Welcoming the Love in Our Brothers

The Holy Spirit cannot punish sin. Mistakes He recognizes, and would correct them all as God entrusted Him to do. But sin He knows not, nor can He recognize mistakes that cannot be corrected. For a mistake that cannot be corrected is meaningless to Him. Mistakes are for correction, and they call for nothing else. What calls for punishment must call for nothing. Every mistake must be a call for love. What, then, is sin? What could it be but a mistake you would keep hidden; a call for help that you would keep unheard and thus unanswered?

Look upon your Redeemer, and behold what He would show you in your brother, and let not sin arise again to blind your eyes. For sin would keep you separate from him, but your Redeemer would have you look upon your brother as yourself. Your relationship is now a temple of healing; a place where all the weary ones can come and rest. Here is the rest that waits for all, after the journey. And it is brought nearer to all by your relationship. (A Course in Miracles, T-19.III.4;11. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

In a holy relationship we see our brother as our one Self. To judge a brother or even to see him as a body identity is to see our brother as different and therefore not our Self.

The belief in sin maintains the perception of differences and separation. This is why in the ego’s world everyone is constantly looking to find fault, see differences and justify belief that we are separate. This sense of separation must be maintained for the ego thought system to seem real. This is why sin — an uncorrectable mistake — is the foundation upon which the ego builds its illusion of separation.

As we are able to lay down our judgments with the Holy Spirit’s help, the walls of separation begin to crumble. The Light of Love that we share with all our brothers shines more brightly. Love shines through. Mistaken perceptions are corrected with Love. We welcome the truth of Love in our brothers as we see them as part of our one Self, God’s loving Creation.

We Are Never Alone

My present happiness is all I see.

Unless I look upon what is not there, my present happiness is all I see. Eyes that begin to open see at last. And I would have Christ’s vision come to me this very day. What I perceive without God’s Own Correction for the sight I made is frightening and painful to behold. Yet I would not allow my mind to be deceived by the belief the dream I made is real an instant longer. This the day I seek my present happiness, and look on nothing else except the thing I seek.

With this resolve I come to You, and ask Your strength to hold me up today, while I but seek to do Your Will. You cannot fail to hear me, Father. What I ask have You already given me. The uncertainty, anxiety, pain, fear and guilt that we experience in the world need not be. It is not God’s Will for us. All that we experience in the world is nothing more than the effect of believing that we have succeeded in changing ourselves from what God created. Only in illusion could this seem to be true.

We have already been given the Correction that will dispel the illusion and open our eyes to the present happiness God wills for us. Along with the Correction, God gives us all His strength to help us lay down all false perceptions and beliefs. We are not alone nor can we ever be alone.

Today we choose to accept the Help already given us to let go of the past and welcome the happy present that is already ours. As we choose our present happiness, we bless the world, for the world is one with us.

Forgiveness Returns Us to Love

Forgiveness ends all suffering and loss.

Forgiveness paints a picture of a world where suffering is over, loss becomes impossible and anger makes no sense. Attack is gone, and madness has an end. What suffering is now conceivable? What loss can be sustained? The world becomes a place of joy, abundance, charity and endless giving. It is now so like to Heaven that it quickly is transformed into the light that it reflects. And so the journey which the Son of God began has ended in the light from which he came.

Father, we would return our minds to You. We have betrayed [our minds], held them in a vise of bitterness, and frightened [our minds] with thoughts of violence and death. Now would we rest again in You, as You created us. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 249, W-pII.249. See also ACIM Lesson 249 Insights.)

We were created as Mind in the Mind of God. Mind can only extend Itself and does so without limit.

Because God is Love, the Mind we share with God is Love. Mind extends with the thought of Love. This thought of Love never leaves Its Source. As God’s Thought of Love, we are His Creation, His one Son united with Him. We share God’s attributes — eternal, changeless, indivisible and wholly loving.

To believe we are anything but the Love of God is a denial of What we are. Mind cannot make bodies, except in illusion. But believing we are a body does not change the truth that we remain the loving Thought of God.

When we experience anything but the peace, joy and Love of God, we need to forgive the mistaken belief that we are not as God created us. Forgiveness will bring us Home to the truth that we remain Love in the Mind of Love. This is how forgiveness ends all suffering and loss.

We Have the Means to Remember Love

Conflict must be between two forces. It cannot exist between one power and nothingness. There is nothing you could attack that is not part of you. And by attacking it you make two illusions of yourself, in conflict with each other. And this occurs whenever you look on anything that God created with anything but love. Conflict is fearful, for it is the birth of fear. Yet what is born of nothing cannot win reality through battle. Why would you fill your world with conflicts with yourself? Let all this madness be undone for you, and turn in peace to the remembrance of God, still shining in your quiet mind.

…what [God] loves must be forever quiet and at peace because it is His home.

You who are beloved of Him are no illusion, being as true and holy as Himself. The stillness of your certainty of Him and of yourself is home to Both of You, Who dwell as One and not apart. Open the door of His most holy home, and let forgiveness sweep away all trace of the belief in sin that keeps God homeless and His Son with Him. You are not a stranger in the house of God. Welcome your brother to the home where God has set him in serenity and peace, and dwells with him. Illusions have no place where love abides, protecting you from everything that is not true. You dwell in peace as limitless as its Creator, and everything is given those who would remember Him. Over His home the Holy Spirit watches, sure that its peace can never be disturbed.” (A Course in Miracles, T-23.I.8;9:6-10:8. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

Our natural condition is in a state of peace. If anything disturbs our peace, it is a sure sign that we are believing in a false image of ourselves. It is an indication that there is a belief to be forgiven or let go.

This is why forgiveness is the central teaching of the Course. It is the means to remove the barriers to the awareness of Love’s presence. God’s Love and peace are already ours, being What we are. All we need do to remember God, our Home, is to let go of the self-imposed barriers that make us unaware of Who we are.

Every day, every moment that we experience a disturbance of our peace, is an opportunity to forgive and heal. All things are lessons God would have us learn. We learn that we are Love by extending Love. We learn that we are Love by forgiving the false ideas that hide Love’s presence from our awareness. Let us walk in gratitude today that we have the means to remember Who we are.

Connecting with Our Inner Light

Very quietly now, with your eyes closed, try to let go of all the content that generally occupies your consciousness. Think of your mind as a vast circle, surrounded by a layer of heavy, dark clouds. You can see only the clouds because you seem to be standing outside the circle and quite apart from it.

From where you stand, you can see no reason to believe there is a brilliant light hidden by the clouds. The clouds seem to be the only reality. They seem to be all there is to see. Therefore, you do not attempt to go through them and past them, which is the only way in which you would be really convinced of their lack of substance. We will make this attempt today.

After you have thought about the importance of what you are trying to do for yourself and the world, try to settle down in perfect stillness, remembering only how much you want to reach the light in you today,–now! Determine to go past the clouds. Reach out and touch them in your mind. Brush them aside with your hand; feel them resting on your cheeks and forehead and eyelids as you go through them. Go on; clouds cannot stop you.

If you are doing the exercises properly, you will begin to feel a sense of being lifted up and carried ahead. Your little effort and small determination call on the power of the universe to help you, and God Himself will raise you from darkness into light. You are in accord with His Will. You cannot fail because your will is His.

Have confidence in your Father today, and be certain that He has heard you and answered you. You may not recognize His answer yet, but you can indeed be sure that it is given you and you will yet receive it. Try, as you attempt to go through the clouds to the light, to hold this confidence in your mind. Try to remember that you are at last joining your will to God’s. Try to keep the thought clearly in mind that what you undertake with God must succeed. Then let the power of God work in you and through you, that His Will and yours be done. This is a powerful guided meditation to help us connect with the Light of our true Self. The Light is in us hidden only by our grievances, our judgments about the world we experience. With this process we learn that these grievances have no real substance and we can easily move past them. As we connect with our inner Light, we illuminate the minds of our brothers and ourselves. There can be no greater gift we can give.

Resting in the Holy Spirit’s Peace

You are the dreamer of the world of dreams. No other cause it has, nor ever will. Nothing more fearful than an idle dream has terrified God’s Son, and made him think that he has lost his innocence, denied his Father, and made war upon himself.

Rest in the Holy Spirit, and allow His gentle dreams to take the place of those you dreamed in terror and in fear of death. He brings forgiving dreams, in which the choice is not who is the murderer and who shall be the victim. In the dreams He brings there is no murder and there is no death. The dream of guilt is fading from your sight, although your eyes are closed. A smile has come to lighten up your sleeping face. The sleep is peaceful now, for these are happy dreams.

Dream softly of your sinless brother, who unites with you in holy innocence. And from this dream the Lord of Heaven will Himself awaken His beloved Son. Dream of your brother’s kindnesses instead of dwelling in your dreams on his mistakes. Select his thoughtfulness to dream about instead of counting up the hurts he gave. Forgive him his illusions, and give thanks to him for all the helpfulness he gave. And do not brush aside his many gifts because he is not perfect in your dreams. There is a rest available to us that surpasses anything the world has to offer. It is always with us, waiting only on our willingness to accept it. We rest in the Holy Spirit when we are willing to accept His guidance in all that we think and do. The Holy Spirit will show us the peace beyond the chaotic appearances of the world.

As we let the Holy Spirit show us the loving truth in our brothers, we learn of it in ourselves. And as this Love becomes more clear to us through our forgiveness, peace becomes our natural state. Today we accept the Holy Spirit’s help that we may rest in His peace.

Remembering Our One Self

You are one Self, united and secure in light and joy and peace. You are God’s Son, one Self, with one Creator and one goal; to bring awareness of this oneness to all minds, that true creation may extend the allness and the unity of God. You are one Self, complete and healed and whole, with power to lift the veil of darkness from the world, and let the light in you come through to teach the world the truth about yourself.

You are one Self, in perfect harmony with all there is, and all that there will be. You are one Self, the holy Son of God, united with your brothers in that Self; united with your Father in His Will. Feel this one Self in you, and let It shine away all your illusions and your doubts. This is your Self, the Son of God Himself, sinless as Its Creator, with His strength within you and His Love forever yours. You are one Self, and it is given you to feel this Self within you, and to cast all your illusions out of the one Mind that is this Self, the holy truth in you. The Course reminds us many times that we are not a body and remain as God created us. Here what God created us to be is thoroughly described. Our natural state as we were created is joy and peace, constantly extending Love. All of God’s strength is ours, never limited. We lack nothing, for we have been given all that is real.

This sense of limitation, weakness, vulnerability and uncertainty we experience in the world is only because we identify with a false idea of what we are. This false idea is a denial of what we were created to be. Fortunately the choice to believe in a false idea can be reversed. We have been given a Voice from our Creator That calls to us unceasingly to remind us of the truth of what we are.

Today we practice listening to that Voice, for we would remember the Love and joy and peace of our one Self. We would remember What God created us to be.
