Accepting and Extending Love

Holy Spirit to Mary:
Today practice accepting Love in each now moment… Just focus on accepting Love and extending Love… Let the rest take care of itself… Let Love guide your perceptions… Let yourself be carried by Love… In Love there is no past and no future, only the eternal present. Let yourself become aware of Love’s eternal presence today…

Robert:
Today we read Lesson 213 in the Workbook of A Course in Miracles, which is a review of Lesson 193, “All things are lessons God would have me learn.” It gives a helpful explanation of God’s lessons: “A lesson is a miracle which God offers to me, in place of thoughts I made that hurt me.” (W-pII.213.1:2)

The ego interprets a lesson as punishment, especially if it’s perceived as painful. If I think I am in an unhappy situation or something is wrong or I’m experiencing bodily pain, the ego would interpret this lesson as punishment because I am guilty. Guilt is the glue that holds the ego thought system together.

But if God’s lesson is a miracle, then it is a lesson in Love, not punishment and guilt. So the perception of pain, unhappiness, fear and guilt is an opportunity to turn to God’s Voice for His lesson in Love. Thus if I am having a disturbing experience, it is an opportunity to turn away from ego’s lesson in guilt and open to God’s lesson in Love. His lesson will replace the thoughts I made that bring me pain and disturb my peace.

God’s lessons are happy lessons. His lessons lead me to remember that, “I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.” This is the only lesson God would have me learn. It is the lesson that releases me from the self-imposed limits of believing that I am separate from Love, confined to a body. Thus God’s lessons are not to be feared but welcomed. There is nothing I want more than to remember that I am innocent, I am loved and I am Love. And this is the lesson God would have me learn.

Choosing My Guide

Robert:
Today, like every day, I choose the kind of day that I would have. If I choose the Holy Spirit as my Guide, I choose a day of happiness and peace. If I choose the ego as my guide, I choose dissatisfaction and conflict, guilt and fear. The first choice leads to everything I want. The second leads to nothing, though sometimes nothing can be dressed in appealing images that disguise the emptiness they contain.

Today I choose to let go of self-deception by keeping my mind open to the Holy Spirit’s lead. He will teach me to recognize the images for what they are and to look past them to the Love that is always there and that I am. I choose to have a happy day.

Mary:
Today is another day of opening my mind to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. This requires my willingness to recognize ego thoughts as they come up and hand them over to the Holy Spirit for a corrected perception. I can recognize ego thoughts by the level of tension I feel. As soon as I recognize that I am not in peace, I can turn again to the Holy Spirit, Who will once again correct my perception.

I have such a wonderful Helper right in my mind Who is willing to transform my mind whenever I am willing. My opportunity today is to consistently practice receiving this powerful Help.

Return to Peace and Joy

Mary:
Love’s peace is eternal… Love’s joy is eternal… Love’s oneness is eternal… My job today is to accept the eternal.

As I am willing to accept the changelessness of peace, I will not be disturbed by the ever-changing problems found in the world of separation. I still get caught up in the constantly changing stories of the ego. My opportunity today is to let the Holy Spirit lift the ego’s veil as many times as is needed. As I am willing to do this, peace returns; joy returns; awareness of Love’s oneness returns.

Allowing my awareness of the eternal is what this day is for. And I give thanks.

Robert:
Joy comes from following Holy Spirit’s lead, because Holy Spirit always leads to Love. His vision always shows me the Love in my brother and reminds me that the perception of anything else is a call for Love. Today is a day to practice stepping back and following Holy Spirit’s lead to Love and joy, my natural state. Following Holy Spirit is a gift I give to myself and all my brothers, who are one with me.

Learning We Are Not Alone

Mary:
Holy Spirit, I am willing to be quiet and listen… I am willing to relax all I think I know and let go of tension… I give welcome to your peace and feeling of well-being… I give welcome to a correction in the way I perceive this world I see through the body’s eyes…

I let my mind quiet… I let the veil be lifted to see that the face of Christ is truly everywhere… I let myself be carried to the truth of Love’s oneness… I let myself be carried to the truth that nothing has happened to change God’s one Son…

From this place of opening to the truth, I can laugh at fear thoughts instead of taking them on as if they were real… I soak in the truth that all roads in the world of form are equally unreal… Now trusting in God’s World becomes easier… I see that Reality is simple and uncomplicated… I can relax now and let myself be carried by the truth… There is deep gratitude as I carry this remembrance into my day…

Robert:
The temptation to make decisions on my own seems to be very strong. I slip into it many times a day. I have observed that whenever I do this, I am not at peace. Somewhere in my mind I have decided that there is something I must defend against and I need to make plans to protect myself. This could only come from the part of my mind that identifies with the ego and believes it is separate from Love.

The key word here is “believes.” Beliefs can change. Beliefs change perception but not reality. The moment that I let go of belief that I am separate, the temptation to make decisions on my own disappears because I no longer perceive that I am on my own. The practice of stepping back and letting Holy Spirit guide all my decisions is how I learn that I am not on my own. What I believe is not set in stone and can be changed. I can learn that there is nothing in the world I really want.

Letting Holy Spirit guide all my decisions, including what store to go to to find shelving, becomes a lesson in which I learn that I am not alone. It’s about changing my beliefs. It’s not about the store or the shelving. It’s about the learning that I remain united with my Source. And it may also be about an opportunity for a holy encounter with someone I have never met before.

Today is another joyful day of practicing making no decisions on my own.

Remember the Light in You

Holy Spirit to Robert:
All your defenses, all your attempts to make plans for your safety and happiness, all your judgments stem from your belief that you are a body. The body is the ego’s central figure in a scheme to usurp God’s Creation and have dominion over a world of its making.

When you choose to identify with the body, you choose death over Life. You choose loss over wholeness. You choose fear over Love. You choose against your Source and thus you choose guilt. This is why it is essential that you learn the Holy Spirit’s lesson that you are not a body. You are free. You remain as Love created you. The body has nothing to do with What you are.

Step back… Step back… Step back… Open your mind and heart to the Light of Love… It shines in you eternally… Let yourself see Its reflection in all you look upon…. The reflection of this Light is not seen with the body’s eyes. It is seen through forgiving vision, the vision of Christ.

Remember the Light in you. It is eternal and it is always there for you to see. This is your Identity, not the image of a body. Let yourself remember that you are the Light of the world and the world will shine on you in love and peace.

Mary:
Remembering that I am not a body and that in truth I am free is my focus for today. Stepping back frequently throughout the day and letting my true Self correct all the thoughts in my mind is what my real job is today. It may look like I have many things to do today. But my only real job is to step back and follow Holy Spirit’s lead. This is how I will know that I am not a body, I am free. I truly am still as God created me. Remembering this is my opportunity today, and I give thanks.

From Frustration to Peace

Robert:
I am seeing that the ego is the wish to control. It is what the Course means when it says that the ego is the wish to usurp God. The ego is the maker of the dream, the world I see. Separation is inherent in making a world different from God’s Heaven. It is impossible for the ego’s world to be included in Heaven because it is the denial of God, the wish to wrest control from God. Only through illusions could this dream seem to be accomplished.

To the degree that I identify with the ego, I experience the wish to control and I get frustrated when I seem to be unable to control the world — a machine doesn’t work the way I want it to, computer software malfunctions, events don’t happen when I think they should — all these can trigger frustration. Frustration is simply a symptom of a wish to control and therefore a denial of my unity with God.

It is impossible to be frustrated with what never changes, unless I think I want something else. It is the wish for something other than the eternal Love of God that set up the frustrating world of separation. So the presence of frustration can be seen as a signal that I have chosen against God and if I want to be happy, I need to make another choice. Since God’s Will for me is perfect happiness, the other choice is clearly to choose God, my Creator, my Source.

Today if I experience anything other than peace, I will remind myself, “God is my Source. His Will for me is perfect happiness. I am willing to accept His Will as mine and I am willing to accept His Help.”

Mary:
Inspiration from Spirit comes only when I remember to choose peace. My practice today is to remember to step back frequently and choose peace. As I am willing to do this, inspiration comes naturally. My willingness to choose peace is all that is important. This is my focus for today.

Returning to My True Home

Mary:
From our reading today in A Course in Miracles, this stood out to me:

Be innocent of judgment, unaware of any thoughts of evil or of good that ever crossed your mind of anyone. Now do you know him not. But you are free to learn of him, and learn of him anew. Now is he born again to you, and you are born again to him, without the past that sentenced him to die, and you with him. Now is he free to live as you are free, because an ancient learning passed away and left a place for truth to be reborn. (T-31.I.13)

Today is a day of practice in opening to the truth. It takes constant vigilance because as I watch my thoughts, I see how often I bring the past into the present. Letting go of this habit is of primary importance as I walk along the road to truth with the Holy Spirit as my Guide. Watching the meaning that I give to things with Holy Spirit really helps me see the barriers to Love that I put up so often.

Today I have another opportunity to let go of judgment — deciding what anything means on my own. The Holy Spirit is right there in my mind waiting to correct my mistaken perceptions. The truth is there is nothing anywhere but Love. It is when I think I see something else that I need a change of mind. The opportunity I have today is to let my mind be transformed by the Holy Spirit. And I give thanks.

Robert:
Today I was reminded of my experience as a young child playing in my sandbox. I would get into a zone, a concentrated focus of playing that I was building roads and bridges, driving vehicles and making “engine sounds” as I made believe I was in this little world I was making. I was barely aware of there being anything outside the sandbox. It became my world. When my mother called me to dinner from just 30 feet away, she had to yell loudly to get my attention, for I had nearly tuned out the outer world completely.

This is a great metaphor for the experience of being in this world. God and the Holy Spirit are almost completely shut out. God’s Voice calls to me from nearer than my heart, yet seems distant and barely noticed because I have given my full attention to a fantasy world I am playing in. Just as I could step out of the sandbox and out of that fantasy to return home for dinner, it is possible to step out of the dream of separation, but this time to return to my Home in Heaven. I just need to be willing to loosen my attention on the dream and open my mind to the Holy Spirit’s call.

Today I will practice stepping out of the “sandbox” and refocusing my attention on the Holy Spirit’s dream of awakening that will lead me back to my true Home.
