Seeing Past Fear to Our Reality as Love

Do you not see the opposite of frailty and weakness is sinlessness? Innocence is strength, and nothing else is strong. The sinless cannot fear, for sin of any kind is weakness.

You will believe that everything you use for sin can hurt you and become your enemy.… It is as certain you will fear what you attack as it is sure that you will love what you perceive as sinless [innocent]. He walks in peace who travels sinlessly along the way love shows him. For love walks with him there, protecting him from fear. And he will see only the sinless, who can not attack.

Walk you in glory, with your head held high, and fear no evil. The innocent are safe because they share their innocence. Nothing they see is harmful, for their awareness of the truth releases everything from the illusion of harmfulness. And what seemed harmful now stands shining in their innocence, released from sin and fear and happily returned to love.

In kind forgiveness will the world sparkle and shine, and everything you once thought sinful now will be reinterpreted as part of Heaven. (A Course in Miracles, T-23.in.1:1-3;2:2,4-6;3:1-4. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

The ego sees everything in the world as potentially harmful. Bodies can attack other bodies or say things that harm the identity of others. The earth can crumble beneath our feet or erupt with fire and ash. The world the ego sees needs constant defense to protect the identity we associate with the body.

This identity is weak because it denies the reality of our true Identity in changeless Love. It is Love’s changelessness that makes it invulnerable to any harm. Our true Identity shares this invulnerability. Love is our strength. The appearance of weakness comes when we identity with a loveless illusion of what we are.

Forgiveness, letting go of belief in illusions, returns us to the awareness of the strength of the Love we are. When we forgive, we see past the images of harm projected by the ego. We see that only Love is real. We remember we are in Heaven now.

Finding Our Strength

It is important to remember that miracles and vision necessarily go together. This needs repeating, and frequent repeating. It is a central idea in your new thought system, and the perception that it produces. The miracle is always there. Its presence is not caused by your vision; its absence is not the result of your failure to see. It is only your awareness of miracles that is affected. You will see them in the light; you will not see them in the dark.

Miracles are seen in light.
The body’s eyes do not perceive the light.
But I am not a body. What am I?

The question with which this statement ends is needed for our exercises today. What you think you are is a belief to be undone. But what you really are must be revealed to you. The belief you are a body calls for correction, being a mistake. The truth of what you are calls on the strength in you to bring to your awareness what the mistake conceals.

Remember that all sense of weakness is associated with the belief you are a body, a belief that is mistaken and deserves no faith.

Miracles are seen in the Light of Love. The body is an image that denies the unity of Love and therefore cannot see Love’s Light. Vision is seen in our mind, which is joined with the Mind of God. This is the vision that sees the Light of Love and all Its miracles.

Here we are being taught that to know our true strength and be aware of the miracles of Love, we need to withdraw our belief that we are a body. We are not a body. We are Spirit, united eternally with our Creator. Here is our source of strength. Here is the vision that shows us the Light of Love in every brother.

God’s Thoughts are His extensions of Love, which are the truth in everyone, everywhere. As we withdraw our identification with the body, we make way for the Light to show us What we are in truth. Here we find our strength and our peace. We remember we are Love and nothing else. We are filled with gratitude for God’s gifts.

Learning to Live in the Light of Love

Holding grievances is an attack on God’s plan for salvation. Holding grievances is an attempt to prove that God’s plan for salvation will not work. Yet only His plan will work. By holding grievances, I am therefore excluding my only hope of salvation from my awareness. I would no longer defeat my own best interests in this insane way. I would accept God’s plan for salvation, and be happy.

I am choosing between misperception and salvation as I look on this.
If I see grounds for grievances in this, I will not see the grounds for my salvation.
This calls for salvation, not attack. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 86, W-pI.86.3;4:2-4. See also ACIM Lesson 86 Insights.)

Salvation is the means to be saved from harm. We harm ourselves when we believe we are separated from the Love, peace and joy of God. In truth, this could never be. But in a dream of separation it seems that harm is all around us. We see images of people and things outside us that could at the very least be cause for unhappiness or, at worst, cause our death. Nothing in this dream world provides a means for release from this constant appearance of danger.

A grievance is a judgment against someone or something that we perceive as harmful. This grievance keeps us focused on the images of the dream and blocks our awareness of the truth of our eternal safety in Love.

God’s plan for our release from this fearful perception is brought to us through His Voice. If we choose the Holy Spirit as our Guide for all our perceptions, He will show us that they are based on a mistaken belief that we are separate. And He will show us that what lies beyond the mistaken perception is the changeless gift of God’s Love, peace and joy.

Every day we have the opportunity to choose against believing in our misperceptions and welcome the Holy Spirit’s vision of the truth. This is the choice to leave the ego’s darkness and live in the Light of Love.

Remembering God’s Love Is Ours

Your holiness is the answer to every question that was ever asked, is being asked now, or will be asked in the future. Your holiness means the end of guilt, and therefore the end of hell. Your holiness is the salvation of the world, and your own. How could you to whom your holiness belongs be excluded from [the salvation of the world]? God does not know unholiness. Can it be He does not know His Son?

…search out your unloving thoughts in whatever form they appear; uneasiness, depression, anger, fear, worry, attack, insecurity and so on. Whatever form they take, they are unloving and therefore fearful. And so it is from them that you need to be saved.

My unloving thoughts about _____ are keeping me in hell.

We are holy because our true Self is one with God and shares His holiness. This means our true Self is one with God’s Love, peace and joy. This is our inheritance. This is the truth in us.

If we have any thoughts that reflect anything but perfect Love and peace, and joy beyond description, we are thinking unloving thoughts. They are thoughts of being separated from the truth and therefore deny our unity with Love.

Our salvation from these unloving thoughts comes as we accept the truth of What we are. Our true Self sees only Love and recognizes the effects of unloving thoughts as calls for Love. If we feel sad, fearful or guilty, we are calling for Love. We have forgotten that God’s Love is already ours.

This is why it is important to frequently remind ourselves that our holiness, our oneness with God’s Love, is our salvation. Remembering that we share God’s holiness frees us from the mistaken thoughts reflecting belief that we are separate. We are free because we were created holy. In truth we are Love and nothing else.

Remembering Our Unity in Love

Correction is for all who cannot see. To open the eyes of the blind is the Holy Spirit’s mission, for He knows that they have not lost their vision, but merely sleep. He would awaken them from the sleep of forgetting to the remembering of God. Christ’s eyes are open, and He will look upon whatever you see with love if you accept His vision as yours. The Holy Spirit keeps the vision of Christ for every Son of God who sleeps. In His sight the Son of God is perfect, and He longs to share His vision with you.

Every child of God is one in Christ, for his being is in Christ as Christ’s is in God. Christ’s Love for you is His Love for His Father, which He knows because He knows His Father’s Love for Him. When the Holy Spirit has at last led you to Christ at the altar to His Father, perception fuses into knowledge because perception has become so holy that its transfer to holiness is merely its natural extension. Love transfers to love without any interference, for the two are one. As you perceive more and more common elements in all situations, the transfer of training under the Holy Spirit’s guidance increases and becomes generalized. Gradually you learn to apply it to everyone and everything, for its applicability is universal. When this has been accomplished, perception and knowledge have become so similar that they share the unification of the laws of God.

By choosing to believe in separation, we chose to forget our Identity in God’s perfection. Because God is one, perception of differences, which is not seeing oneness, makes us blind to the truth of our Self as the Son of God.

Though we have forgotten our one Self, the Holy Spirit remembers for us. It is His function to correct our mistaken perception by reminding us that we remain as God created us, whole, complete and perfect. The Holy Spirit reminds us by sharing His vision of the truth in us.

The more we practice opening our minds to the Holy Spirit’s vision, the less we are invested in the separating images of the world. We begin to recognize the truth that is behind all the false images of the ego. More and more we see the unity of Love shining through the ego’s dark shadows.

When forgiveness is complete, we have relinquished our investment in the ego. We now see through the unified vision of the Holy Spirit. This unified perception naturally transfers to the knowledge of our oneness in Love. It is this that the Holy Spirit is leading us to.

“I am in need of nothing but the truth.”

“I sought for many things, and found despair. Now do I seek but one, for in that one is all I need, and only what I need. All that I sought before I needed not, and did not even want. My only need I did not recognize. But now I see that I need only truth. In that all needs are satisfied, all cravings end, all hopes are finally fulfilled and dreams are gone. Now have I everything that I could need. Now have I everything that I could want. And now at last I find myself at peace.

The world we experience of frustration, anger, fear, guilt, sadness and hopelessness is of our own making. It is the effect of denying the one gift given us by our Creator Who gave us all that He is, which is all that is real. We suffer from believing in illusions that anything other than the oneness of Love is real.

Because of this mistaken belief, our only need now is to accept the truth that we remain as Love created us. Here we remember the peace that has always been ours. We need seek for nothing else. This is all we really want.

Remembering Our True Self

Reality observes the laws of God, and not the rules you set. It is His laws that guarantee your safety. All illusions that you believe about yourself obey no laws. …[Illusions] must be neither cherished nor attacked, but merely looked upon as children’s toys without a single meaning of their own. See one [meaning] in them and you will see them all. See [no meaning] in them and they will touch you not.

Appearances deceive because they are appearances and not reality. Dwell not on them in any form. They but obscure reality, and they bring fear because they hide the truth. Do not attack what you have made to let you be deceived, for thus you prove that you have been deceived. Attack has power to make illusions [seem] real. Yet what it makes is nothing. Who could be made fearful by a power that can have no real effects at all? …God’s Son needs no defense against his dreams. His idols do not threaten him at all. His one mistake is that he thinks them real. What can the power of illusions do?

Salvation is a paradox indeed! What could it be except a happy dream? [Salvation] asks you but that you forgive all things that no one ever did; to overlook what is not there, and not to look upon the unreal as reality. You are but asked to let your will be done, and seek no longer for the things you do not want. And you are asked to let yourself be free of all the dreams of what you never were, and seek no more to substitute the strength of idle wishes for the Will of God. The Will of our true Self is the Will of God. The dream of illusions, of myriad idols that hide the truth, has no effect on our true Self. Only our belief in the dream’s illusions makes them seem to have effects at all. Yet illusions cannot change Reality. Salvation comes with the willingness to let go of illusions in the dream.

We will willingly let illusions go when we recognize that they offer us nothing we really want. We want the peace of God. We want to know the Love of God as ours. We want to experience the joy of extending God’s Love without limit. This is our reality. As we let go or overlook illusions because we recognize they are really nothing, we remember our true Self, united with God.
