world interferes with the Voice of God, which is constantly calling us Home to Love.

In the Manual for Teachers it tells us to start the day with God. God is not found in the chaos of the world, but in the quiet of our mind, where the busyness of the day is set aside and the peace of God’s Love fills our mind. Here His Voice speaks to us of God’s Love. It teaches us that we are united with Him in this Love and reminds us that every brother is joined with us in Love’s oneness. From this place of safety, happiness and peace, we return to the world refreshed, strengthened and with clearer vision to see the truth beyond the forms of the world.

We keep in touch with this peaceful place throughout the day by pausing frequently to step back for a moment and reconnect with the peace within. We open our mind to inspiration. This practice makes every day a happier day, a more peaceful day, and leads us forward on our journey of awakening. Let us join in this practice today.

God’s Plan to Release Us from All Guilt

…ask the Holy Spirit everything, and leave all decisions to His gentle counsel.

The One Who knows the plan of God that God would have you follow can teach you what it is. Only His wisdom is capable of guiding you to follow it. …The Holy Spirit knows that all salvation is escape from guilt.

Let Him, therefore, be the only Guide that you would follow to salvation. He knows the way, and leads you gladly on it.

Never forget the Love of God, Who has remembered you.

Whenever you are in doubt what you should do, think of His Presence in you, and tell yourself this, and only this:

He leadeth me and knows the way, which I know not.
Yet He will never keep from me what He would have me learn.
And so I trust Him to communicate to me all that He knows for me.

Then let Him teach you quietly how to perceive your guiltlessness, which is already there.” (A Course in Miracles, T-14.III.12:6;13:1-2,4;14:1-2;15:7;19. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

God never stops giving His Love to us. But we have to accept His Love and share It to know we have It.

When we accept the ego’s denial of God’s Love, we no longer are aware that we have it. Denying what we know is really true makes us feel guilty. The ego’s plan to deal with this guilt is to project it or to hide it in our unconscious mind. This keeps the guilt in our mind rather than releasing us from guilt. God’s plan frees us from all guilt by showing us that it is impossible to harm Him or His Son.

Today we practice giving all decisions about what to do to the Holy Spirit to decide on our behalf. He will teach us of the innocence we share in the oneness of God’s Love.

Learning to Teach Only Love

…to teach is to learn, so that teacher and learner are the same. [The Course] also emphasizes that teaching is a constant process; it goes on every moment of the day, and continues into sleeping thoughts as well.

To teach is to demonstrate. There are only two thought systems, and you demonstrate that you believe one or the other is true all the time. From your demonstration others learn, and so do you.

Teaching but reinforces what you believe about yourself. Its fundamental purpose is to diminish self-doubt. This does not mean that the self you are trying to protect is real. But it does mean that the self you think is real is what you teach. (A Course in Miracles, M-in.1:5-2:3;3:7-9)

When we react to a brother as though he is a body, we teach and learn that bodies and separation are real. This keeps us bound to the guilt and fear of the ego’s world of separation.

If we want to experience the Love, peace and happiness God has already given us, we need to change what we teach and learn. To do this we need to diligently and consistently choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide in all that we think and do. He will always guide us to act and think with Love. His vision shows us the loving Self that perception of the body hides. His Thoughts always reflect God’s Thought of Love.

The Holy Spirit recognizes our thoughts of defense and attack as calls for Love and answers these calls with forgiveness and Love. True forgiveness welcomes the vision of the Love we are. As we let the Holy Spirit be our Guide, we teach Love and learn that we are Love and nothing else.

God’s Guarantee of Peace and Happiness

You who believed that God’s Last Judgment would condemn the world to hell along with you, accept this holy truth: God’s Judgment is the gift of the Correction He bestowed on all your errors, freeing you from them, and all effects they ever seemed to have. To fear God’s saving grace is but to fear complete release from suffering, return to peace, security and happiness, and union with your own Identity.

Be not afraid of love. For it alone can heal all sorrow, wipe away all tears, and gently waken from his dream of pain the Son whom God acknowledges as His.

This is God’s Final Judgment: “You are still My holy Son, for­ever innocent, forever loving and forever loved, as limitless asyour Creator, and completely changeless and forever pure. Therefore awaken and return to Me. I am your Father and you are My Son.”” (A Course in Miracles Workbook: What is the Last Judgment, W-pII.10.3;4:2-3;5. See also ACIM Lesson 3111 Insights.)

The key message of A Course in Miracles, stated in the Introduction, is that only Love is real. It has no opposite. The rest of the Course is dedicated to help us undo our fear of Love and accept that Love is our Identity, united eternally with our Creator.

The ego is afraid of Love because separation cannot exist within the oneness of Love. Its thought system of separation has built myriad forms to make separation appear real. And we have taught ourselves to believe that this world of form is all that exists. This belief blinds us to the eternal presence of changeless Love.

But this blindness has no effect on the Love we are. It only makes us unaware of It. Meanwhile God knows that we remain united with Him in Love. This is His first and final judgment. The fact that God has not changed His Mind about His Creation guarantees that we are safe in His Love. His Voice is in our mind, calling us to return to Him. This Voice is available to us in every moment to teach us the true perception that recognizes the innocence of Love beyond the appearance of forms.

Today we choose to listen to His Voice, for we would awaken the safety, peace and happiness that is our natural Home.

Letting Love Lead Our Way

I will step back and let Him lead the way.

There is a way of living in the world that is not here, although it seems to be. You do not change appearance, though you smile more frequently. Your forehead is serene; your eyes are quiet. And the ones who walk the world as you do recognize their own. Yet those who have not yet perceived the way will recognize you also, and believe that you are like them, as you were before.

They cannot learn directly from the truth, because they have denied that it is so. And so they need a Teacher Who perceives their madness, but Who still can look beyond illusion to the simple truth in them.

…there is [a] road that leads away from loss of every kind, for sacrifice and deprivation both are quickly left behind. This is the way appointed for you now. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 155, W-pI.155.1;3:3:3-4;5:1-2. See also ACIM Lesson 155 Insights.)

The Course is telling us what we will experience when we follow the lead of the Holy Spirit instead of the ego. It is not hard to follow the Holy Spirit’s lead because He is ever present in our mind. Only our unwillingness to let go of what we value in the world makes it seem difficult.

Much of the Course teaches us that what we value in the world are empty images with no lasting value. Only our belief that we want these images makes them seem valuable. But as we follow our inner Teacher, we learn these images have no value whatsoever. When we recognize they are valueless, we freely let them go.

Then we are willing to accept God’s gifts that have been ours all along. The world we experience is peaceful, loving and happy. We no longer need to protect the false images we have valued. We know we are safe. We increasingly recognize that every brother is a true friend, for we are joined in Love’s oneness. We teach our brothers the way to live in Love by our practice of letting Love lead the way.

Choosing the Guide to Perfect Love

I merely follow, for I would not lead.

Father, You are the One Who gave the plan for my salvation to me. You have set the way I am to go, the role to take, and every step in my appointed path. I cannot lose the way. I can but choose to wander off a while, and then return. Your loving Voice will always call me back, and guide my feet aright. My brothers all can follow in the way I lead them. Yet I merely follow in the way to You, as You direct me and would have me go.

So let us follow One Who knows the way. We need not tarry, and we cannot stray except an instant from His loving Hand. We walk together, for we follow Him. And it is He Who makes the ending sure, and guarantees a safe returning home. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 324, W-pII.324. See also ACIM Lesson 324 Insights.)

The Holy Spirit leads us on the path to happiness and peace. The ego leads us to chaos, conflict, fear and guilt. It seems that the choice for which leader to follow is obvious. Why would we choose to follow the lead of the ego and suffer its consequences? The ego came out of the wish for specialness, to have something no one else has. The Holy Spirit cannot lead us to this because He leads to God, Who gives all of His Love to everyone equally. There is nothing else to give.

With the ego as our leader, we have taught ourselves that we can have our own special status. But this “status” is built on believing empty, illusionary forms are real. It seems that we can be special, somehow different from anyone else. But this brings guilt with it. The ego’s domain is a world of give and take. We take from others in order to have more for ourselves, either by a bargain in which we give something of lesser value or an outright attack in which we forcibly take what we want. These transactions inevitably bring guilt with them.

When we choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide, we are led on a path that frees us from guilt and restores us to the Love that is our Home. In this Love we find peace and happiness without limit. Today we choose to follow the Holy Spirit’s lead. We would not try to lead ourselves alone.

Love Guides Us to Reclaim Our Inheritance

In peace I was created. And in peace do I remain. It is not given me to change my Self. How merciful is God my Father, that when He created me He gave me peace forever. Now I ask but to be what I am. And can this be denied me, when it is forever true?

Father, I seek the peace You gave as mine in my creation. What was given then must be here now, for my creation was apart from time, and still remains beyond all change. The peace in which Your Son was born into Your Mind is shining there unchanged. I am as You created me. I need but call on You to find the peace You gave. It is Your Will that gave it to Your Son. Peace is our birthright. If we are not experiencing deep peace and happiness, we are denying our inheritance. In its place we have accepted the insane belief that it is possible to be separate and alone. We want this to be true because if it were, it would be possible to have special things that we could call our own to make us unique. We want to have a domain we can call our own because we think this domain will give us what we want. But this treasured domain comes with a price — lack of peace.

In a world where differences appear real, the things we value can be changed. It is an unstable world where certainty is impossible and happiness is fleeting at best. This is what we choose when we deny our inheritance by believing we are separate from our Source. We reclaim our inheritance by choosing to accept God’s gift of Love. His Will for us is perfect happiness and Love without end.

Today we practice choosing His Love by letting Love guide all our perceptions. Love will show us our unity with every brother. Whenever an attack is perceived, Love recognizes it as a call for Love and answers with kindness and gentleness.
