The Forgiving Dream Leads Us Home

Whenever you feel fear in any form,—and you are fearful if you do not feel a deep content, a certainty of help, a calm assurance Heaven goes with you,—be sure you made an idol, and believe it will betray you. For beneath your hope that it will save you lie the guilt and pain of self-betrayal and uncertainty, so deep and bitter that the dream cannot conceal completely all your sense of doom. Your self-betrayal must result in fear, for fear is judgment, leading surely to the frantic search for idols and for death.

Forgiving dreams remind you that you live in safety and have not attacked yourself. So do your childish terrors melt away, and [real world] dreams become a sign that you have made a new beginning, not another try to worship idols and to keep attack. Forgiving dreams are kind to everyone who figures in the dream. And so they bring the dreamer full release from dreams of fear. (A Course in Miracles, T-29.IX.9:1-10:4. Dreams of separation are Self attack for they are attempts to break our eternal unity in Love. Because only Love is real, it is impossible that this connection could really be broken. So we dream up a childish game in which we make believe we live in a separate world which we control. But the fear that comes with the betrayal of our Self in these dreams makes us search for idols to “protect” us from anticipated retribution for this betrayal. These idols are believed to be external and out of our control. But this is only because we have chosen to forget that we made them up.

The Holy Spirit offers us a different dream in which forgiveness replaces the judgments which we have projected on the external idols. As we forgive the judgments, the presence of Love is seen and our enemies are transformed into our loving brothers. This real world is focused entirely on the presence of Love instead of the forms that were used to hide Love’s presence. The purpose of the dream has been changed from maintaining judgment to forgiving our judgments and opening our minds to see the Love that has always been there.

Today we choose, with the Holy Spirit, to dream of the real world where kindness, happiness and peace have replaced fear, guilt and conflict. This dream will bring us Home to God’s Love.
