Silent Miracles

by Dimitri Saliuk, Student of A Course in Miracles

This October, my family and I visited California for a vacation that also included some work commitments. We enjoyed the wonderful weather in a seaside town. I was fortunate to find an in-person group for A Course in Miracles just a five-minute walk from our accommodation. Although it doesn’t rain often, one evening we experienced a downpour, and the temperature dropped significantly. While my children and I were getting ready to drive to my wife’s workplace, she was finishing up her shift.

We put on our jackets and got into our SUV. After about five minutes, just before an intersection, I heard a bump and a screeching sound to my left. A convertible compact car zoomed past me, cut me off, and honked. At that moment, I realized we had just been in a fender bender, and the situation was clear.

My older son exclaimed, “Wow, that car just bumped into us!” We pulled over right behind the convertible. For some reason, I felt almost excited, wanting to remain peaceful and helpful.
However, just a moment after stepping out of the car, I was confronted by a stocky man, about 50 or 60 years old. At first, he anxiously paced around his car, then headed toward me and exclaimed in a strong voice, “You hit me!” At that moment, all my excitement and joy seemed to drain away, replaced by fear and anxiety. He repeated his accusation, and I felt anger bubbling up, with an inner dialogue emerging: “Why do I have to deal with this?” Nevertheless, I managed to reply calmly and asked, “What is your name, sir? Are you alright?”

His surprised expression showed he hadn’t expected my tone. I introduced myself, and he told me his name.
I proceeded to share my perspective on the situation, but he disagreed and continued in an angry manner.

Suddenly, Lesson 191 came to mind: “I am the Holy Son of God Himself.” and I redirected that thought to the man standing in front of me: “You are the Holy Son of God Himself.” In that moment, the weight of negative emotions seemed to dissipate.
I then suggested that we invite a third party, such as the police or a nearby business, for possible video evidence to help us resolve our disagreement.

Cliff, the man’s name, fell silent for a few moments. Then, with a calmer and gentler voice, he said, “Listen, let’s go home. I’ll take care of my car, and you take care of yours.”

At that moment, I realized he was so afraid of me being the aggressor that he took on that role himself in the hope of not getting hurt — what A Course in Miracles describes as “a call for help.” I asked if we should exchange our information in case there was damage requiring significant expenses.

He was visibly uncomfortable with the idea but reluctantly agreed after stating, “I hardly have any damage; it looks like it’s mostly your car that got scratched.”
During the exchange of information, he seemed nervous, speaking with a trembling voice and shaky hands.

Finally, as we were about to part ways, I asked, “May I shake your hand, Cliff?” We shook hands, and I said, “I’m glad you’re alright, sir.”

The lesson flashed through my mind again: “You are the Holy Son of God Himself.” Cliff smiled and left.
When I got back into my car, my older son asked, “Why did he smile? He was so angry at first!”

Later, I reflected on how miracles happen all the time; they are often very subtle and quiet. What could have easily turned into a dramatic event instead became a quiet miracle, contributing to our collective awakening.

Dimitri Saliuk, born in 1991, is a stay-at-home dad who grew up in the small town of Zhydachiv in western Ukraine. Since early childhood, he experienced a pull toward spirituality.
In 2016, he moved to the United States, where, within less than a year, he was introduced to A Course in Miracles. It resonated deeply within him, and since then, he’s been a Course student. With the help of his mentors, teachers, and students, he implements the lessons in daily life.
