Finding Peace Through Forgiveness

Forgiveness ends the dream of conflict here.

Conflict must be resolved. It cannot be evaded, set aside, denied, disguised, seen somewhere else, called by another name, or hidden by deceit of any kind, if it would be escaped. [Conflict] must be seen exactly as it is, where it is thought to be, in the reality which has been given it, and with the purpose that the mind accorded it. For only then are its defenses lifted, and the truth can shine upon it as it disappears.

Father, forgiveness is the light You chose to shine away all conflict and all doubt, and light the way for our return to You. No light but this can end our evil dream. No light but this can save the world. For this alone will never fail in anything, being Your gift to Your beloved Son. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 333, W-pII.333. See also ACIM Lesson 333 Insights.)

Forgiveness is the core lesson of A Course in Miracles. But it is not the forgiveness commonly practiced in the world. The ego teaches us that what we perceive in the world actually happened. While we hold this belief, true forgiveness is impossible. No one is willing to truly forgive a harm they believe is real. They may try ignore it, hide it in the corner of their mind or seek retribution, but never truly let it go.

True release can only occur when the unreality of a perceived harm is recognized. The ego would never show us unreality because it itself is unreal and if it is recognized as such, the ego would simply cease to seem to be.

To truly forgive, we need the help of the Holy Spirit. Forgiveness starts with acknowledging that we do believe something happened that harmed us in some way. It is this belief that must be let go for true forgiveness to set us free. To let our beliefs go, we need the Holy Spirit’s help to show us the truth that was hidden by the mistaken belief in what could never be real.

Our part of forgiveness is to acknowledge the need to forgive our perception and offer that perception to the Holy Spirit for His loving correction. The Holy Spirit sees what we believe but does not believe it. His part in the forgiveness process is to provide a bridge leading us out of our mistaken belief and show us that only Love is real. With His vision, we remember that nothing has harmed our true Self. Nothing has changed God’s Son, Who remains at one with God’s Love eternally.

Today we practice walking with the Holy Spirit with willingness to join with His vision of Christ. In this shared vision we will see the innocence of Love’s oneness instead of the guilt of separation. This is how we welcome miracles.

Replacing Vulnerability with Invulnerability

It is surely obvious that if you can be attacked you are not invulnerable. You see attack as a real threat. That is because you believe that you can really attack. And what would have effects through you must also have effects on you.

Because your attack thoughts will be projected, you will fear attack. And if you fear attack, you must believe that you are not invulnerable. Attack thoughts therefore make you vulnerable in your own mind, which is where the attack thoughts are. Attack thoughts and invulnerability cannot be accepted together. They contradict each other.

…vulnerability or invulnerability is the result of your own thoughts. Nothing except your thoughts can attack you. Nothing except your thoughts can make you think you are vulnerable. And nothing except your thoughts can prove to you this is not so. [A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 26, W-pI.26.1:1-4;2;4:1-4. See also ACIM Lesson 26 Insights.)

Believing we are a body and perceiving others as bodies is an attack on the truth of What we are as one Self, the Son of God. A body is a limit and believing in its seeming reality denies the unlimited Love we are. Perceiving ourselves as divorced from the strength of God’s Love leaves us feeling weak and vulnerable. This is an inevitable consequence of identifying with the ego.

By the grace of God, we can never be the ego because the ego does not exist in truth. If we accept the ego’s limits, we will feel justified in being concerned about the future, wary of attack and loss, and guilty about the “harm” we have done in the past. All this comes with accepting an image of ourself that could never be true.

The way to release ourselves from this false image is to offer all our perceptions to the Holy Spirit. He will show us that beyond appearances in the world is the oneness of Love that unites us with our brother and our Creator. He will teach us of the strength of Love that is already ours. He will replace our perception of vulnerability with His vision of our harmlessness and invulnerability as extensions of God’s Love.

Today we ask Holy Spirit to help us see as He sees — with the vision of Christ.

God Is Our Source and Our Life

God is with me. I live and move in Him.

God is with me. He is my Source of life, the life within, the air I breathe, the food by which I am sustained, the water which renews and cleanses me. He is my home, wherein I live and move; the Spirit which directs my actions, offers me Its Thoughts, and guarantees my safety from all pain. He covers me with kindness and with care, and holds in love the Son He shines upon, who also shines on Him. How still is he who knows the truth of what He speaks today!

Father, we have no words except Your Name upon our lips and in our minds, as we come quietly into Your Presence now, and ask to rest with You in peace a while. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 222, W-pII.222. See also ACIM Lesson 222 Insights.)

In the dream world, we need water, food, air and protection to “survive” — to keep the body alive. This lesson uses the metaphor of God providing all we need by listing these forms. But He did not make these things we think we need in the world.

God has given us all that He is. He is our Life. He is our sure protection. We need nothing but to accept What He has already given us. In this acceptance, we rest in His peace and unlimited Love. We have no need but this.

Today we remind ourselves frequently, “God is my Source and my Life. I am eternally safe in His Presence.”

The Choice for Peace and Happiness

This is the only thing that you need do for vision, happiness, release from pain and the complete escape from sin, all to be given you. Say only this, but mean it with no reservations, for here the power of salvation lies:

I am responsible for what I see.
I choose the feelings I experience, and I decide upon the goal I would achieve.
And everything that seems to happen to me I ask for, and receive as I have asked.

Deceive yourself no longer that you are helpless in the face of what is done to you. Acknowledge but that you have been mistaken, and all effects of your mistakes will disappear.

It is impossible the Son of God be merely driven by events outside of him. It is impossible that happenings that come to him were not his choice. His power of decision is the determiner of every situation in which he seems to find himself by chance or accident. No accident nor chance is possible within the universe as God created it, outside of which is nothing. Suffer, and you decided sin was your goal. Be happy, and you gave the power of decision to Him Who must decide for God for you. (A Course in Miracles, T-21.II.2:1-3:6. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The ego is dedicated to making it appear that we are victims of forces from an outside world over which we have no control. As long as we believe this we imprison ourselves in a loveless world, alone, weak, fearful and guilty. And the ego smiles with satisfaction. But it is our choice to believe the ego. We have another choice.

We can choose to let the Holy Spirit judge all things on our behalf, instead of giving our belief and power to the ego. The Holy Spirit chooses for our freedom from limitation. His choice for us is always the truth: That we are whole, complete and safe in the oneness of Love. Here harm is impossible and only joy and peace exist. The Holy Spirit knows that there is nothing outside of Love, for only Love is real. When we choose the Holy Spirit to decide on our behalf, we remember our true Self. We remember God. We remember we are in Heaven now.

We dedicate today to accepting Holy Spirit’s judgment in every moment.

Opportunities to Heal with Love

Miracles are merely the translation of denial into truth. If to love oneself is to heal oneself, those who are sick do not love themselves. Therefore, they are asking for the love that would heal them, but which they are denying to themselves. If they knew the truth about themselves they could not be sick. The task of the miracle worker thus becomes to deny the denial of truth. The sick must heal themselves, for the truth is in them. Yet having obscured it, the light in another mind must shine into theirs because that light is theirs.

The light in them shines as brightly regardless of the density of the fog that obscures it. …To perceive the healing of your brother as the healing of yourself is thus the way to remember God.

Perceive in sickness but another call for love, and offer your brother what he believes he cannot offer himself. Whatever the sickness, there is but one remedy. You will be made whole as you make whole, for to perceive in sickness the appeal for health is to recognize in hatred the call for love. And to give a brother what he really wants is to offer it unto yourself, for your Father wills you to know your brother as yourself. Answer his call for love, and yours is answered. Healing is the Love of Christ for His Father and for Himself. (A Course in Miracles, T-12.II.1;2:1,9;3. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

Sickness is a call for Love just as anger, hatred, fear and guilt are calls for Love. Any appearance that does not evoke a response of Love in us is our own call for Love. As we learn to let the Holy Spirit judge all appearances on our behalf, He teaches us to recognize every call for Love and answer with Love. With this practice, we learn that Love is not only in us, but It is What we are. We join with the Holy Spirit in the healing of the world by learning to look past our interpretations of appearances to the changeless unity of Love.

When we accepted the ego’s belief in separation, we made a world of images that we believe are separate from us. When we learn to overlook the appearance of separation with the Holy Spirit’s vision, we see the Love that is our brother. Because that Love is all that is real, we learn of the Love we are. Thus our own healing is served each time we answer a brother’s call for Love with Love. We join with the Holy Spirit in saving the world from the denial of Love. We remember God when we remember we are Love and nothing else.

How to Have a Day of Peace

I rest in God.

We ask for rest today, and quietness unshaken by the world’s appearances. We ask for peace and stillness, in the midst of all the turmoil born of clashing dreams. We ask for safety and for happiness, although we seem to look on danger and on sorrow.

This is the day of peace. You rest in God, and while the world is torn by winds of hate your rest remains completely undisturbed. Yours is the rest of truth. Appearances cannot intrude on you. You call to all to join you in your rest, and they will hear and come to you because you rest in God. They will not hear another voice than yours because you gave your voice to God, and now you rest in Him and let Him speak through you.

You rest within the peace of God today, and call upon your brothers from your rest to draw them to their rest, along with you. You will be faithful to your trust today, forgetting no one, bringing everyone into the boundless circle of your peace, the holy sanctuary where you rest.

Time is not the guardian of what we give today. We give to those unborn and those passed by, to every Thought of God, and to the Mind in which these Thoughts were born and where they rest. And we remind them of their resting place each time we tell ourselves, “I rest in God.” (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 109, W-pI.109.1:1-3;4;8:1-2;9:4-6. See also ACIM Lesson 109 Insights.)

The appearances of the world represent the ego belief in separation. They are illusions symbolizing the belief that it is possible to be without Love. These illusions appear to conflict with each other and make a world of chaos. But appearances by definition are not real. Only our belief makes an appearance seem real.

When we choose to accept that we rest in the oneness of God’s Love, there is no “other” to perceive. We rest in Love, which never changes. Its changelessness brings with it perfect safety and peace. By affirming “I rest in God,” we are claiming the one Self God created one with Him. We overlook the appearances of the world to see the truth of our unity with every brother in God’s Love.

We welcome every brother to join us as we rest in God. A brother we recognize as part of us does not appear as a threat to our peace. Rather we recognize him as part of our peace which is completed by his inclusion. As we learn to overlook all appearances, our rest is complete, for no-one is excluded from the Love we share with God.

Undoing Our Belief in Sin (Separation)

My sinlessness protects me from all harm.

My sinlessness ensures me perfect peace, eternal safety, everlasting love, freedom forever from all thought of loss; complete deliverance from suffering. And only happiness can be my state, for only happiness is given me. What must I do to know all this is mine? I must accept Atonement for myself, and nothing more. God has already done all things that need be done. And I must learn I need do nothing of myself, for I need but accept my Self, my sinlessness, created for me, now already mine, to feel God’s Love protecting me from harm, to understand my Father loves His Son; to know I am the Son my Father loves.

You Who created me in sinlessness are not mistaken about what I am. I was mistaken when I thought I sinned, but I accept Atonement for myself. Father, my dream is ended now. Amen. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 337, W-pII.337. See also ACIM Lesson 337 Insights.)

Sin is belief in being separate and denies the oneness of Love. Sinlessness accepts Love’s oneness as our own. We accept the Atonement by letting go or undoing our belief in separation. Separation could never actually occur, but our belief in it gives it reality in our perception. In truth, we are still as God created us, at one with Him and His Son.

The changelessness of Love makes harm and separation impossible. It is this that guarantees our sinlessness. It guarantees that we have God’s peace and joy eternally, ensured by God in our creation. To claim our sinlessness, we need only accept what we already have and are.

The Holy Spirit’s function is to teach us to recognize mistaken beliefs in being separate and let them go. With His help, we will accept Atonement for ourself and leave the ego in the nothingness from which it came.
