How do we heal?

We heal by allowing our own mind to be healed by the Holy Spirit. As we accept the healing of our own thoughts of separation, healing just naturally extends to other minds. As the Teacher of Love teaches us to see past the ego’s barriers to Love, we develop the habit of accepting Love’s oneness and extending the truth of Love to every brother. We see that every brother is our one Self. Jesus tells us, “The miracle extends without your help, but you are needed that it can begin. Accept the miracle of healing, and it will go forth because of what it is. It is its nature to extend itself the instant it is born.” (1:2-4)

What is required for a healing?

Jesus tells us that “…if you are afraid of healing, then it cannot come through you. The only thing that is required for a healing is a lack of fear. The fearful are not healed, and cannot heal. (2:7-10)

What are we afraid of? We are afraid of losing our self-identity. We are afraid of losing the stories of separation we have made. We are afraid of truly joining with the one Mind of our Father because, when we take our false ideas to the Light of God, what is not true disappears from our sight. Loving without attack means accepting and extending Love’s oneness without trying to make its opposite — separation — real.

The good news is that the Holy Spirit needs only an instant of our willingness. Jesus tells us: “This does not mean the conflict must be gone forever from your mind to heal. For if it were, there were no need for healing then. But it does mean, if only for an instant, you love without attack. An instant is sufficient. Miracles wait not on time.” (2:10-14 italics added)

What does the holy instant carry with it?

The holy instant brings with it the miracle of changed perception. It brings the feeling of peace, comfort, well-being and the awareness that dreams of attack and lack of love are not what is eternally real about ourselves and every brother.

Jesus tells us: “What stands apart from you, when you accept the blessing that the holy instant brings? Be not afraid of blessing, for the One Who blesses you loves all the world, and leaves nothing within the world that could be feared.  …The holy instant’s radiance will light your eyes, and give them sight to see beyond all suffering and see Christ’s face instead. Healing replaces suffering. Who looks on one cannot perceive the other, for they cannot both be there. And what you see the world will witness, and will witness to.” (4:4-5, 6:5-8)

What is the true nature of every problem?

The truth is, every problem that we perceive in the world is not ‘out there.’ It is coming from our own confused and separated mind. In God there are no problems and we are eternally in the Mind of God right now, in the eternal present. When we are in a state of mind that perceives problems, we are hallucinating what is not there in truth. We are seeing through the ego eyes of separation, which blocks out the truth of Where we truly are — in Love, as Love.

Jesus explains it this way: “Problems are not specific but they take specific forms, and these specific shapes make up the world. And no one understands the nature of his problem. If he did, it would be there no more for him to see. Its very nature is that it is not. And thus, while he perceives it he can not perceive it as it is.” (8:1-5)

How do we deal with problems if we can not perceive them as they are?

Jesus answers this by helping us see that we cannot solve problems within the box of the ego thought system. Within the ego thought system’s split mind, fixing one problem just leads to an endless list of problem after problem until we come to a turning point. We then are willing to hand over every problem to the Holy Spirit, who brings us healed perception. Every healing ultimately leads us from perceiving separation to the return to oneness, which alone is the truth of What and Where we are.

In paragraph 10 we are told: “Leave, then, the transfer of your learning to the One Who really understands [healing’s] laws, and Who will guarantee that they remain unviolated and unlimited. Your part is merely to apply what He has taught you to yourself, and He will do the rest.” (10:1-2)

The Holy Spirit knows that the differences we see are not real. He knows that we are hallucinating a constantly changing world of separation that is not there in truth. As we learn to consistently step back from every perceived problem and open our minds to the peaceful Light of the Holy Spirit, we receive the blessings that the holy instant brings to our confused mind. “What occurred within the instant that Love entered in without attack will stay with you forever. Your healing will be one of its [Love’s] effects, as will your brother’s [healing]. Everywhere you go, will you behold [Love’s] multiplied effects.” (11:4-6)

We heal as our minds are healed. As we accept the holy instant, it replaces every perceived problem and the miracle of healing extends without our help. “God thanks you for your healing, for He knows it is a gift of Love unto His Son, and therefore is it given unto Him.” (11:9)
