The Gifts of Forgiveness

Open your eyes today and look upon a happy world of safety and of peace. Forgiveness is the means by which it comes to take the place of hell. In quietness it rises up to greet your open eyes, and fill your heart with deep tranquility as ancient truths, forever newly born, arise in your awareness. What you will remember then can never be described. Yet your forgiveness offers it to you.

Today it will be given you to feel the peace forgiveness offers, and the joy the lifting of the veil holds out to you. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 122, W-pI.122.8;11:2. See also ACIM Lesson 122 Insights.)

To forgive the world we need to shift our attention from what the body’s eyes show us to the vision of the Holy Spirit. This is a shift from external “seeing” to inner vision in our minds. It is a shift from being ego directed to being guided by the Holy Spirit. As we take each of our perceptions in the world to the Holy Spirit with willingness to receive His vision, we learn to let go of belief in false images and accept the unity of Love that joins us with all that is real. This is true forgiveness.

As we open to true forgiveness, the Light of Love, which is ever present, shines through the fading shadows of the ego’s false images. This Light brings with It peace and happiness that are beyond words to describe. Our experience of the world shifts from pervading fear and guilt to a happy world of safety and of peace.

We Have All the Help We Need

How simply and how easily does time slip by for the teacher of God who has accepted His protection! All that he did before in the name of safety no longer interests him. For he is safe, and knows it to be so. He has a Guide Who will not fail. He need make no distinctions among the problems he perceives, for He to Whom he turns with all of them recognizes no order of difficulty in resolving them. He is as safe in the present as he was before illusions were accepted into his mind, and as he will be when he has let them go. There is no difference in his state at different times and different places, because they are all one to God. This is his safety. And he has no need for more than this.” (A Course in Miracles, M-16.7)

The ego is incapable of providing meaningful help. The best it can do is provide an illusion that seems to be more acceptable as a substitute for an appearance we don’t like — a seeming problem. This is about as helpful as moving the deck chairs on the sinking Titanic.

But we have a Guide in our minds Who is not deceived by the ego’s illusions. This Guide knows we are eternally safe in the changeless Presence of Love. This Guide will always lead us past false images to the recognition of what is true and real. The Help we need leads us gently and lovingly to release the mistaken ideas of separation that bring us pain, guilt, fear and uncertainty.

As we are willing to follow this Guide, the uncertainty of the dream fades and the certainty of our perfect safety, limitless joy and unending Love becomes our reality. We have all the Help we need to find the way to our Home in Love.

Accepting Holy Spirit’s Help

Perception is not an attribute of God. His is the realm of knowledge. Yet He has created the Holy Spirit as the Mediator between perception and knowledge. Without this link with God, perception would have replaced knowledge forever in your mind. With this link with God, perception will become so changed and purified that it will lead to knowledge. That is [perception’s] function as the Holy Spirit sees it. Therefore, that is its function in truth.

In God you cannot see. Perception has no function in God, and does not exist. Yet in salvation, which is the undoing of what never was, perception has a mighty purpose. Made by the Son of God for an unholy purpose, [perception] must become the means for the restoration of his holiness to his awareness. Perception has no meaning. Yet does the Holy Spirit give it a meaning very close to God’s. Healed perception becomes the means by which the Son of God forgives his brother, and thus forgives himself. It is the Holy Spirit That purifies our perception so it leads to knowledge. As we join with the Holy Spirit, He will show us the true meaning behind every circumstance. As we join with Holy Spirit, our perceptions are healed. With Holy Spirit we are able to see past ego’s false ideas to see the Love behind all images of separation.

The Holy Spirit teaches forgiveness and sees all loveless behavior as calls for Love. With Holy Spirit’s help we let go of the ego’s false ideas and remember that only Love is real. We find peace and happiness at last and extend it to the world.
