Lesson 76: I Am Under No Laws but God’s

“There are no laws except the laws of God. This needs repeating, over and over, until you realize it applies to everything that you have made in opposition to God’s Will.” (W-pI.76.6:1-2)

So simple. And yet it asks me to dissolve every belief that I have in the physical and relative world and to replace them in something so great I cannot even get my mind around it. How awesome. How terrifying.

I remember when I attended my first ACIM book study. I felt like I had stepped into a different realm. I had. I felt light headed and unsteady. The next morning, I remember thinking that if I continued to attend this line of study my entire world would change. Just as I was contemplating this, my friend who had attending with me had come to the same conclusion. Up to that point, my life had been a conglomeration of heart-break and pain. What did I have to lose? What indeed! I chose to continue.

Eighteen years later, I am an ordained minister with Pathways of Light and spiritual ministry director at my local Unity church. My main assignment is to be what I call a midwife to consciousness. As a midwife, I guide the birthing of a new way of thinking from the relative physical, always changing world to the absolute unchangeable world of the Divine, God. It is a journey I humbly step on to every day. I am constantly reminded that “The body is endangered by the mind that hurts itself.” Our thoughts and beliefs effect our experience. My mantra has become, “How can I see this situation/condition differently?”

Recently a beloved friend and work associate who had been suffering from an illness shared that she recently found a small booklet written by Eric Butterworth. His instruction was simple. He said to simply stop, take a breath, repeat the phrase “This is an illusion. It has no power.” She found it so reassuring. Profoundly simple and yet powerful to the extreme. It is the same message that Lesson 76 is giving: Stop… Breathe… REALize… There are no laws but God’s.

When we study ACIM, do we understand that our experience of a ‘miracle’ means that we are seeing rightly? And when we are sick and tired and afraid and experiencing lack, we are not seeing rightly?

It takes great courage and faith to let go of everything we have been taught in the realm of our changeable reality. It takes great courage and faith to take in something so simple and yet has complete and total power. “I am under no laws but God’s.”

Beloved Sally — Returned Home

On July 17th, 2013, darling Sally left the dream returning Home to our holy Father. I met Sally at Pathways of Light in 2005. We joined at weekend retreats and Wednesday night group study sessions.

For the past two years, Sally and I were mind healing partners, meeting over the phone once a week to share our spiritual growth through the ACIM Practitioner courses offered through Pathways of Light. We worked on 909: Wellness Through Mind Healing and, 918: The Power of Prayer and Meditation. We were starting to work on 911: The Healing Journey Inward when she transitioned. Now Reverend Christine Anderson and I are meeting at that time to continue working on that Course in honor of Sally and for our continued mind healing.

Sally also co-facilitated the Pathways of Light ACIM teleconference study group which meets every Saturday morning as well as faithfully attending the Sunday morning teleconference study group on A Course in Miracles.

I learned a lot from Sally. I learned I am not here to fix or rescue. In truth, none of us have to be fixed or rescued. As Holy Spirit reminds us, we are all the perfect reflection of God’s Love, peace, joy and holiness. Even if we perceive that we are in need of fixing, Holy Spirit will “fix” our misperceptions and bring us the truth if we are willing. I learned with Sally not to preach as a way to teach. Holy Spirit is our teacher and Holy Spirit doesn’t preach or judge. Spirit is gentle and patient and reminds us of the truth of who we are if we are willing to listen and receive.

I learned from Sally to laugh, no matter what. Even though we might have begun our sharing with discussing particular challenges, through our studying the ACIM Practioner courses and being reminded to go to Spirit for the Truth, by the end of the phone calls, we ended up laughing. And Sally’s laughter will live on forever and ever.

The learning didn’t stop just because Sally isn’t in her body. I received three messages from Sally soon after her transition:

1. There is no death; it’s just a made up story. In truth, I died into Love, peace and joy; I died into Life; I Am Home.

2. Just keep smiling darlings; It’s All Good.

3. Don’t grieve my going; I AM forever present.

And Sally’s laughter lives on. Thank you Sally for your gifts and for continuing to send me your angel messages, which I will share with my brothers and sisters.

The One About Security

About three years ago, I invested $100.00 in a security that was so obscure I promptly forgot about it. Earlier this month, a friend who invested a considerable amount in the same security, called and gave me a website that tracked the investment. The inside scoop, (rumors) are calling for it to “soon” hit the big boards. If that happens, I may see hundreds of thousands of dollars from my small stake. I can live with that!

Last week as I was at a small shopping mall near my house and I noticed a new cellular service center had opened. The huge sign in front promised, “4-G Unlimited calls, Texts and Data” for $50.00 per month (tax included) and no contract required. I’ve been paying $109.00 plus tax, for the same service. Immediately I signed up, the company switched my phone number to the new service and just like that, I’m saving over $700.00 a year. I can live with that.

Nancy and I watched the Seattle Seahawk vs Green Bay Packer football game. Actually, I watched. She read a fashion magazine. Although the Hawks played poorly, they still beat the Packers and, in Green Bay! (Sorry Rev. Sharon, we’re just a better team!) A Seattle football team headed for the Superbowl, I can live with that.

A brother of mine underwent surgery for stage three esophagus cancer and the report is, the surgeons removed all the cancer and he didn’t lose his voice box, which was a concern. Although very early in recovery, he is doing quite well. I can live with that.

During a meditation, I was feeling full of gratitude when I realized it was just the outside circumstances of my life that were making me happy. That recognition led me to pay very close attention to what was going on emotionally. Is it possible that money and other favorable situations cause my joy? Honestly, that seems so very true! Unfortunately, it cannot be true though. I am promised in ACIM that there really isn’t even an “outside.” Everything is in my mind. And for any Course student that may be reading this, you know there are multiple X multiple passages from the course in support of that idea.

What happened to my very strong resolve that I want to live in the truth? How can money, health and a sense of a well-managed life offer me security? I am willing to believe none of those things can, but they sure seem to! Apparently I have a strong belief that security (as I define it) will make me happy. Lesson 101 states, “God’s will for me is perfect happiness.” If that is true, why do I seem to care so much about what I think will bring me happiness and security? It’s even obvious to me that my thoughts about what makes me feel secure are the problem. Perhaps a re-commitment to what I think will truly align me with security is in order. The opening two sentences in Chapter 31 state, “How simple is salvation! All it says is what was never true is not true now and never will be.” What if those words were written for me… Can I live with that?
