The Gateway to a Happy, Peaceful Life

by Rev. Maria Kingsley, O.M.C.

We all want to be happy.

But we have to find out what happiness really means to us.

Some say, “happiness is having this car, is being free of cancer, is being successful in my career, is having a loving companion, or being debt free” — all these or more choices for happiness. But we all know that this in itself does not make us truly happy. There is always more we want. It seems that true and lasting happiness is elusive and can’t really be counted on in this world.

We look towards physical conditions for happiness. It seems to be the road to finally getting what we always wanted. But our desires come from our ego and childish ways of seeing the world. We learned as children that what our parents wanted is what we also want — or what we fight against. Either way, it is a thought that we carry forward. We live the thoughts of our parents, either as followers or as fighters against them. Unfortunately, we don’t recognize it, or when we do see what we are doing, that we are ‘just like our parents’, we don’t know how to change it.

The Course says:

The mind is closed and will not be released. The thought protects projection, tightening its chains, so that distortions are more veiled and more obscure; less easily accessible to doubt, and further kept from reason. (W-pII.1.2:2-3)

We are unwilling to change our mind about what we made true as children, reacting to fear and energies of survival and seeking safety in an uncertain situation.

The fear of survival is a natural, instinctual reaction and is necessary for the survival of the humankind. However, we are here today, as adults, to go beyond survival. We want to remember that we are not bodies, we will not let fear rule us, and remember that we are Spirit guided by the mind we choose: the Mind of God, or the ego-mind. Both are using the power of God, which is Love, to extend or project what we see as important at the time.

For most of my life I have had the strong thought that we need schooling for adults to undo our childlike thoughts, feelings, fears and ways to be ‘re-made.’ In this school, to move from childhood into adulthood, we would unlearn our earthly physically focused ways, our parents’ ways, and we would learn to choose our Heavenly Parent’s Thoughts. Forgiveness helps us with just that. And that is the ‘school’ I have been adopting ever since I found the Course.

However, if we do not change our ways, we will be stuck in a life of sorrow, fear, lack and short-term gratifications. We will experience the attack of others as we will join in the attack towards others, all of which hurts only ourselves.

We learn to like this attack on others and get so addicted to the energy of rage and anger that it is sometimes difficult, even for so-called good people, to not fly into raging behaviors and thoughts. The world around us seems to do much of this, and so it is accepted as ‘only normal’ to be angry about what others are doing or saying.

We want to remember that it is our thoughts that give this all the meaning it has for us. We are unforgiving and feel justified in it.

We are still the little children who are selfish and self-centered in an ego way and cannot (as children) see why that is so, or how to change it.

The Course says this in such a profound way: An unforgiving thought is one which makes a judgment that it will not raise to doubt, although it is not true. (W-pII. 1.2:1)
We all receive Guidance, and we do notice – even faintly sometimes – that gentle small Voice within that helps us see things differently, and respond with kindness.

This gentle voice is there to keep us safe, to see the good, to help us choose with forgiveness. It is our True Self. And when we connect with It, It is a loving, joyful, gentle feeling within us. I love to connect with that sweet, gentle feeling.

When we do connect and tune into that Energy, we want to remember that It is the Power we are really looking for — That which keeps us safe, That which smoothes out the path before us, That which provides all we need and guides our step safely.

So many times I have come to near accidents, and when I thought about it, I realized that I was just guided to turn or move or do something that averted a mishap or perhaps a major accident. I was so gently guided and somehow I responded in such a way that I came out safe and whole, sometimes without even recognizing at the time that I was in danger. But I never was, because I put my mind into His Hands.

The lessons that I have learned are many, and there are more to come. But I realize that the school of life does not have to be ‘of hard knocks.’ It can be just the recognition that when we come from Love, when we live in Love, this awesome Love Energy goes before us and truly straightens out the path before us. I feel very lucky to be living in this time of ACIM, which allows me to let go of the anger of my childhood, to unlearn my childish ways, and to forgive and see it with gentle loving eyes.

I send loving energy to all the parents out there to teach their children how to be kind, gentle, feel safe and learn helpful ways to receive Guidance, even when their parents are not present. Parents cannot be everywhere children are, and so parents are relieved from worries and fears about their children’s safety.

To stay in a forgiving, loving inner state of mind is the path to happiness, to peace of mind and to safety and health. It is the gateway to the next level of being. It is the doorway that opens to us the life we truly want.
Do nothing then, and let forgiveness show you what to do, through Him Who is your Guide, your Savior and protector, strong in hope, and certain of your ultimate success. (W-pII.1.5:1)

There Is Another Way of Looking at This

by Rev. Myron Jones, O.M.C.

When I heard on the news that Donald Trump was our elected president, I was in shock. I couldn’t believe it. I tried to tell myself that the damage he could do was limited and that it would be OK, but with the passage of time, I was to discover that it was worse than I imagined. Children being torn from their parents were the worst so far and my constant struggle to release the anger and resentment and, let me be honest, the growing hatred I felt toward him, got trampled under this new outrage.

Even so, I knew that how I felt had to change. I was hurting myself, and all of the Sonship with my attitude. I was reinforcing rage, hatred, disdain, and disgust; I was reinforcing separation, fear, and guilt. My thoughts and beliefs affect all of my life because they are not discreet and they are not discreet to my personal story; they affect all of us. I was polluting consciousness with these beliefs and these runaway emotions.

So what I did was to ask for another way of looking at this. I realized that the only thing happening is in my mind and in my mind is where my business is. The only thing happening there is that I made a judgment. It was really that simple. I made a judgment and that judgment fueled everything else that came after. We make judgments all the time and we change our minds all the time so this should be simple and easy, I thought. But as it turned out, simple as it was, it was not so easy.

The reason it was not easy is that having made the judgment, I now believed it and when I went to the Holy Spirit, I was asking for help but asking amiss. I was asking how to forgive this terrible man because that was my judgment and so my belief about him. The Holy Spirit was answering me but I wasn’t hearing the answer because it didn’t make sense according to what I thought I knew. That is why Jesus tells us not to make a decision and then ask for help. But he knew we would and so he gave us a process to use to turn it all around. (See Text chap. 30, The Rules for Decision.)

Because of my judgment, I was suffering. This motivated me to do what needed to be done regardless of how impossible it seemed to me. I accepted that I don’t know what anything is for and that I don’t want to make a decision on my own (with the ego). I willingly let go of my judgment and I asked the Holy Spirit to show me another way of looking at this. I did this because I remembered my function, my one goal and my purpose, which is the peace of God.

My anger began to fall away. It did this in jumps and starts for a while, but pretty quickly, I was feeling quite neutral about the whole thing, so that was good, but not enough. I needed to feel only love toward Donald Trump and that still seemed impossible. But in God, nothing is impossible and so I went back to the Holy Spirit and asked for a different way to see this. Again, I put aside my judgment that I could not love this man, and I opened my mind and heart to another way to see.

A true miracle occurred at that point. All separation thoughts fell away and I was filled with love when I thought of Donald, my dear brother and part of my Self. I began to pray for him every day. I prayed that he would be open and receptive to his highest guidance. I prayed for his happiness and for his peace of mind. This doesn’t mean that I agree with his policies or that I would ever vote for him, but I don’t wish him any ill will, and I love and appreciate him.

That was an attitude that I felt but didn’t understand, even myself. But there it was. Since then, I have come to see the whole situation differently. I see his part in our story as essential. He represents a part of our shared mind. He tweets his outrage at someone disagreeing with him, and I see my outrage that he didn’t agree with me, or I remember my outrage that my boss blamed me for something I didn’t do. I mean, who has not felt outraged when they felt threatened?

I have been accepting the gift of detachment lately, and this has allowed me to see things on different levels. I see how situations affect the story of Myron and how they appear on the world stage and how different they look when seen from the imagined distance of the effects on the awakening Sonship. I see my part. I see how I affect all of us through my choices.

This detachment helps me to recognize that there is always another way of looking at the world, a way that is encouraging and helpful and loving and that I can see it if I choose to. I can see through fear or I can see through love and this is true in every circumstance. How I choose to see is going to help lift us all out of suffering or it will bring us all deeper into the illusion. It is a big responsibility, but it is simple and easy to make the right choice.

Certainty of Change

by Rev. Mary Manke, O.M.C.

The only thing certain about this world is it will change. Images that shift and change have no meaning nor content. The changeless is eternal and is only certain. Your certainty lies in Love for only that is real, only that has meaning.

Trust in your Source to supply whatever you seem to need. Until you understand He has given you everything, you will encounter fear. This is the opportunity to practice listening and letting go of the false idea. In this practice you open more and more to truth, peace and Love. In this way you experience instants of your true Home and not the imagined place you make.

Your miniscule desire to experience the impossible holds this world before your eyes. Your experience of a changing world is only a dream. Desire only the truth, peace or Love, and awakening is yours. You may deny the simple truth, but you can never change it. You have a Guide with you always Who leads you out of sleep, Who shares all He knows with you, and Who has no end. Of this you can be certain.

Oil On Water

by Rev. Jim Peterson, O.M.C.

Old fears surface
like oil on water.

I no longer suppress their rising
for their intensity
thrives on inattention.

I welcome them.
They tell a story
of miscreation and
help guide me back
to truth about myself
and those around me.

Their presence is a blessing.
For they tell me of my errors.

Not in deeds
but in thoughts.

Only peace exists.

Through our tortured thoughts
we hide our awareness
of peace.

Fear is the holy messenger that
tells us of our folly.

I now walk through the fear
and find Peace.
