Remembering God Is in Us

I will not fear to look within today.

Within me is eternal innocence, because it is God’s Will that it be there forever and forever. I, His Son, whose will is limitless as is His Own, can will no change in this. For to deny my Father’s Will is to deny my own. To look within is but to find my will as God created it, and as it is. I fear to look within because I think I made another will that is not true, and made it real. Yet it has no effects. Within me is the Holiness of God. Within me is the memory of Him.

The step I take today, my Father, is my sure release from idle dreams of sin. Your altar stands serene and undefiled. It is the holy altar to my Self, and there I find my true Identity. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 309, W-pII.309. See also ACIM Lesson 309 Insights.)

Here is an exercise that can help us remember that God is in us and we share God’s Will.

Pause and quiet your mind. Think of someone you love — a spouse, child, sibling, close friend…

Mentally say, “I see the Holiness of God in you.” Pause to absorb the feeling that comes as you accept this idea…

You may find it helpful to repeat the idea.…

Then think another person you are acquainted with and mentally say, “I see the Holiness of God in you.” Pause to let this way of seeing strengthen

Repeat the idea as guided.…

Then pick someone you think of as an adversary and say, “I see the Holiness of God in you.” Again, allow time for this way of seeing strengthen for you…

This practice will help us remember that God is in us and His Will is ours.

Remembering Our Eternal Connection with God

The Will of the Father and of the Son are One, by Their extension. Their extension is the result of Their Oneness, holding Their unity together by extending Their joint Will. This is perfect creation by the perfectly created, in union with the perfect Creator. The Father [Love] must give fatherhood [ability to extend Love] to His Son, because His Own Fatherhood [Love] must be extended outward. You who belong in God have the holy function of extending His Fatherhood by placing no limits upon [Love’s extension]. Let the Holy Spirit teach you how to do this, for you can know what it means only of God Himself.

When you meet anyone, remember it is a holy encounter. As you see him you will see yourself. As you treat him you will treat yourself. As you think of him you will think of yourself. Never forget this, for in him you will find yourself or lose yourself. Whenever two Sons of God meet, they are given another chance at salvation. Do not leave anyone without giving salvation to him and receiving it yourself. For I am always there with you, in remembrance of you [Love]. (A Course in Miracles, T-8.III.3-4. Our unbreakable link with God is His Will that we remain united with Him in His eternal extension of Love. To maintain this unity, our true Self, His Son, also extends Love. We claim and maintain our Inheritance by giving Love to all. If we try to keep Love for ourself alone, we lose It because we are denying What It is.

Every encounter with a brother has the potential to be holy if we use it to join with the Love he is. This simultaneously accepts the Love we are. The truth in our brother and ourself is one and the same.

If we see our brother as limited to a body and not one with us, we are disowning our inheritance. We are unaware of the Love we are. The sense of lack this induces causes us to search for the Love we believe we have lost. If we choose the ego as our guide, we will be led to search for Love where It cannot be found. The world will seem to be a place of loneliness, lack and fear of loss.

But we can choose another Guide Who remembers for us our unbreakable connection with our Creator. He will guide us out of the wilderness of lovelessness to return to accepting our eternal unity with every brother in Love. He will teach us how to make every encounter holy.

Seeing with the Light of Love

My grievances hide the light of the world in me.

My grievances show me what is not there, and hide from me what I [my true Self] would see. Recognizing this, what do I want my griev­ances for? They keep me in darkness and hide the light. Griev­ances and light cannot go together, but light and vision must be joined for me to see. To see, I must lay grievances aside.

Today I will recognize where my salvation is. It is in me because its Source is there. It has not left its Source, and so it cannot have left my mind. I will not look for it outside myself. It is not found outside and then brought in. But from within me it will reach beyond, and everything I see will but reflect the light that shines in me and in itself. Salvation is release from the limitations of the ego and belief in separation. Only if separation were real could grievances be justified. Loss and harm are impossible in the oneness of Love. The body is the ego’s idol, a substitute image that hides the Self created by God. The body appears to be capable of being harmed or causing harm, of winning or losing. It is the seat of guilt, shame and fear.

In the Light of Love, Christ’s vision sees past the ego’s loveless images to the presence of Love in everyone. Grievances fade away in the presence of Love’s Light. Anything that disturbs our peace is a sign that we are holding a grievance in our mind. We are believing separation from God is real.

We free ourselves from this false belief by giving priority to Christ’s vision in our mind. His vision shows us that only Love is real. The Love that is our true Self is always at peace and wholly joyous in the eternal extension of Love to Itself. We dedicate today to letting Love’s vision show us the way to freedom from limitation and to accept the one Self we share with all our brothers.

Expressing Willingness to Awaken

I give my life to God to guide today.

Father, I give You all my thoughts today. I would have none of mine. In place of them, give me Your Own. I give You all my acts as well, that I may do Your Will instead of seeking goals which cannot be obtained, and wasting time in vain imaginings. Today I come to You. I will step back and merely follow You. Be You the Guide, and I the follower who questions not the wisdom of the Infinite, nor Love whose tenderness I cannot comprehend, but which is yet Your perfect gift to me.

Today we have one Guide to lead us on. And as we walk together, we will give this day to Him with no reserve at all. This is His day. And so it is a day of countless gifts and mercies unto us. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 233, W-pII.233. See also ACIM Lesson 233 Insights.)

This daily dedication to give all our thoughts and actions to God to guide expresses our willingness to awaken to the universal Love we are. It leads to the full remembrance of God, our Creator and Source. It is a journey we share with every brother, for we all awaken together.

Awakening from Our Misperceptions

Do you believe that truth can be but some illusions? They are dreams because they are not true. Their equal lack of truth becomes the basis for the miracle, which means that you have understood that dreams are dreams; and that escape depends, not on the dream, but only on awaking. Could it be some dreams are kept, and others wakened from? The choice is not between which dreams to keep, but only if you want to live in dreams or to awaken from them. Thus it is the miracle does not select some dreams to leave untouched by its beneficence. You cannot dream some dreams and wake from some, for you are either sleeping or awake. And dreaming goes with only one of these.

The dreams you think you like would hold you back as much as those in which the fear is seen. For every dream is but a dream of fear, no matter what the form it seems to take. The fear is seen within, without, or both. Or it can be disguised in pleasant form. But never is it absent from the dream, for fear is the material of dreams, from which they all are made. Their form can change, but they cannot be made of something else. The miracle were treacherous indeed if it allowed you still to be afraid because you did not recognize the fear. You would not then be willing to awake, for which the miracle prepares the way. (A Course in Miracles, T-29.IV.1-2. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

At the beginning of the Course we are told that fear and Love are opposites, but only Love is real. Fear can only seem to exist in dreams of lovelessness. Our true Self exists eternally in the oneness of God’s Love. Dreams cannot change what Love is.

The ego is the wish to be separate from universal Love. The best it can offer are loveless dreams that disguise fear in images. Some dreams appeal to us, giving a semblance of happiness and pleasure, or offering protection from other dreams we don’t like. None of these dreams are real and cannot affect What we are in truth. Our true Self is unknown to us while we dream of fear — lovelessness.

The miracle comes when we welcome the Holy Spirit’s correction of our misperceptions. It dispels the ego’s images that hide the Light of Love. We welcome miracles, today, by asking the Holy Spirit to show us the truth beyond our misperceptions. He heals our fear-based thoughts, clearing the way for Love to light our mind and awaken us from dreams of fear.

Voting for the Holy Spirit in Our Mind

The lessons to be learned are only two. Each has its outcome in a different world. And each world follows surely from its source. The certain outcome of the [ego’s] lesson that God’s Son is guilty is the world you see. It is a world of terror and despair. Nor is there hope of happiness in it. There is no plan for safety you can make that ever will succeed. There is no joy that you can seek for here and hope to find. Yet this is not the only outcome which your learning can produce. However much you may have overlearned your chosen task, the lesson that reflects the Love of God is stronger still. And you will learn God’s Son is innocent, and see another world.

The outcome of the lesson that God’s Son is guiltless is a world in which there is no fear, and everything is lit with hope and sparkles with a gentle friendliness. Nothing but calls to you in soft appeal to be your friend, and let it join with you. And never does a call remain unheard, misunderstood, nor left unanswered in the selfsame tongue in which the call was made. And you will understand it was this call that everyone and everything within the world has always made, but you had not perceived it as it was. And now you see you were mistaken. You had been deceived by forms the call [for Love] was hidden in. And so you did not hear it, and had lost a friend who always wanted to be part of you. The soft eternal calling of each part of God’s creation to the whole is heard throughout the world this second lesson brings. (A Course in Miracles, T-31.I.7-8. See also ACIM Text Made Simple.)

We have spent our lives voting for the ego by giving it priority to lead us through “life” in the world. But its leadership has always been based upon a false premise that separation is real. Everything based on a false premise remains as false as the premise. So the ego always leads us to seek where we cannot find the one thing we feel is absent in our life — the changeless Love of God. It is time to let the ego go and free ourselves from its lies.

It is time to vote for the Holy Spirit in our mind as our Leader. All of Its guidance is based upon the changelessness of God’s Love. It always leads us toward that Love, for He is the link in our mind between our true Self and the part of our mind that is still calling for Love. This part of our mind needs to undo the mistaken lessons it has learned that make a loveless world.

Our part in awakening the world to Love’s presence is the practice of daily, moment by moment, giving the Holy Spirit priority in our mind. As we accept His lessons in Love, all minds are blessed, for their unity has been recognized. With the Holy Spirit guiding our thoughts, words and actions, our calls for Love are answered.

Learning the Holy Spirit’s Lessons in Love

If I accept that I am prisoner within a body, in a world in which all things that seem to live appear to die, then is my Father pris­oner with me. And this do I believe, when I maintain the laws the world obeys must I obey; the frailties and the sins which I perceive are real, and cannot be escaped. If I am bound in any way, I do not know my Father nor my Self. And I am lost to all reality. For truth [Love] is free, and what is bound is not a part of truth.

Father, I ask for nothing but the truth. I have had many foolish thoughts about myself and my creation, and have brought a dream of fear [lovelessness] into my mind. Today, I would not dream. I choose the way to You instead of madness and instead of fear. For truth is safe, and only love is sure. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 278, W-pII.278. See also ACIM Lesson 278 Insights.)

The body is an idol made by the ego as a substitute for the Self that God created as His Son. An idol by definition is not real. Belief in an idol seems to give it power but only in the mind of the believer. Only our belief in the body as our identity gives it power to seem to trap us in a limited space, disconnected from anything outside the body and unable to join with anything or anyone. This is the centerpiece of the ego’s scheme to maintain control of the mind that has given allegiance to it. It has no power of its own to trap or control the Son of God.

The key to unlock our self-made prison is to let go of our belief in its reality. We let go of our mistaken beliefs through forgiveness. False beliefs are dismissed the moment we learn they are untrue.

We have been given an inner Teacher Who’s singular mission in our mind is to teach us to sort truth from illusion. To free ourselves, we only need to accept His lessons. We do this with the practice of questioning all our perceptions in the world.

The ego tells you that this task is monumental and overwhelming, so don’t even try. But all we need to do is take one perception at a time to the Holy Spirit by pausing and focusing our attention on the center of peace within. In this peace, our mind is open to the Holy Spirit’s lessons in truth. With these lessons, we are able to recognize that what we saw from the perspective of separation was not true. We lay down that misperception, making way for the Light of Love to shine away its shadow.

Each time we learn one of these lessons, our mind is enlightened by the Light which is magnified around the world in every brother who is forever joined with us in truth. Each time we practice being willing to learn the Holy Spirit’s lesson, the next one is a little easier to welcome.
