The Desire for Lucid Living

I read one of Jon Mundy’s Sunday articles recently. Jon has been one of my favorite Course teachers for decades. He spoke of a way of navigating this apparent world and called it lucid living. 

“Lucid living: i.e. The alive, attentive, self-aware self, conscious of the dreamlike quality of our world without being caught in the dream, the game, the play, the news, and the soap-opera of our politics and our everyday world.” 

What a great way to live!  

That sounds like an attractive goal for us while we see ourselves as bodies. We are clearly being taught that we are not bodies, but we seem to make enormous efforts to care for the health and comfort of our bodies. From the time we wake, we become obsessed with this. And we become focused on our specialness in comparison to others. 

“How bitterly does everyone tied to this world defend the specialness he wants to be the truth!” (T-24.VII.1:1) 

“Nothing his specialness demands does he withhold.” (T-24.VII.1:3) 

And while it (specialness) calls to him he hears no other Voice.”(T-24.VII.1:5) 

I see in my own life how I seek specialness. I am competitive. I make comparisons. I am protective of how I see my perceived accomplishments. And I am embarrassed by what could be seen as my failings. I make judgments on people that range from the world’s most powerful leaders to the most benign people who are just trying to get by. 

Can I truly expect that my dedication to the daily study of ACIM will heal me from this desire to be special?

The Course tells me: 

“This course makes no attempt to teach what cannot easily be learned. It’s scope does not exceed your own, except to say that what is yours will come to you when you are ready.” (T-24.VII.8:1-2) 

Sometimes I wonder if I will ever be ready. But I can say with conviction that I have developed a trust that I am being Guided. It sometimes seems to take time for me to step back from a situation and ask for Guidance. But I do have faith in my Guide, Holy Spirit. 

I am being taught that seeing the innocence in all my brothers is my pathway to inner peace. I realize I need help in seeing this Oneness instead of these different bodies and personalities.

The world should be seen as the classroom where I learn to do this. And all this will come to me when I am ready. That is the Holy Spirit’s promise. 

So I try to see my brothers as innocent Sons of God. I ask the Holy Spirit’s Help in my efforts. I am grateful to be on this holy, spiritual path. 

And I trust He is doing His Work.
