Forgiving the Wish for Specialness

Forgiveness is the only gift I give.

Forgiveness is the only gift I give, because it is the only gift I want. ²And everything I give I give myself. ³This is salvation’s simple formula. ⁴And I, who would be saved, would make it mine, to be the way I live within a world that needs salvation, and that will be saved as I accept Atonement for myself.

Father, how certain are Your ways; how sure their final outcome, and how faithfully is every step in my salvation set already, and accomplished by Your grace. ²Thanks be to You for Your eternal gifts, and thanks to You for my Identity. What is it that seems to need forgiveness? What affront or seeming harm are we defending against? It is always something that seems to “damage” our identity. But this identity is a false construct of the ego, made to set us apart from the world.

But our true Self is one with the world of Love. It is only our wish to be set apart, to be special, that needs to be forgiven. All the perceptions of attack, the affronts to our identity, stem from this one wish. As we forgive each seeming circumstance or situation, we are forgiving the wish for specialness.

Each forgiving thought opens the door wider to welcome the blessing of Love’s oneness. This is true, whether we forgive what appears to be someone else or forgive ourselves for something we thought we did. Forgiveness is the same. It lets go of the wish to be different and special. It welcomes the Love of God, which is our true Identity.

Remembering Our Unity in God’s Love

Let me remember that my goal is God.

All that is needful is to train our minds to overlook all little senseless aims, and to remember that our goal is God. ²His memory is hidden in our minds, obscured but by our pointless little goals which offer nothing, and do not exist. ³Shall we continue to allow God’s grace to shine in unawareness, while the toys and trinkets of the world are sought instead? ⁴God is our only goal, our only Love. ⁵We have no aim but to remember Him.

Our goal is but to follow in the way that leads to You. ²We have no goal but this. ³What could we want but to remember You? ⁴What could we seek but our Identity? (A Course in Miracles, W-258. See also ACIM Lesson 258 Insights.)

Everyone wants peace and happiness. But it cannot be found in the world of form. Every goal in the world at best offers temporary happiness. The peace we may seem to achieve never seems certain to last. We need to constantly defend against upsets that disturb our peace. What seems to bring happiness doesn’t last. All this is in keeping with the ego’s intent to seek and not find.

But the peace and happiness we seek is already ours. Only our allegiance to the ego makes us unaware of the presence of God’s Love. Beneath all of our seeking in the world is the desire to unite with God. God is the Love we seek, the safety and happiness. Nothing else will satisfy. We need to train our minds to seek where happiness and Love can be found.

Forgiveness lets us release the quest for forms that never satisfy. This release opens the veil to receive the Love of God. This is our heart’s desire. It is the desire to reunite with our Source — to be the Love that is our Self, the Son of God.

We Are Safe in the Love of God

Forgiveness ends all suffering and loss.

“Forgiveness paints a picture of a world where suffering is over, loss becomes impossible and anger makes no sense. ²Attack is gone, and madness has an end. ³What suffering is now conceivable? ⁴What loss can be sustained? ⁵The world becomes a place of joy, abundance, charity and endless giving. ⁶It is now so like to Heaven that it quickly is transformed into the light that it reflects. ⁷And so the journey which the Son of God began has ended in the light from which he came.

Father, we would return our minds to You. ²We have betrayed them, held them in a vise of bitterness, and frightened them with thoughts of violence and death. ³Now would we rest again in You, as You created us. (A Course in Miracles, W-249. See also ACIM Lesson 249 Insights.)

Do we want to be happy and peaceful? Do we want to know that we are loved and safe? Forgiveness clears the way for this to be a constant state of mind. We know we live in Love.

But when we believe we are the ego with a separate identity, we do not know that we are in Love. We see ourselves as disconnected from God’s Love. We have chosen specialness in place of Love’s oneness. It is this choice we need to forgive. This is how we welcome the Love the ego denies. The quest for specialness is replaced by the blessing of knowing we are eternally safe in the Love of God.

Awaken to the World of Love

³Our emphasis is not on giving up the world, but on exchanging it for what is far more satisfying, filled with joy, and capable of offering you peace.

Is it a loss to find a world instead where losing is impossible; where love endures forever, hate cannot exist and vengeance has no meaning? ²Is it loss to find all things you really want, and know they have no ending and they will remain exactly as you want them throughout time?

⁴Value …not [the little things the world sets forth], and they will disappear. ⁵Esteem them, and they will seem real to you.

Such is the choice. ²What loss can be for you in choosing not to value nothingness? ³This world holds nothing that you really want, but what you choose instead you want indeed! ⁴Let it be given you today. ⁵It waits but for your choosing it, to take the place of all the things you seek but do not want.

³Beyond this world there is a world I want. ⁴I choose to see that world instead of this, for here is nothing that I really want. (A Course in Miracles, W-129.1:3;3:1-2;5:4–6:5;7:3-4. See also ACIM Lesson 129 Insights.)

We live in a world of Love. It was created for us by our Creator as our Home, which He holds forever in His embrace.  He wants us to remember that He loves His Son eternally.

This Home we can claim right now. It will never be withdrawn nor fade in the brilliance Its Light. The ego has no interest in this Home. In fact, it denies It and tells us It is not real. When we follow the ego, we believe the body is real and “lives” in a world of other bodies amid myriad forms that it tells us we need.

But it’s all make believe, made to hide our real Home. Today we choose instead to accept the Love that God has given us and awaken to the world of Love.

Love Unites Us with Our Brother

To love my Father is to love His Son.

Let me not think that I can find the way to God, if I have hatred in my heart. ²Let me not try to hurt God’s Son, and think that I can know his Father or my Self. ³Let me not fail to recognize myself, and still believe that my awareness can contain my Father, or my mind conceive of all the love my Father has for me, and all the love which I return to Him.

I will accept the way You choose for me to come to You, my Father. ²For in that will I succeed, because it is Your Will. ³And I would recognize that what You will is what I will as well, and only that. ⁴And so I choose to love Your Son. ⁵Amen. If we believe we are a separate individual, hatred is inevitable. It is an attempt to project our guilt for separating from Love onto anything external. This projection holds separation in place instead of getting rid of it. It serves as a veil that keeps us from seeing the presence of Love that is everywhere. Love is What we are so this projection makes us unaware of our true Self.

We cannot Love a form that seems to be separate from ourselves, because Love is one. What is one cannot be separate. To see the Love that is our brother, we must use the vision of Christ that is in our mind. Christ sees only Love and disregards all form. With Christ’s vision, we see the Love our brother is and join with Him in loving our Father. We are one Love as God’s Son.

We Are Love and Nothing Else

This holy instant is salvation come.

What joy there is today! ²It is a time of special celebration. ³For today holds out the instant to the darkened world where its release is set. ⁴The day has come when sorrows pass away and pain is gone. ⁵The glory of salvation dawns today upon a world set free. ⁶This is the time of hope for countless millions. ⁷They will be united now, as you forgive them all. ⁸For I will be forgiven by you today.

We have forgiven one another now, and so we come at last to You again. ²Father, Your Son, who never left, returns to Heaven and his home. ³How glad are we to have our sanity restored to us, and to remember that we all are one. (A Course in Miracles, W-241. See also ACIM Lesson 241 Insights.)

Time is the ego’s tool for avoiding the present moment where peace is found. Any moment in time can be a holy instant. It is that instant when we forgive the past and let the awareness of present Love fill our mind. This Love knows no limits nor exceptions. It is the Love of our true Self.

When we let go of the past, we are letting go of the dream of separation. When we remember the past, we hold it as a defense against present Love. We do not see our brother as he is when we hold the past in our mind. We are overlaying this memory on our brother and see it reflected back to us.

But when we come to see our brother without the past, the Love he is is all there is to see. In this vision we learn that we are Love and nothing else. Today we welcome the Holy Spirit’s help to release the past and awaken to the Love in which we live and have our being.

Being in the Eternal Flow of Love

Today I will judge nothing that occurs.

I will be honest with myself today. ²I will not think that I already know what must remain beyond my present grasp. ³I will not think I understand the whole from bits of my perception, which are all that I can see. ⁴Today I recognize that this is so. ⁵And so I am relieved of judgments that I cannot make. ⁶Thus do I free myself and what I look upon, to be in peace as God created us.

Father, today I leave creation free to be itself. ²I honor all its parts, in which I am included. ³We are one because each part contains Your memory, and truth must shine in all of us as one. (A Course in Miracles, W-243. See also ACIM Lesson 243 Insights.)

The Light of Truth is in everyone. But this Light cannot be seen by the body’s eyes. It is the Light of Love, which has no form, being everywhere, without limit. Our true Self sees this Light, for It is Its Home.

Today we choose to give priority to the vision of our true Self. This Self sees only the truth and disregards the forms of the dream. With this vision, we recognize the Love that Is the Truth in everyone. We know we are safe in this Love, for It is unchangeable and eternal.

Following this vision, we walk in gratitude, for we are part of the eternal flow of Love to Itself.
