Complete Forgiveness

Perhaps it is not yet quite clear to you that each decision that you make is one between a grievance and a miracle. Each grievance stands like a dark shield of hate before the miracle it would conceal. And as you raise it up before your eyes, you will not see the miracle beyond. Yet all the while it waits for you in light, but you behold your grievances instead.

Then let us ask of Him Who knows this Son of God in his reality and truth, that we may look on him a different way, and see our savior shining in the light of true forgiveness, given unto us. We ask Him in the holy Name of God and of His Son, as holy as Himself:

Let me behold my savior in this one You have appointed as the one for me to ask to lead me to the holy light in which he stands, that I may join with him.

The body’s eyes are closed, and as you think of him who grieved you, let your mind be shown the light in him beyond your grievances.” (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 78,W-pI.78.1;7. See also ACIM Lesson 78 Insights.)

The body’s eyes cannot see the Light of the Son of God in our brothers. The Light of God’s Son is seen in the Mind we share with God. It is through the Holy Spirit in our mind that we are shown the truth in our brothers and ourselves.

The Holy Spirit teaches us that the images of the world are meaningless, have no value and can do no harm. Forgiveness is accomplished as we lay aside the images of the world because we have learned the images do nothing.

As we withdraw the value we have placed on the world’s images, our grievances fade away and we see the Light of God’s Son. As this Light shines upon us, we realize It is our own as well. There is only one Light. The adversary we thought stood before us is now recognized as our one Self, united in Love. Forgiveness is complete.

Our Inner Place of Peace

To do anything involves the body. And if you recognize you need do nothing, you have withdrawn the body’s value from your mind. Here is the quick and open door through which you slip past centuries of effort, and escape from time. This is the way in which sin loses all attraction right now. For here is time denied, and past and future gone. Who needs do nothing has no need for time. To do nothing is to rest, and make a place within you where the activity of the body ceases to demand attention. Into this place the Holy Spirit comes, and there abides. He will remain when you forget, and the body’s activities return to occupy your conscious mind.

Yet there will always be this place of rest to which you can return. And you will be more aware of this quiet center of the storm than all its raging activity. This quiet center, in which you do nothing, will remain with you, giving you rest in the midst of every busy doing on which you are sent. For from this center will you be directed how to use the body sinlessly. It is this center, from which the body is absent, that will keep it so in your awareness of it. (A Course in Miracles,T-18.VII.7-8. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

We have been given the means to awaken from the dream of separation with all its fear and guilt. The practice of frequently pausing to go to the center of peace within opens our awareness to the Holy Spirit’s inspiration. It is helpful to start the day with a time when you quiet your mind by setting aside thoughts of activities of the day, of bodily concerns and of thoughts about the past or future.

The quiet center of peace is in the now moment. As we let our minds quiet, we become aware of the Holy Spirit in our mind. We open to His perception, Christ’s vision. We open to His Voice to guide us as we return to the busy doing we are sent on in the service of awakening.

The practice of frequently pausing during the day to step back and enter the place of peace again becomes easier. The more we practice this, making it a habit, the more we use the body for the Holy Spirit’s holy purpose instead of the ego’s.

The Path to Joy and Peace

The real world is a symbol, like the rest of what perception offers. Yet it stands for what is opposite to what you made. Your world is seen through eyes of fear, and brings the witnesses of terror to your mind. The real world cannot be perceived except through eyes forgiveness blesses, so they see a world where terror is impossible, and witnesses to fear can not be found.

The real world holds a counterpart for each unhappy thought reflected in your world; a sure correction for the sights of fear and sounds of battle which your world contains. The real world shows a world seen differently, through quiet eyes and with a mind at peace. Nothing but rest is there. There are no cries of pain and sorrow heard, for nothing there remains outside forgiveness. And the sights are gentle. Only happy sights and sounds can reach the mind that has forgiven itself.

The real world signifies the end of time, for its perception makes time purposeless. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Part II, Section 8,W-pII.8.1-2;4:3. See also ACIM Lesson 291 Insights.)

The belief in time is part of the ego thought system of separation. Guilt depends on time to make what happened in the past seem real. Time makes it seem that the past comes with us. We use the past to interpret what we perceive in the present. This makes the reality of the present invisible to us, for we have covered it with images from the past.

As we learn to forgive the past, to let it go, the basis for guilt fades. We begin to see through the shadows of guilt to the ever present changeless Light of Love. Love sees only innocence, for Love neither harms nor can be harmed. Love’s changelessness maintains its innocence.

The Holy Spirit is our Guide to forgiveness. He sees our projections of guilt and fear, but does not believe them. As we are willing to accept His vision in place of our perception, we learn that the past is gone. It cannot touch us, for it does not exist. As this becomes stronger in our awareness, the perception of the real world of happiness and peace replaces the ego’s world of guilt and fear.

Today we practice keeping our minds open to receive the Holy Spirit’s vision in place of our perceptions. It is the path to joy and peace.

Welcoming the Holy Spirit’s True Perception

All healing is release from the past. That is why the Holy Spirit is the only Healer. He teaches that the past does not exist, a fact which belongs to the sphere of knowledge, and which therefore no one in the world can know. It would indeed be impossible to be in the world with this knowledge [that the past does not exist]. For the mind that knows this unequivocally knows also it dwells in eternity, and utilizes no perception at all. It therefore does not consider where it is, because the concept “where” does not mean anything to it. It knows that it is everywhere, just as it has everything, and forever.

This is the miracle of creation; that it is one forever. Every miracle you offer to the Son of God is but the true perception of one aspect of the whole. Though every aspect is the whole, you cannot know this until you see that every aspect is the same, perceived in the same light and therefore one. Everyone seen without the past thus brings you nearer to the end of time by bringing healed and healing sight into the darkness, and enabling the world to see. For light must come into the darkened world to make Christ’s vision possible even here. Help Him to give His gift of light to all who think they wander in the darkness, and let Him gather them into His quiet sight that makes them one. (A Course in Miracles,T-13.VIII.1;5. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

Our belief in time makes knowledge of our unity in God’s Love impossible. Time is an attempt to introduce separation into eternity. In the world we bring our past experience into everything we perceive. No form in the world would have meaning to us without past experience.

From infancy we learn to interpret what forms mean. The process of giving meaning to form continues with our formal education and beyond through our day-to-day experiences. Yet all this learning simply reinforces the seeming reality of our perceptions, which are built upon the past.

The Holy Spirit teaches a different lesson. By teaching us to see the Light of Love everywhere, to see with Christ’s vision, we learn to see the oneness of Love. The perception of differences based on the past fades. More and more we see the sameness of Love’s oneness in all things, everywhere. The past loses its importance in our perception. Without the past our perception is healed and our mind becomes unified in the Love of God.

Today we practice accepting the Holy Spirit’s Light to bring clarity to our perceptions that we may have true perception.

How to Become Miracle Minded

Specialness is a lack of trust in anyone except yourself. Faith is invested in yourself alone.

What could the purpose of the body be but specialness? And it is this that makes it frail and helpless in its own defense. [The body] was conceived to make you frail and helpless. The goal of separation is its curse. Yet bodies have no goal. Purpose is of the mind. And minds can change as they desire. What [minds] are, and all their attributes, they cannot change. But what [mnds] hold as purpose can be changed, and body states must shift accordingly. Of itself the body can do nothing. See it as means to hurt, and it is hurt. See it as means to heal, and it is healed.

The purpose of attack is in the mind, and its effects are felt but where it is [in the mind]. Nor is the mind limited; so must it be that harmful purpose hurts the mind as one. Nothing could make less sense to specialness. Nothing could make more sense to miracles. For miracles are merely change of purpose from hurt to healing. This shift in purpose does “endanger” specialness, but only in the sense that all illusions are “threatened” by the truth. [Illusions] will not stand before [truth].

Only this is certain in this shifting world that has no meaning in reality: When peace is not with you entirely, and when you suffer pain of any kind, you have beheld some sin within your brother, and have rejoiced at what you thought was there. (A Course in Miracles,T-24.IV.1:1;2;3:5-11;5:2. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

Any lack of peace is a sure sign that we have seen guilt in a brother, which is a projection of guilt we see in ourselves. If we are mindful of any disturbance to our peace, we can use this disturbance to remind ourselves to ask for Holy Spirit’s help to forgive.

As we bring our perceptions to the Holy Spirit, with willingness to receive His replacement, we will learn to see past the ego’s images of separation to the eternal presence of limitless Love. We will see past perceptions of guilt to the recognition of the reality of innocence. This is how we give the body the purpose of healing in place of the ego’s purpose to harm. This is how we become miracle minded.

Accepting Love’s Attributes as Our Own

Love created me like Itself.

Holiness created me holy.
Kindness created me kind.
Helpfulness created me helpful.
Perfection created me perfect.

Any attribute which is in accord with God as He defines Himself is appropriate for use. We are trying today to undo your definition of God and replace it with His Own. We are also trying to emphasize that you are part of His definition of Himself.

…reach past all your images and preconceptions about yourself to the truth in you. If Love created you like Itself, this Self must be in you. And somewhere in your mind It is there for you to find.

You need to hear the truth about yourself as frequently as possible, because your mind is so preoccupied with false self-images.

This is the Voice for God, reminding you of your Father and of your Self. This is the Voice of truth, replacing everything that the ego tells you about yourself with the simple truth about the Son of God. You were created by Love like Itself. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 67,W-pI.67.2:3-9;3:3;5:2;6:2-4. See also ACIM Lesson 67 Insights.)

The image of a body that we identify as our self is a false image. It was not created by Love, Which has no form nor distinctions of any kind. Love is one and universal. If Love created us like Itself, then we all must be united as one in Love’s oneness. And we must have all of Love’s attributes. This only seems hard to believe because we are so heavily invested in being a separate, limited identity, defined by the body and what we believe the body experiences.

Today’s practice is helping us to identify with our the attributes of our true Self. As we accept this truth about ourselves, we become our brothers’ savior, for we demonstrate to our brothers that we are untied in Love. This is how we save the world from its misperceptions.

Welcoming Holy Spirit’s True Perception

Salvation is for the mind, and it is attained through peace. This [the mind] is the only thing that can be saved and [peace is] the only way to save it.

Everything you perceive as the outside world is merely your attempt to maintain your ego identification, for everyone believes that identification is salvation. …That is why you must realize that your hatred is in your mind and not outside it before you can get rid of it; and why you must get rid of [hatred] before you can perceive the world as it really is.

If you will recognize that all the attack you perceive is in your own mind and nowhere else, you will at last have [recognized] its source [is in the mind], and where it begins it must end. For in this same place also lies salvation. The altar of God where Christ abideth is there. …Christ has placed the Atonement on the altar [in your mind] for you. Bring your perceptions of the world to this altar, for it is the altar to truth. There you will see your vision changed, and there you will learn to see truly. From this place, where God and His Son dwell in peace and where you are welcome, you will look out in peace and behold the world truly. Yet to find the place [of peace], you must relinquish your investment in the world as you project it, allowing the Holy Spirit to extend the real world to you from the altar of God. (A Course in Miracles,T-12.III.5:1-2;7:5,10;10:1-4,5-9. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The peace of God is always in us because it is an attribute of our true Self, God’s Son. The world we perceive through our ego identification is a projection of our belief in separation. Though it appears to be outside us, the source of this projection remains in our mind. The source is our belief in separation and it is this belief that must be let go for us to experience the peace of God as our Reality.

Through the practice of bringing all our perceptions to the Holy Spirit in our minds we make way for the Holy Spirit to replace them with His true perception. True perception sees only the truth of Love. When we are not in peace, we can call upon the peace of God within to help us exchange our false perceptions for true perceptions from the Holy Spirit. This is how we bring salvation to our minds.
