The Key to Peace of Mind

My only function [forgiveness] is the one God gave me. The idea for today reaffirms your commitment to salvation. It also reminds you that you have no function other than that. Both these thoughts are obviously necessary for a total commitment. Salvation cannot be the only purpose you hold while you still cherish others. The full acceptance of salvation [forgiveness] as your only function necessarily entails two phases; the recognition of salvation as your function, and the relinquishment of all the other goals you have invented for yourself.

This is the only way in which you can find peace of mind.

Today’s idea offers you escape from all your perceived difficulties. It places the key to the door of peace, which you have closed upon yourself, in your own hands. It gives you the answer to all the searching you have done since time began. (, A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 65,W-pI.65.1;2:3;3:2-4. See also ACIM Lesson 65 Insights.)

Peace of mind is the payoff for forgiveness. And a peaceful state of mind experiences the unity of God’s Love. All of us are seeking this. In the ego world we experience lack of Love and constant conflict. This is the solution that resolves all conflict and clears away the barriers to Love’s presence.

We do not really want to continue going down the myriad dead ends the ego leads us on. It cannot lead us to the peace of mind or to changeless Love because it does not know the way. It can only offer meaningless substitutes.

Now is the time to commit to the practice of bringing all our perceptions to the Holy Spirit with willingness to see them as He sees them. He will show us the truth that lies beyond the ego’s false images. This is the journey to peace of mind.

Finding Solutions to Our Problems

The problem of separation, which is really the only problem, has already been solved.

The temptation to regard problems as many is the temptation to keep the problem of separation unsolved.”

If you could recognize that your only problem is separation, no matter what form it takes, you could accept the answer because you would see its relevance. Perceiving the underlying constancy in all the problems that seem to confront you, you would understand that you have the means to solve them all. And you would use the means, because you recognize the problem.

We will try to free our minds of all the many different kinds of problems we think we have. We will try to realize that we have only one problem, which we have failed to recognize. We will ask what [the problem] is, and wait for the answer. We will be told. Then we will ask for the solution to it. And we will be told. (, A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 79,W-pI.79.1:4;4:1;6:2-4;7:3-8. See also ACIM Lesson 79 Insights.)

All forms are illusions made from the belief in separation. Forms have no meaning of their own. A perceived problem comes from the meaning we are giving to the form. This self-imposed meaning makes the real problem invisible to us. It is the meaning we give it that keeps the problem in place.

This is why we need to clear our minds of our self-imposed meaning by asking of the Holy Spirit what the problem is. We of ourselves do not know because we are engaged with the illusion through our belief. The act of asking for help is an expression of our willingness to consider that there may be a meaning we are not aware of. This offers the Holy Spirit an opportunity to teach us what the real problem is — the belief in separation.

Once we have accepted the Holy Spirit’s answer for what the problem is, asking for the solution expresses our willingness to change our mind. The Holy Spirit will give us the solution in a form that we can accept. His teaching is always individualized in recognition of our belief in limitations. This practice is a journey of awakening to the recognition that every problem has already been solved.

Remembering the Peace of God Is Ours

I want the peace of God.

To say these words is nothing. But to mean these words is everything. If you could but mean them for just an instant, there would be no further sorrow possible for you in any form; in any place or time. Heaven would be completely given back to full awareness, memory of God entirely restored, the resurrection of all creation fully recognized.

To mean you want the peace of God is to renounce all dreams. For no one means these words who wants illusions, and who therefore seeks the means which bring illusions. He has looked on them, and found them wanting. Now he seeks to go beyond them, recognizing that another dream would offer nothing more than all the others. Dreams are one to him. And he has learned their only difference is one of form, for one will bring the same despair and misery as do the rest.

It is this one intent [to share the Will of God] we seek today, uniting our desires with the need of every heart, the call of every mind, the hope that lies beyond despair, the love attack would hide, the brotherhood that hate has sought to sever, but which still remains as God created it. With Help like this beside us, can we fail today as we request the peace of God be given us? (, A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 185,W-pI.185.1;5;14. See also ACIM Lesson 185 Insights.)

Everyone in the world wants the peace of God. We want to remember our true Self, which dwells in God’s peace. And yet this seems to be an impossible dream, a utopia beyond our reach. This is because we have chosen a dream of specialness and limitation. We believe that specialness will offer us more than everything, more than the limitless Love and eternal peace of our Creator. This is the belief that gives the ego’s dream priority in our mind. But this dream can only offer empty images that have no meaning because they are not real.

It is impossible for the oneness of Love to be divided so that some may have more and others less. So while we believe we want this dream, we seek for reality that cannot be found in the dream that denies the Reality of God.

Today we choose to follow the Voice for God and accept Its lessons that teach us what is true and what is false, what is real and what is unreal. As we learn to recognize illusions for what they are, our inner Guide will help us look past meaningless illusions to remember the peace of God is ours now.

Let the Light of Love Shine Through Us Today

My holiness shines bright and clear today.

Today I wake with joy, expecting but the happy things of God to come to me. I ask but them to come, and realize my invitation will be answered by the thoughts to which it has been sent by me. And I will ask for only joyous things the instant I accept my holiness. For what would be the use of pain to me, what purpose would my suffering fulfill, and how would grief and loss avail me if insanity departs from me today, and I accept my holiness instead?

Father, my holiness is Yours. Let me rejoice in it, and through forgiveness be restored to sanity. Your Son is still as You created him. My holiness is part of me, and also part of You. And what can alter Holiness Itself? (, A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 285,W-pII.285. See also ACIM Lesson 285 Insights.)

When we identify with the ego, we are asking for unhappiness, for grief, sickness, fear and death. Believing we are separate from our Creator is believing we are unholy. That belief sends out requests for images that seem to confirm the reality of separation. So the pain and suffering we experience in the world is there by our request when we believe the ego’s insanity is our identity.

Accepting our holiness is sanity because we are accepting what is real instead of believing in what could never be real. Only Love is real. As we accept the Self that Love created, joy and peace come with it. This is the Will of our Creator and it is the Will of our Self as well. This Self is holy because It remains united with the Source of holiness. God’s holiness is ours. As we let go of our belief in a past that is not here, we make way for the Light of the present to show us the reality of Love’s presence.

We Are Always Safe in God’s Peace

Your peace is with me, Father.  I am safe.

Your peace surrounds me, Father. Where I go, Your peace goes there with me. It sheds its light on everyone I meet. I bring it to the desolate and lonely and afraid. I give Your peace to those who suffer pain, or grieve for loss, or think they are bereft of hope and happiness. Send them to me, my Father. Let me bring Your peace with me. For I would save Your Son, as is Your Will, that I may come to recognize my Self.

And so we go in peace. To all the world we give the message that we have received. And thus we come to hear the Voice for God, Who speaks to us as we relate His Word; Whose Love we recognize because we share the Word that He has given unto us. (, A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 245,W-pII.245. See also ACIM Lesson 245 Insights.)

Another Workbook Lesson tells us that God goes with us wherever we go. That is why His peace is always with us. But we must be willing to accept His gift of peace or its presence remains unknown to us.

The invitation for our Father to send us those who need to feel God’s peace is a gift, for the practice of offering peace to a distressed brother reinforces for us the awareness that God’s peace is within us now. The more we practice remembering His peace within us and extend that peace to our brothers, the more we learn that we can count on God’s peaceful Presence in every moment.

This is the lesson we must learn to free ourselves from the ego’s messages of fear and guilt. Our true Self is united with our Creator in His peace. This can never change. But because of our long-time dedication to the ego’s goal of separation from our Creator, we need to frequently affirm that God’s peace is with us to open our minds to accept God’s Presence. This is how we build confidence that we are always safe in God’s changeless peace. This is how we teach what we need to learn.

The Path to Inner Peace

This holy instant would I give to You.
Be You in charge. For I would follow You,
Certain that Your direction gives me peace.

And if I need a word to help me, He will give it to me. If I need a thought, that will He also give. And if I need but stillness and a tranquil, open mind, these are the gifts I will receive of Him. He is in charge by my request. And He will hear and answer me, because He speaks for God my Father and His holy Son [my true Self].” (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 361-365, W-pII.361-365. See also ACIM Lesson 361 Insights.)

We can all enjoy a life of peace and happiness. But we must put the One Who knows the way in charge of every moment of every day.

We do not enjoy a life of love and peace because we have put the guide in charge that denies the Source of peace and love. The ego will always lead us to conflict and fear.

The affirmation at the beginning of this lesson is a dedication to let the Voice for God direct our thoughts and actions. We are guaranteed to receive all the help we need to return us to the remembrance of the peace that is our natural state. We need only follow Him. This practice will bring us Home.

We Live in God

God is my refuge and security.

I will identify with what I think is refuge and security. I will behold myself where I perceive my strength, and think I live within the citadel where I am safe and cannot be attacked. Let me today seek not security in danger, nor attempt to find my peace in murderous attack. I live in God. In Him I find my refuge and my strength. In Him is my Identity. In Him is everlasting peace. And only [in peace] will I remember Who I really am.

Let me not seek for idols. I would come, my Father, home to You today. I choose to be as You created me, and find the Son whom You created as my Self. (, A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 261,W-pII.261. See also ACIM Lesson 261 Insights.)

An idol is defined as a representation of a god. Thus an idol is a substitute that stands between our perception and the reality of God, our Creator. When we identify with a body, we are choosing a substitute for our true Identity in God.

An idol has no meaning of its own. Its only seeming meaning comes from the meaning we give it through our belief. Beliefs are always subject to change. That is why the body, which represents our belief in a separate identity, always feels vulnerable. It is not a place where we find safety, but rather requires our constant vigilance to protect it.

To find lasting peace, we need to relinquish our identification with an image that is inherently fearful. Our true Identity is in the changelessness of God. This Identity remains united in God’s Love. This is where we live and have our being. This is where we are perfectly safe and know with certainty that there is nothing to defend against. We truly live in God’s Love.
