From Fear to Love, Guilt to Innocence

Trusting [the truth in] your brothers is essential to establishing and holding up your faith in your ability to transcend doubt and lack of sure conviction in yourself. When you attack a brother, you proclaim that he is limited by what you have perceived in him. You do not look beyond his errors. Rather, they are magnified, becoming blocks to your awareness of the Self that lies beyond your own mistakes, and past his seeming sins as well as yours.

Perception has a focus. It is this that gives consistency to what you see. Change but this focus, and what you behold will change accordingly. Your vision now will shift, to give support to the intent which has replaced the one you held before. Remove your focus on your brother’s sins, and you experience the peace that comes from faith in sinlessness. This faith receives its only sure support from what you see in others past their sins. For their mistakes, if focused on, are witnesses to sins in you. And you will not transcend their sight and see the sinlessness that lies beyond.

Therefore, in practicing today, we first let all such little focuses give way to our great need to let our sinlessness become apparent. We instruct our minds that it is this we seek, and only this, for just a little while. …We seek for innocence and nothing else. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 181, W-pI.181.1-3:2,5. If we want to be free of fear and guilt, we must shift our focus away from separation and sin to the oneness of Love. This means we must focus on accepting the Holy Spirit’s vision, which is the vision of our true Self. Our true Self is Love and nothing else, so It sees only Love in every brother.

Love is changeless and it is this that makes it worthy of our trust. As we learn to see with this vision, we recognize the trustworthy in every brother and learn that it is also in us. To focus on the Truth, we must let go of all thoughts of the past. Memories of the past are the ego’s defense against awakening to Love in the present moment.

As we shift our focus to the present moment, the Holy Spirit will help us let go of the past (forgive) and see the radiant Light of Love that shines everywhere in the eternal present. As we see this, we know we are safe and innocent in the Love of our Creator.

Blessings Come with Holy Spirit’s Vision

Judgment is but a toy, a whim, the senseless means to play the idle game of death in your imagination. But vision sets all things right, bringing them gently within the kindly sway of Heaven’s laws. What if you recognized this world is an hallucination? What if you really understood you made it up? What if you realized that those who seem to walk about in it, to sin and die, attack and murder and destroy themselves, are wholly unreal? Could you have faith in what you see, if you accepted this? And would you see it?

Hallucinations disappear when they are recognized for what they are. This is the healing and the remedy. Believe them not and they are gone. And all you need to do is recognize that you did this. Once you accept this simple fact and take unto yourself the power you gave [hallucinations], you are released from them. One thing is sure; hallucinations serve a purpose, and when that purpose is no longer held they disappear. Therefore, the question never is whether you want them, but always, do you want the purpose that they serve?

Only two purposes are possible. And one is sin [separation], the other holiness [unity]. Nothing is in between, and which you choose determines what you see. For what you see is merely how you elect to meet your goal. (A Course in Miracles, T-20.VIII.7:1-8:7;9:1-4. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

Judgment requires perception of differences. It separates off what is judged as different, making separation seem real. Judgment is the ego’s favorite toy because it justifies its seeming existence. The cost of playing with this toy is loss of awareness of our true Identity as Love and nothing else.

We have a choice between playing with the toy of judgment or accepting the Holy Spirit’s vision, which shows us the Love we share with everyone and everything. The choice for vision brings us the comfort of knowing we are loved without limit. It brings us the joy of sharing our Love with everyone. It brings us the certainty that nothing has changed God’s Son, our true Identity. We are truly invulnerable, for the Love and power of God is ours.

Claiming God’s Peace as Ours

Now will I seek and find the peace of God.

In peace I was created. And in peace do I remain. It is not given me to change my Self. How merciful is God my Father, that when He created me He gave me peace forever. Now I ask but to be what I am. And can this be denied me, when it is forever true?

Father, I seek the peace You gave as mine in my creation. What was given then must be here now, for my creation was apart from time, and still remains beyond all change. The peace in which Your Son was born into Your Mind is shining there unchanged. I am as You created me. I need but call on You to find the peace You gave. It is Your Will that gave it to Your Son. There is a saying about a child of a wealthy father, “He was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.” We were born as Son of the Source of infinite abundance. He gave us all of Himself in our creation — all His peace, joy and Love. This is wealth beyond measure in the world, for it is not of the world.

We do not have to do anything or go anywhere to claim the peace that is our birthright. We simply need to stop trying to make a world of illusions that hides God’s gifts from our awareness. They are still there, unchanged, waiting for our acceptance.

Today we practice pausing in the midst of our doing in the world to remember the gifts that our ours. As we do this we remember our Identity as God’s Son, His Creation.

How to Be a Messenger of Love

[The Holy Spirit] Who has received for you the messages of God would have them be received by you as well. For thus do you identify with Him and claim your own.

It is this joining [with Holy Spirit] that we undertake to recognize today. We will not seek to keep our minds apart from Him Who speaks for us, for it is but our voice we hear as we attend Him. He alone can speak to us and for us, joining in one Voice the getting and the giving of God’s Word; the giving and receiving of His Will.

The world recedes as we light up our minds, and realize these holy words are true. They are the message sent to us today from our Creator. Now we demonstrate how they have changed our minds about ourselves, and what our function is. For as we prove that we accept no will we do not share, our many gifts from our Creator will spring to our sight and leap into our hands, and we will recognize what we received. We become a messenger of Love by accepting Holy Spirit’s guidance in our doing in the world. We need to redirect our attention from the ego’s mind set to listening within for the Holy Spirit’s [healing] inspiration. As we make the Holy Spirit our chosen Guide, He teaches us to be Love’s expression in the world.

It can appear as a smile as we pass by a stranger. It may be sharing a helpful idea for someone who has asked for help or it may be simply recognizing the truth of Love in our brother, with no overt form of demonstration. No matter what the circumstance,  the Holy Spirit first brings us to feel the Love of God within and express it in a form that is most helpful in the world.

This is what forgiveness does. By letting go of judgment, it opens the doors for Love to freely extend. By accepting the Love within and offering it to the world, we become messengers of Love.

We Are Safely At Home in Love

A meaningless world engenders fear. The totally insane engenders fear because it is completely undependable, and offers no grounds for trust. Nothing in madness is dependable. It holds out no safety and no hope. But such a world is not real. I have given it the illusion of reality, and have suffered from my belief in it. Now I choose to withdraw this belief, and place my trust in reality. In choosing this, I will escape all the effects of the world of fear, because I am acknowledging that it does not exist.

God did not create a meaningless world. How can a meaningless world exist if God did not create it? He is the Source of all meaning, and everything that is real is in His Mind. It is in my mind too, because He created [everything that is real] with me. Why should I continue to suffer from the effects of my own insane thoughts, when the perfection of creation is my home? Let me remember the power of my decision, and recognize where I really abide. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 53, W-pI.53:3-4. See also ACIM Lesson 53 Insights.)

It seems that we are really at the mercy of outside forces from the world, which we cannot control. Accidents happen. People seem to do helpful and harmful things unexpectedly. We try to arrange our world to our liking, yet our best efforts still leave us feeling out of control. This is because all our efforts to manipulate the world are focused on illusions, which obey no laws that would make them reliable.

Only what is changeless is reliable. The Love of God is changeless. We can be confident that all God’s Love and gifts are ours now because He gave them to His Son in His Creation. We have been given all that is Real. To know we have these gifts, we have to let go of our insistence on making the world’s illusions seem real. We have to give up our belief in the thought of separation from Love.

We already have the help we need to correct our mistaken beliefs. We need only choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide in all our thoughts and doing. As we let ourselves be taught to let go of the unreal and accept the real, changeless Love of God, we find peace. We remember we are Love and we are Loved. We remember we are at Home in the safety of Love.

Remembering We Are in Heaven Now

You whose mind is darkened by doubt and guilt, remember this: God gave the Holy Spirit to you, and gave Him the mission to remove all doubt and every trace of guilt that His dear Son has laid upon himself. It is impossible that this mission fail.

The Communication Link [Holy Spirit] that God Himself placed within you, joining your mind with His, cannot be broken. You may believe you want It broken, and this belief does interfere with the deep peace in which the sweet and constant communication God would share with you is known. Yet His channels of reaching out cannot be wholly closed and separated from Him. Peace will be yours because His peace still flows to you from Him Whose Will is peace. You have it now. The Holy Spirit will teach you how to use it, and by extending it, to learn that it is in you. God willed you Heaven, and will always will you nothing else. The Holy Spirit knows only of His Will. There is no chance that Heaven will not be yours, for God is sure, and what He wills is as sure as He is.

You do not have to know that Heaven is yours to make it so. It is so. Yet to know it, the Will of God must be accepted as your will. (A Course in Miracles, T-13.XI.5:1-2;8;10:5-7. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

No matter how engrossed we become in the dream of separation, we cannot break our connection with God, our Creator. That Link ensures that God’s gift of all of Himself — His Love, His joy and His peace — remains ours eternally. Because of this unbreakable link, our will is united with God, one and the same.

The ego is afraid of God’s Will because the ego is the belief that it is possible to oppose God’s Will. The ego believes, correctly, that accepting God’s Will as ours could be its end. Accepting God’s Will is accepting the peace of Heaven as our Home. This is the lesson the Holy Spirit was sent to teach us. This lesson reminds us that we have not changed What God created by choosing to deny It. We have merely made God’s Will unknown to us.

By choosing to welcome the Holy Spirit’s reinterpretation of our perceptions in the world, we learn to recognize the ego’s illusions as unreal. We then easily let illusions go and accept God’s Will and His Gifts as ours. We free ourselves from the ego’s false beliefs. We remember we are in Heaven now.

Faith Brings Healing to the World

Faith is the opposite of fear, as much a part of love as fear is of attack. Faith is the acknowledgment of union. [Faith] is the gracious acknowledgment of everyone as a Son of your most loving Father, loved by Him like you, and therefore loved by you as yourself. It is His Love that joins you and your brother, and for His Love you would keep no one separate from yours. Each one appears just as he is perceived in the holy instant, united in your purpose to be released from guilt. You see the Christ in him, and he is healed because you look on what makes faith forever justified in everyone.

Faith is the gift of God, through Him [Holy Spirit] Whom God has given you. Faithlessness looks upon the Son of God, and judges him unworthy of forgiveness. But through the eyes of faith, the Son of God is seen already forgiven, free of all the guilt he laid upon himself. Faith sees him only now because it looks not to the past to judge him, but would see in him only what it would see in you. [Faith] sees not through the body’s eyes, nor looks to bodies for its justification. [Faith] is the messenger of the new perception, sent forth to gather witnesses unto its coming, and to return their messages to you.

For faith arises from the Holy Spirit’s perception, and is the sign you share [His perception] with Him. (A Course in Miracles, T-19.I.10-11;12:2. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

Faith is dedication to Truth. To have faith in our brother is to see past the body to the truth in him that he is only Love, united with the Love that is our true Self. To bring faith to the world and ourselves, we need to be dedicated wholly to truth. We need to have faith in the truth that only Love is real.

The body’s eyes cannot see Love, for Love has no form. The justification for faith comes through using Holy Spirit’s vision in our mind. His vision overlooks the body and what it seems to do to see the truth that is the one Son of God. To bring healing to the world, we need to choose the Holy Spirit’s perception in place of what we perceive with the body’s eyes. This is the choice we make in every moment. As we accept Holy Spirit’s vision, we learn that we are innocent and united with our brother in God’s Love.
