The Choice to Be Happy

I give my life to God to guide today.

Father, I give You all my thoughts today. ²I would have none of mine. ³In place of them, give me Your Own. ⁴I give You all my acts as well, that I may do Your Will instead of seeking goals which cannot be obtained, and wasting time in vain imaginings. ⁵Today I come to You. ⁶I will step back and merely follow You. ⁷Be You the Guide, and I the follower who questions not the wisdom of the Infinite, nor Love whose tenderness I cannot comprehend, but which is yet Your perfect gift to me.

Today we have one Guide to lead us on. ²And as we walk together, we will give this day to Him with no reserve at all. ³This is His day. ⁴And so it is a day of countless gifts and mercies unto us. (A Course in Miracles, W-233. See also ACIM Lesson 233 Insights.)

The ego can never satisfy our deepest desire. Beneath the belief that we want specialness is the desire of our true Self to remember our eternal unity in the oneness of God’s Love.

Only by extending God’s Love will we be truly happy. We accept our place as extensions of God’s Love by relinquishing our attempts to control Reality. The choice to let Him guide our thoughts and actions is the choice for happiness.

Today we turn over control to Him, remembering that God’s only desire is for His Son’s perfect happiness. We choose to follow His lead today.

The Blessing of True Forgiveness

³Forgiveness through the Holy Spirit lies simply in looking beyond error from the beginning, and thus keeping it unreal for you. ⁴Do not let any belief in its realness enter your mind, or you will also believe that you must undo what you have made in order to be forgiven. ⁵What has no effect does not exist, and to the Holy Spirit the effects of error are nonexistent. ⁶By steadily and consistently cancelling out all its effects, everywhere and in all respects, He teaches that the ego does not exist and proves it.

Follow the Holy Spirit’s teaching in forgiveness, then, because forgiveness is His function and He knows how to fulfill it perfectly. …³Miracles are merely the sign of your willingness to follow the Holy Spirit’s plan of salvation, recognizing that you do not understand what it is. ⁴His work is not your function, and unless you accept this you cannot learn what your function is.

Behold, my child, reality is here. ²It belongs to you and me and God, and is perfectly satisfying to all of Us. ³Only this awareness heals, because it is the awareness of truth. (A Course in Miracles, T-9.IV.5:3–6;6:1,3-4;12. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The ego is just a fantasy of specialness that can never be real. But our belief in this fantasy makes it seem real to us. Fantasies are unstable because they change when beliefs change. If we believe our identity depends on a fantasy, we will defend it at all costs for if the fantasy is recognized as unreal, we believe we lose our identity.

This is why we must rely on the Holy Spirit as our Guide to forgiveness. He recognizes our mistaken beliefs but does not accept them as true. If we are willing to bring our beliefs to Him for His correction, we will find our release from the limited fantasy. We will be able to overlook the fantasy with His help.

What we will see with His vision is the radiant Light of Love in which we dwell. We will see it in every brother and ourselves. We will know our true Identity as God’s extension of Love. This is the blessing true forgiveness brings.

Forgiveness Lets Our Light Shine

The light of the world brings peace to every mind through my forgiveness.

How holy are you who have the power to bring peace to every mind! ²How blessed are you who can learn to recognize the means for letting this be done through you! ³What purpose could you have that would bring you greater happiness?

You are indeed the light of the world with such a function. ²The Son of God looks to you for his redemption. ³It is yours to give him, for it belongs to you. ⁴Accept no trivial purpose or meaningless desire in its place, or you will forget your function and leave the Son of God in hell. ⁵This is no idle request that is being asked of you. ⁶You are being asked to accept salvation that it may be yours to give.

Forgiveness is the means to let our Light shine. The Light of Love is what we are, given us by our Creator to be forever united with Him.

But when we identify with the ego, our choice for specialness hides the Light behind veils of illusion. Because the Light we are is one with All in All, we block Its radiance with our belief in being separate. When we forgive our wish to be separate, we clear away the dark veil. The Light of Love we are shines forth to bring salvation to the world.

Accepting the Treasures Offered Us Today

…[God] wills the happiness His Son inherited of Him be undisturbed; eternal and forever gaining scope, eternally expanding in the joy of full creation, and eternally open and wholly limitless in Him.

⁴God does not perceive at all. ⁵Yet it is He Who gives the means by which perception is made true and beautiful enough to let the light of Heaven shine upon it.

These are the lessons God would have you learn. …⁵They are the same in fundamental content. ⁶It is this:

⁷Forgive, and you will see this differently.

Certain it is that all distress does not appear to be but unforgiveness. ²Yet that is the content underneath the form.

This is the lesson God would have you learn: There is a way to look on everything that lets it be to you another step to Him, and to salvation of the world. ²To all that speaks of terror, answer thus:

³I will forgive, and this will disappear.

⁴To every apprehension, every care and every form of suffering, repeat these selfsame words. ⁵And then you hold the key that opens Heaven’s gate, and brings the Love of God the Father down to earth at last, to raise it up to Heaven. Forgiveness is the way we change our mind about the world. Each time we forgive a mistaken belief, our experience of the world changes. Stress diminishes. We experience less depression and more happiness. More and more we recognize the gifts of opportunities to heal our brothers offer us every day. We are on a path of return to awareness that we are Love and nothing else; created by Love and forever united with It.

Today we will be offered many gifts. Will we recognize them? If we choose to let the Holy Spirit guide our vision, we will accept many treasures today that lead us Home.

When Forgiveness Becomes Automatic

Let us consider what you do believe, in place of [“All that I give is given to myself.”] ²It seems to you that other people are apart from you, and able to behave in ways which have no bearing on your thoughts, nor yours on theirs. ³Therefore, your attitudes have no effect on them, and their appeals for help are not in any way related to your own. ⁴You further think that they can sin without affecting your perception of yourself, while you can judge their sin, and yet remain apart from condemnation and at peace.

…true forgiveness, as the means by which [salvation] is attained, must heal the mind that gives, for giving is receiving.

Today we try to understand the truth that giver and receiver are the same.

In silence, close your eyes upon the world that does not understand forgiveness, and seek sanctuary in the quiet place where thoughts are changed and false beliefs laid by. ²Repeat today’s idea, and ask for help in understanding what it really means. ³Be willing to be taught. ⁴Be glad to hear the Voice of truth and healing speak to you, and you will understand the words He speaks, and recognize He speaks your words to you.

…tell yourself:

³All that I give is given to myself. ⁴The Help I need to learn that this is true is with me now. ⁵And I will trust in Him.

⁶Then spend a quiet moment, opening your mind to His correction and His Love. ⁷And what you hear of Him you will believe, for what He gives will be received by you. (A Course in Miracles, W-126.2;7:5;8:1;10;11:2-7. See also ACIM Lesson 126 Insights.)

Projection is the primary tool the ego uses to make its illusions seem real and disconnected from our own mind. It seems to make a world outside over which we have no control nor responsibility. Were this true, we would be forever locked into the ego’s dream.

But we have Help in our mind to show us that projections are not only illusions but come from our own mind. This is the key to forgiveness. We can change our minds. But we need help from outside the ego’s closed thought system to recognize illusions for what they are.

The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to us. His mission is to teach us to distinguish the real from the unreal, truth from illusions. As we learn the Holy Spirit’s lessons, illusions are recognized for what they are — nothing and nowhere. With this recognition, forgiveness is automatic. No one treasures what they recognize as nothing. The ego’s projections dissolve revealing the Light of Love in which we live.

Removing the Barriers to Love’s Oneness

It is your forgiveness that will bring the world of darkness to the light. ²It is your forgiveness that lets you recognize the light in which you see. ³Forgiveness is the demonstration that you are the light of the world. ⁴Through your forgiveness does the truth about yourself return to your memory. ⁵Therefore, in your forgiveness lies your salvation.

Illusions about yourself and the world are one. ²That is why all forgiveness is a gift to yourself. ³Your goal is to find out who you are, having denied your Identity by attacking creation and its Creator. ⁴Now you are learning how to remember the truth. ⁵For this attack must be replaced by forgiveness, so that thoughts of life may replace thoughts of death.

Remember that in every attack you call upon your own weakness, while each time you forgive you call upon the strength of Christ in you. ²Do you not then begin to understand what forgiveness will do for you? ³It will remove all sense of weakness, strain and fatigue from your mind. ⁴It will take away all fear and guilt and pain. ⁵It will restore the invulnerability and power God gave His Son to your awareness.

²Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.

The basis for all forgiveness is the recognition that nothing in the world is real. Only Love is real; It has no form. Thus all our perceptions of forms are illusions stemming from the wish for specialness — being different in some way.

Perceiving forms depends upon perceiving differences which stand as a barrier against the recognition of Love’s oneness. This is why forgiveness is our function as the Light of the world. When we forgive our wish for differences, which are an attack on the oneness of Love, the Light of Love shines forth.

Today we choose to accept Holy Spirit’s help to let go of our wish for specialness, for separation from Love’s oneness. We want to remember the Love we are. We want to be happy. Forgiveness is the key to everything we truly want.

When Forgiveness Is Natural

…pardon is not asked for what is true. ²It must be limited to what is false. ³[Forgiveness] is irrelevant to everything except illusions. ⁴Truth is God’s creation, and to pardon that is meaningless. ⁵All truth belongs to Him, reflects His laws and radiates His Love. ⁶Does this need pardon? ⁷How can you forgive the sinless and eternally benign?

The major difficulty that you find in genuine forgiveness on your part is that you still believe you must forgive the truth, and not illusions.

It is sin’s unreality that makes forgiveness natural and wholly sane, a deep relief to those who offer it; a quiet blessing where it is received. ²It does not countenance illusions, but collects them lightly, with a little laugh, and gently lays them at the feet of truth. ³And there they disappear entirely.

Forgiveness is the only thing that stands for truth in the illusions of the world. ²It sees their nothingness, and looks straight through the thousand forms in which they may appear. ³It looks on lies, but it is not deceived.

The strength of pardon is its honesty, which is so uncorrupted that it sees illusions as illusions, not as truth. ²It is because of this that it becomes the undeceiver in the face of lies; the great restorer of the simple truth. ³By its ability to overlook what is not there, it opens up the way to truth, which has been blocked by dreams of guilt. The ego is not going to give up its territory without a fight. It accurately perceives itself as powerless, but puffs itself up with bluster to hide its weakness. It actually fights itself with images it believes are separate and different. It is a meaningless battle that does nothing except to occupy a mind that mistakenly believes illusions are true. This is its only defense to maintain illusions.

The antidote to the ego’s chaos is learning to recognize illusions for what they are — nothing and nowhere. The ego will never reveal this fact. But the Holy Spirit in our mind is ever-ready to help us learn to distinguish illusions from truth.

When we learn the Holy Spirit’s lessons in truth, forgiveness is natural. It simply dismisses what has been recognized as nothing and meaningless. Now the Light of Love that surrounds us and keeps us united with our Creator shines brightly. Forgiveness is natural to those who see the truth as it is.
