Choosing to Follow the Guide to Heaven

You are my goal, my Father. Only You.

Where would I go but Heaven? What could be a substitute for happiness? What gift could I prefer before the peace of God? What treasure would I seek and find and keep that can compare with my Identity? And would I rather live with fear than love?

You are my goal, my Father. What but You could I desire to have? What way but that which leads to You could I desire to walk? And what except the memory of You could signify to me the end of dreams and futile substitutions for the truth? You are my only goal. Your Son would be as You created him. What way but this could I expect to recognize my Self, and be at one with my Identity? (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 287, W-pII.287. See also ACIM Lesson 287 Insights.)

The ego is the choice to turn its back on our Father and make up a dream with substitutes that seem to meet our needs, sometimes make us happy but always carry an underlying sense of guilt for denying our Creator. The ego’s path is ever changing and chaotic, unreliable and never offers lasting peace or happiness.

Though we have accepted the ego’s goal, our true Self remembers that our true Home is Heaven. The Holy Spirit calls to us on behalf of our true Self to turn around and walk the path that leads us Home. This is the path to eternal peace and incomparable joy. This is all we truly want.

The ego would lead us on myriad journeys seeking to find what only God has given. But the ego’s direction never succeeds to find what our heart desires.

Today we choose Love as our only goal. We want to see the oneness of Love that joins us with our brothers. We want to feel the joy that comes with giving and receiving Love. We want to experience the peace that comes with dwelling in the changeless Love of Heaven. We choose to follow the Guide Whose purpose is to lead us there.
