Letting Go of Limitations

Sometimes a teacher of God may have a brief experience of direct union with God. In this world, it is almost impossible that this endure. It can, perhaps, be won after much devotion and dedication, and then be maintained for much of the time on earth. But this is so rare that it cannot be considered a realistic goal. If it happens, so be it. If it does not happen, so be it as well. All worldly states must be illusory. If God were reached directly in sustained awareness, the body would not be long maintained. Those who have laid the body down merely to extend their helpfulness to those remaining behind are few indeed. And they need helpers who are still in bondage and still asleep, so that by their awakening can God’s Voice be heard.

Do not despair, then, because of limitations. It is your function to escape from them, but not to be without them. If you would be heard by those who suffer, you must speak their language. If you would be a savior, you must understand what needs to be escaped. Salvation is not theoretical. Behold the problem, ask for the answer, and then accept it when it comes. Nor will its coming be long delayed. All the help you can accept will be provided, and not one need you have will not be met. Let us not, then, be too concerned with goals for which you are not ready. God takes you where you are and welcomes you. What more could you desire, when this is all you need? (A Course in Miracles, M-26.3-4)

We are a teacher of God when we let His Voice guide us in all things or in all our doings. When we experience lack of peace in any form, the practice of recognizing there is a need for help, accepting His help and applying it in our lives, is a teaching opportunity. We teach by demonstration.

Each time we let go of a limiting thought, we demonstrate that we don’t have to keep our perceived limitations. Our life becomes more peaceful and happy, and our brothers learn from our demonstration. We are all united by the Voice for God. With this practice, every perceived problem becomes a gift. It is a teaching opportunity for the Holy Spirit to teach us and, through our demonstration, teach the world.

Today we will be vigilant for opportunities to free ourselves from limitations by accepting the Help given us by God.

The Answer to All Our Problems

If you are willing to recognize your problems, you will recognize that you have no problems. Your one central problem [belief in separation] has been answered, and you have no other. Therefore, you must be at peace. Salvation thus depends on recognizing this one problem [separation], and understanding that it has been solved. One problem, one solution. Salvation is accomplished. Freedom from conflict has been given you. Accept that fact, and you are ready to take your rightful place in God’s plan for salvation.

Your only problem has been solved! Repeat this over and over to yourself today, with gratitude and conviction. You have recognized your only problem, opening the way for the Holy Spirit to give you God’s answer [the oneness of His eternal Love]. You have laid deception aside, and seen the light of truth. You have accepted salvation for yourself by bringing the problem to the answer. And you can recognize the answer, because the problem has been identified.

You are entitled to peace today. A problem that has been resolved cannot trouble you. Only be certain you do not forget that all problems are the same. Their many forms will not deceive you while you remember this. One problem, one solution. Accept the peace this simple statement brings. (, A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 80,W-pI.80.1-3. If we are not in perfect peace, we have an unresolved problem — some form of belief that separation is real. The ego, the idea that separation is real, disguises the idea by giving it myriad forms. We need to recognize that all forms — bodies, personalities, events, time and space — are all deceptions that hide the one idea of separation.

The answer to this problem is as singular as the problem. Only the oneness of Love is real. What is one can have no conflict and must be at peace. The Holy Spirit has been given us in our minds to teach us to recognize the deception and let it go. In its place we receive the vision of Christ, the vision of the innocence and oneness of Love. Today we bring all grievances, upsets, judgments and fear to the Holy Spirit with willingness to shown the one problem that underlies them all. Thus we will learn that our only problem has been solved.

Accelerating Our Awakening to Love

When you hear only one Voice you are never called on to sacrifice. On the contrary, by being able to hear the Holy Spirit in others you can learn from their experiences, and can gain from them without experiencing them directly yourself. That is because the Holy Spirit is One, and anyone who listens is inevitably led to demonstrate His way for all.

You are not persecuted, nor was I. You are not asked to repeat my experiences because the Holy Spirit, Whom we share, makes this unnecessary. To use my experiences constructively, however, you must still follow my example in how to perceive them. My brothers and yours are constantly engaged in justifying the unjustifiable. My one lesson, which I must teach as I learned it, is that no perception that is out of accord with the judgment of the Holy Spirit can be justified. I undertook to show this was true in an extreme case, merely because it would serve as a good teaching aid to those whose temptation to give in to anger and assault would not be so extreme. I will with God that none of His Sons should suffer.

The message of the crucifixion is perfectly clear:

Teach only love, for that is what you are. (A Course in Miracles, T-6.I.10:4-11:7;13. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The Holy Spirit’s judgment is always based on the fact that only Love is real. This is the lesson we must all learn if we would awaken to our true Self and remember we are at Home in God’s Love.

The Holy Spirit joins together everyone in the world. When anyone learns to perceive an experience as the Holy Spirit judges it, it is learned on everyone’s behalf. We don’t need to repeat the experience. We need only claim the lesson as our own by accepting it.

The Holy Spirit’s presence in everyone brings the Power of Love to heal the world. Scientists network thousands of computers together to accelerate learning for artificial intelligence. Yet this learning is only in the domain of the ego’s illusions. The Holy Spirit’s “network” links everyone in the world together to learn the lessons that lead to the Knowledge of the truth of our Being in Love. Every brother in Holy Spirit’s network who accepts His lessons accelerates our awakening. We all go Home together.

Joining With the Strength of Love in Us

This world you seem to live in is not home to you. And somewhere in your mind you know that this is true. A memory of home keeps haunting you, as if there were a place that called you to return, although you do not recognize the voice, nor what it is the voice reminds you of. Yet still you feel an alien here, from somewhere all unknown.

We speak today for everyone who walks this world, for he is not at home. He goes uncertainly about in endless search, seeking in darkness what he cannot find; not recognizing what it is he seeks. A thousand homes he makes, yet none contents his restless mind. He does not understand he builds in vain. The home he seeks can not be made by him. There is no substitute for Heaven. All he ever made was hell.

When you are still an instant, when the world recedes from you, when valueless ideas cease to have value in your restless mind, then will you hear His Voice. So poignantly He calls to you that you will not resist Him longer. In that instant He will take you to His home, and you will stay with Him in perfect stillness, silent and at peace, beyond all words, untouched by fear and doubt, sublimely certain that you are at home.

Our investment in the illusions of the world, in valueless ideas, prevents us from knowing the stillness, joy and certainty of our Home in God. Each time we let go of value we have given to a form of belief in separation, we open an opportunity to let God’s peace come in. We experience, at least for an instant, the comfort of our Home with our Father. We may come back to our activities in the world but the experience of the strength of God that is our Home stays in our mind.

As we practice this more, we become more aware of the strength of Love in us. We recognize, more and more, that same Love in our brothers whom we once called our enemy. Let us join together today in the practice of stepping back from our perceptions of the world and going to the peace within us where we can taste the comfort of our true Home.

Remembering Our True Identity

The Love of God is what created me. The Love of God is everything I am. The Love of God proclaimed me as His Son. The Love of God within me sets me free.

Pain is my own idea. It is not a Thought of God, but one I thought apart from Him and from His Will. His Will is joy, and only joy for His beloved Son. And that I choose, instead of what I made.

In silence and in true humility I seek God’s glory, to behold it in the Son whom He created as my Self.

I seek the function that would set me free from all the vain illusions of the world. Only the function God has given me can offer freedom. Only this I seek, and only this will I accept as mine. (, A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 209, W-pI.209-212. See also ACIM Lesson 209 Insights.)

It doesn’t seem that we are God’s Son, united in His Love, joy and peace. This is because we believe in a false identity that is acting out the idea that separation is real. By accepting this belief we see only a world that confirms separation is real. We see only what we want to see. By choosing to believe in separation we see separation’s representations to the exclusion of Reality. Selective seeing does not change Reality but makes Reality unknown to us.

By choosing the peace of God and His joy, by choosing to recognize God did not make pain and that we remain His Son, we renounce the false self-image that has denied Truth. Each time we accept the Holy Spirit’s vision in place of the ego’s denial of Truth, we open our minds to remember we are all united as the one Self God created as His Son. In that unity we remember our oneness with our Creator. We remember eternal Love. We remember we are not a body; we remain as God created us.

Being in Tune with God’s Love

Grace is acceptance of the Love of God within a world of seeming hate and fear. By grace alone the hate and fear are gone, for grace presents a state so opposite to everything the world contains, that those whose minds are lighted by the gift of grace can not believe the world of fear is real.

We prepare for grace in that an open mind can hear the Call to waken. It is not shut tight against God’s Voice.

Suffice it, then, that you have work to do to play your part. …your part is still what all the rest depends on. As you take the role assigned to you, salvation comes a little nearer each uncertain heart that does not beat as yet in tune with God.

Forgiveness is the central theme that runs throughout salvation…

It is here that miracles are laid; to be returned by you from holy instants you receive, through grace in your experience, to all who see the light that lingers in your face. What is the face of Christ but his who went a moment into timelessness, and brought a clear reflection of the unity he felt an instant back to bless the world? How could you finally attain to [oneness] forever, while a part of you remains outside, unknowing, unawakened, and in need of you as witness to the truth? Our heart beats in tune with God when we accept wholeheartedly the oneness of Love. We have let go of all ideas spawned by belief in separation. We have accepted salvation for ourselves and all our brothers. This is the final goal of God’s plan for our salvation.

We do our part in His plan by being willing to let go of our belief in separation. Forgiveness, letting go of the mistaken idea of separation, is the means that opens our mind to the Holy Spirit’s lessons in Love. As we are willing to turn over our perceptions to the Holy Spirit and receive His gift of Christ’s vision in their place, we learn to look past the fearful and guilty dreams that disturb our peace. With Christ’s vision, we overlook the separate forms of the world and see our brothers unified with us in God’s eternal Love.

Each time we accept this loving correction, we bring more of the Light of truth to the world. We help our brothers come back with us to the Heaven that is our Home when forgiveness is complete.

Replacing the Illusion of Death with Eternal Life

Comparison must be an ego device, for love makes none. Specialness always makes comparisons. It is established by a lack seen in another, and maintained by searching for, and keeping clear in sight, all lacks it can perceive. This does it seek, and this it looks upon. And always whom it thus diminishes would be your savior, had you not chosen to make of him a tiny measure of your specialness instead. Against the littleness you see in him you stand as tall and stately, clean and honest, pure and unsullied, by comparison with what you see. Nor do you understand it is yourself that you diminish thus.

Pursuit of specialness is always at the cost of peace. Who can attack his savior [every brother] and cut him down, yet recognize his strong support? Who can detract from his omnipotence, yet share his power? And who can use him as the gauge of littleness, and be released from limits? You have a function in salvation. Its pursuit will bring you joy. But the pursuit of specialness must bring you pain. Here is a goal that would defeat salvation, and thus run counter to the Will of God. To value specialness is to esteem an alien will to which illusions of yourself are dearer than the truth.

The key you threw away God gave your brother, whose holy hands would offer it to you when you were ready to accept His plan for your salvation in the place of yours. How could this readiness be reached save through the sight of all your misery, and the awareness that your plan has failed, and will forever fail to bring you peace and joy of any kind? Through this despair you travel now, yet it is but illusion of despair. The death of specialness is not your death, but your awaking into life eternal. You but emerge from an illusion of what you are to the acceptance of yourself as God created you. (A Course in Miracles, T-24.II.1-2;14. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The ego uses comparison to make differences and separation seem real. Love makes no comparisons because it is one. There is no “other” to compare with. The ego is dedicated to comparing because its seeming existence depends on it.

We have been given another way of seeing that dissolves the ego’s illusions. Christ’s vision sees with the eyes of Love. This is a vision in our mind that overlooks the ego’s images of separation and sees only Love. We free ourselves to be the Love we were created to be by giving our attention to the vision of Love in our minds. This vision shows us God’s peace and joy and recognizes that this peace and joy are ours.

We were created as Love by Love. As we use Christ’s vision when we look upon our brother, he becomes our savior because he shows us the Love we were created to be. Love always joins with Love. Separation and comparison disappear. In the unity of Love, we know that we are one with our Creator, at Home in Heaven.
