Fulfilling Our Function to Extend God’s Love

My only function is the one God gave me.

The idea for today reaffirms your commitment to salvation. ²It also reminds you that you have no function other than that. ³Both these thoughts are obviously necessary for a total commitment. ⁴Salvation cannot be the only purpose you hold while you still cherish others. ⁵The full acceptance of salvation as your only function necessarily entails two phases; the recognition of salvation as your function, and the relinquishment of all the other goals you have invented for yourself.

³This is the only way in which you can find peace of mind.

²Today’s idea offers you escape from all your perceived difficulties. ³It places the key to the door of peace, which you have closed upon yourself, in your own hands. ⁴It gives you the answer to all the searching you have done since time began.

…close your eyes, repeat the idea to yourself once again, and watch your mind carefully to catch whatever thoughts cross it. ³At first, make no attempt to concentrate only on thoughts related to the idea for the day. ⁴Rather, try to uncover each thought that arises to interfere with it. ⁵Note each one as it comes to you, with as little involvement or concern as possible, dismissing each one by telling yourself:

⁶This thought reflects a goal that is preventing me from accepting my only function.

⁴On this clean slate let my true function be written for me.

⁵You need not use these exact words, but try to get the sense of being willing to have your illusions of purpose be replaced by truth.”

As long as we let ego thoughts run rampant in our unconscious mind, we will remain imprisoned in the thought system that denies our Identity as God’s Son. We will seem to be at the mercy of forces beyond our control. But we have been given a way to unlock the prison door.

We accept the function God gave us by paying attention to the thoughts that cross our mind. By making them conscious, we give ourselves the opportunity to dismiss the thoughts that are not loving. This makes way for our real Thoughts — the thoughts which reflect our function of extending God’s Love — to take their natural place. We are free to fulfill our only function as extensions of God’s Love.

The Path of Return to Love

Without forgiveness I will still be blind.

Sin is the symbol of attack. ²Behold it anywhere, and I will suffer. ³For forgiveness is the only means whereby Christ’s vision comes to me. ⁴Let me accept what His sight shows me as the simple truth, and I am healed completely. ⁵Brother, come and let me look on you. ⁶Your loveliness reflects my own. ⁷Your sinlessness is mine. ⁸You stand forgiven, and I stand with you.

So would I look on everyone today. ²My brothers are Your Sons. ³Your Fatherhood created them, and gave them all to me as part of You, and my own Self as well. ⁴Today I honor You through them, and thus I hope this day to recognize my Self. Judgment maintains a wall that ‘protects’ us from recognition of our unity with our brothers and our Father in His Love. It keeps us locked in the dream of isolation and conflict. It is a denial of our Identity as God’s Son.

Today we ask the Holy Spirit to give us His strength to help us lay down our judgments. We want to recognize the Love that is the truth in everyone, including our true Self. Forgiveness accepts our Father’s gift of limitless peace and Love. It is the means to return to our Home in Love.

We Are Always in the Presence of Love

Your peace is with me, Father. I am safe.

Your peace surrounds me, Father. ²Where I go, Your peace goes there with me. ³It sheds its light on everyone I meet. ⁴I bring it to the desolate and lonely and afraid. ⁵I give Your peace to those who suffer pain, or grieve for loss, or think they are bereft of hope and happiness. ⁶Send them to me, my Father. ⁷Let me bring Your peace with me. ⁸For I would save Your Son, as is Your Will, that I may come to recognize my Self.

And so we go in peace. ²To all the world we give the message that we have received. ³And thus we come to hear the Voice for God, Who speaks to us as we relate His Word; Whose Love we recognize because we share the Word that He has given unto us. In truth we live in peace. It is our natural state. It goes with us wherever we go. No matter what we seem to experience in the would, the peace of God is with us.

We accept His peace by offering peace to the world. Where we see conflict, we remember that beyond the clashing images is the changeless Love of God that cannot be disturbed. Where we see sadness, we remember that we are never alone.

We are always in the Presence of our Creator. His joy is our own in truth. Where we see fear, we remember we are united with all in the oneness of God’s Love.

Let Love Be Our Highest Priority

If you cannot hear the Voice for God, it is because you do not choose to listen. ²That you do listen to the voice of your ego is demonstrated by your attitudes, your feelings and your behavior.

²When your mood tells you that you have chosen wrongly, and this is so whenever you are not joyous, then know this need not be. ³In every case you have thought wrongly about some brother God created, and are perceiving images your ego makes in a darkened glass. ⁴Think honestly what you have thought that God would not have thought, and what you have not thought that God would have you think.

The habit of engaging with God and His creations is easily made if you actively refuse to let your mind slip away.

²There is no limit to the power of a Son of God, but he can limit the expression of his power as much as he chooses. ³Your mind and mine can unite in shining your ego away, releasing the strength of God into everything you think and do.

⁴[God’s] Mind shone on you in your creation and brought your mind into being. ⁵His Mind still shines on you and must shine through you. ⁶Your ego cannot prevent Him from shining on you, but it can prevent you from letting Him shine through you.

If we are not at peace and supremely happy, then we have chosen against our Creator. We have chosen against our true Self. It is God’s Will that we share His peace, His joy and Love, without limit.

Our choice to identify with the ego keeps us mired in a dream of fear and guilt. It is a dream that denies the strength God has given all of His Creation. Whenever we feel guilt or fear, we need to affirm this need not be.

We can choose instead to accept the Love that is our birthright. Our innate nature is to be Love, joined with everyone in the eternal extension of Love. This joining occurs automatically when we forgive the barriers we have erected to put limits on Love. Today we can let Love be our highest priority.

Bringing Love to the World

It is your forgiveness that will bring the world of darkness to the light. ²It is your forgiveness that lets you recognize the light in which you see. ³Forgiveness is the demonstration that you are the light of the world. ⁴Through your forgiveness does the truth about yourself return to your memory. ⁵Therefore, in your forgiveness lies your salvation.

Illusions about yourself and the world are one. ²That is why all forgiveness is a gift to yourself. ³Your goal is to find out who you are, having denied your Identity by attacking creation and its Creator. ⁴Now you are learning how to remember the truth. ⁵For this attack must be replaced by forgiveness, so that thoughts of life may replace thoughts of death.

Remember that in every attack you call upon your own weakness, while each time you forgive you call upon the strength of Christ in you. ²Do you not then begin to understand what forgiveness will do for you? ³It will remove all sense of weakness, strain and fatigue from your mind. ⁴It will take away all fear and guilt and pain. ⁵It will restore the invulnerability and power God gave His Son to your awareness.

²Forgiveness is my function as the light of the world.

Judgment is the source of all conflict and sense of lack of Love in the world. Forgiveness is the key to peace. It is the one thought that will free us from all pain and suffering, all fear and guilt. It lets awareness of the Love we are return to our mind.

We do not need to seek for Love. We only need to forgive the barriers we have built against It by wanting to have a unique identity. Today we ask the strength of Christ within to help us bring the healing Light of Love to the world.

Making Decisions That Lead to Peace

Decisions are continuous. ²You do not always know when you are making them. ³But with a little practice with the ones you recognize, a set begins to form which sees you through the rest. ⁴It is not wise to let yourself become preoccupied with every step you take. ⁵The proper set, adopted consciously each time you wake, will put you well ahead. ⁶And if you find resistance strong and dedication weak, you are not ready. ⁷Do not fight yourself. ⁸But think about the kind of day you want, and tell yourself there is a way in which this very day can happen just like that. ⁹Then try again to have the day you want.

The outlook starts with this:

²Today I will make no decisions by myself.

³This means that you are choosing not to be the judge of what to do. ⁴But it must also mean you will not judge the situations where you will be called upon to make response. ⁵For if you judge them, you have set the rules for how you should react to them. ⁶And then another answer cannot but produce confusion and uncertainty and fear.

This is your major problem now. ²You still make up your mind, and then decide to ask what you should do.

Throughout the day, at any time you think of it and have a quiet moment for reflection, tell yourself again the kind of day you want; the feelings you would have, the things you want to happen to you, and the things you would experience, and say:

²If I make no decisions by myself, this is the day that will be given me.” (A Course in Miracles, T-30.I.1:1–3:2;4:1-2 See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

The decisions we make, consciously or not, determine what we experience. If we identify with the ego, we make decisions that support our wish for specialness. We experience being separate and alone, vulnerable to forces over which we have no control.

But we can choose the Holy Spirit as our advisor in our decision-making. This takes a willingness to pause and step back from our knee jerk responses to welcome the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

If we are willing to acknowledge that we do not know what anything means, our mind is open to receive Christ’s vision. With this perspective, our decisions will lead to the experience of Love’s peace and happiness.

Our Holiness Unites Us with Everyone

Eternal holiness abides in me.

My holiness is far beyond my own ability to understand or know. ²Yet God, my Father, Who created it, acknowledges my holiness as His. ³Our Will, together, understands it. ⁴And Our Will, together, knows that it is so.

Father, my holiness is not of me. ²It is not mine to be destroyed by sin. ³It is not mine to suffer from attack. ⁴Illusions can obscure it, but can not put out its radiance, nor dim its light. ⁵It stands forever perfect and untouched. ⁶In it are all things healed, for they remain as You created them. ⁷And I can know my holiness. ⁸For Holiness Itself created me, and I can know my Source because it is Your Will that You be known. The holiness of our true Self cannot be altered because it remains one with the holiness of our Father, the Source of Holiness. But in our dreams of being a separate individual in a world of differences, we cannot comprehend our holiness. Its meaning is buried beneath our misperception of our identity.

As we learn to accept our Identity as an extension of God’s Love, forever united with Him, we will know that our holiness is part of His Holiness. It is His Will that we know the holiness that lives eternally in us, His Son. And we will see the holiness in everyone.
