Letting Go of Thoughts That Hurt

I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts.

Father, Your Son is perfect. When I think that I am hurt in any way, it is because I have forgotten who I am, and that I am as You created me. Your Thoughts can only bring me happiness. If ever I am sad or hurt or ill, I have forgotten what You think, and put my little meaningless ideas in place of where Your Thoughts belong, and where they are. I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts. The Thoughts I think with You can only bless. The Thoughts I think with You alone are true.

I will not hurt myself today. For I am far beyond all pain. My Father placed me safe in Heaven, watching over me. And I would not attack the Son He loves, for what He loves is also mine to love. (W-pII.281)

God’s Will for us is perfect happiness and perfect peace because He gave us all of His Love. If we perceive any other condition, it can only be because we have covered God’s Thought of Love with a false idea of what we are. Because Love is one, an identity that is separate and distinct unto itself could never be true. It is an idea in opposition to the oneness of God’s Love.

It is only our belief in this false idea that seems to make guilt, fear and illness real. We can learn to recognize the unreality of these thoughts if we are willing to accept our inner Teacher’s lessons. He would teach us that we remain indivisible Love. He would teach us that all we look upon is one with us and thus there is nothing to fear.

Holy Spirit, teach me to see as you see today. Give me your strength to see beyond the veil of separation. Today I would accept Your vision and learn that I remain as God created me along with everyone, for we are God’s one Son.

Accepting True Healing

We will be still and listen for the Voice of healing, which will cure all ills as one, restoring saneness to the Son of God.

We waken hearing Him, and let Him speak to us five minutes as the day begins, and end the day by listening again five minutes more before we go to sleep. Our only preparation is to let our interfering thoughts be laid aside, not separately, but all of them as one. They are the same. We have no need to make them different, and thus delay the time when we can hear our Father speak to us. We hear Him now. We come to Him today.

With nothing in our hands to which we cling, with lifted hearts and listening minds we pray:

Only salvation can be said to cure.
Speak to us, Father, that we may be healed.

And we will feel salvation cover us with soft protection, and with peace so deep that no illusion can disturb our minds, nor offer proof to us that it is real. …This is the day when healing comes to us. The key to hearing the Holy Spirit’s Voice is letting go of our interfering thoughts. This is why forgiveness is a major emphasis of the Course. Our judgments keep us locked into believing the dream is real. The forms of the world we judge as valuable interfere with receiving Holy Spirit’s inspiration. Giving value to form makes us unwilling to look beyond the form and unreceptive to the Holy Spirit’s vision, which sees beyond all form.

Today we remind ourselves that no form in the world offers us anything we really want. We want the peace of God. We want to remember His changeless Love. We want to remember the Truth of What we are, for it is the Truth that sets us free.

If It’s Not Love, Disregard It

You see what you expect, and you expect what you invite. Your perception is the result of your invitation, coming to you as you sent for it. Whose manifestations would you see? Of whose presence would you be convinced? For you will believe in what you manifest, and as you look out so will you see in. Two ways of looking at the world are in your mind, and your perception will reflect the guidance [ego or Holy Spirit] you have chosen.

I am the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, and when you see me it will be because you have invited Him.

When you want only love you will see nothing else. The contradictory nature of the witnesses you perceive is merely the reflection of your conflicting invitations.

The power of decision is your one remaining freedom as a prisoner of this world. You can decide to see it right. …You cannot really give anything but love to anyone or anything, nor can you really receive anything but love from them. All we can really give or receive is Love because only Love is real. If we see another as giving us anything but Love, it is because we have chosen ego as our guide. Being the denial of Love, the ego cannot see Love and will only show us manifestations of lovelessness. If we want to experience Love, we must choose the Guide Who knows what Love is and wants you to know It.

To choose the Guide to Love, we must choose to turn over all our judgments to Him. He will always judge for us by choosing the reality of Love and disregarding everything else. Under His guidance we will become messengers of Love, bringing healing to our brothers and ourselves. We will find the Love we seek and rest in Love’s peace and happiness. This is how we bring salvation to ourselves and the world.

Distinguishing the Valuable from the Valueless

Each choice you make brings everything to you or nothing. Therefore, if you learn the tests by which you can distinguish everything from nothing, you will make the better choice.

First, if you choose a thing that will not last forever, what you chose is valueless. A temporary value is without all value. Time can never take away a value that is real.

Next, if you choose to take a thing away from someone else, you will have nothing left.

Your next consideration is the one on which the others rest. Why is the choice you make of value to you? What attracts your mind to it? What purpose does it serve?

If you feel any guilt about your choice, you have allowed the ego’s goals to come between the real alternatives.

Heaven itself is reached with empty hands and open minds, which come with nothing to find everything and claim it as their own. We will attempt to reach this state today, with self-deception laid aside, and with an honest willingness to value but the truly valuable and the real.…

I will not value what is valueless,
and only what has value do I seek,

The more we recognize what has true value, the simpler our choices become. The Course is teaching us that no form in the world has any value of its own. In our journey of awakening, all value comes from the purpose that serves our awakening.

The practice of asking the Holy Spirit of everything, “What is this for? What is its purpose?” helps us recognize what choice is truly helpful. The Holy Spirit will guide us to all things that are helpful and will not keep us tied to the ego thought system. He will lead us away from things we think we need because we believe in the ego’s values and have mistaken them for our own.

The Holy Spirit never asks us to sacrifice. But if we think we need something because of the ego’s dictates, we will believe it is a sacrifice to give it up. Thus the Holy Spirit needs to teach us to recognize the valuelessness of what we have mistakenly valued. He needs our willingness. We need to come to Him with empty hands and open hearts to receive His kind and loving teaching that will lead us to everything of value.

Welcoming Holy Spirit’s Healing Lessons

The Son of God has both Father and Son, because he is both Father and Son. To unite having and being is to unite your will with His, for He wills you Himself. And you will yourself to Him because, in your perfect understanding of Him, you know there is but one Will. Yet when you attack any part of God and His Kingdom your understanding is not perfect, and what you really want is therefore lost to you.

Healing thus becomes a lesson in understanding, and the more you practice it the better teacher and learner you become.”

Healing is a sign that you want to make whole. And this willingness opens your ears to the Voice of the Holy Spirit, Whose message is wholeness. He will enable you to go far beyond the healing you would undertake, for beside your small willingness to make whole He will lay His Own complete Will and make yours whole. What can the Son of God not accomplish with the Fatherhood of God in him? And yet the invitation must come from you, for you have surely learned that whom you invite as your guest will abide with you. (A Course in Miracles, T-11.II.1:3-2:1;4. See also ACIM Text Q & A.)

The Holy Spirit is always with us, ready to guide us to healing and wholeness. But we are unaware of His presence while we focus our attention on the ego thought system of separation. While we are under the influence of the ego, our awareness is selective, carefully excluding thoughts that remind us we remain at one with God. We are choosing the ego as our guide.

But the moment we give even a little willingness to receive the Holy Spirit’s lessons, the Holy Spirit adds His willingness to make us whole. He shares His strength with us and His Light shines away the shadows of the ego’s denial. Each time we bring our unhealed thoughts to the Holy Spirit, the lesson that we remain as God created us, whole and at one with Him, becomes clearer in our mind. We bring this healing lesson to the world as we learn it for ourselves. This is our function. This is our practice today.

Teaching Truth By Demonstration

The world is an illusion. Those who choose to come to it are seeking for a place where they can be illusions, and avoid their own reality. Yet when they find their own reality is even here, then they step back and let it lead the way. …To let illusion sink behind the truth and let the truth stand forth as what it is, is merely sanity.

This is the simple choice we make today. The mad illusion will remain awhile in evidence, for those to look upon who chose to come, and have not yet rejoiced to find they were mistaken in their choice. They cannot learn directly from the truth, because they have denied that it is so. And so they need a Teacher Who perceives their madness, but Who still can look beyond illusion to the simple truth in them.

Step back in faith and let truth lead the way. You know not where you go. But One Who knows goes with you. Let Him lead you with the rest. (A Course in Miracles Workbook Lesson 155, W-pI.155.2:1-3,6;3;10:3-6. See also ACIM Lesson 155 Insights.)

In the world it seems that we are vulnerable to myriad forms of threats to our well being. We spend our days building defenses to protect our little domains and seeking for love to fill the perceived lack of love. Yet this is all illusion, for we remain Love as Love created us, safe and whole.

We need help from One Who sees what we perceive but does not believe in the illusion of isolation and vulnerability in the world. This is our inner Teacher Who goes with us, always ready to help us see the truth beyond the illusion. As we learn to accept the Truth as true, the illusion fades and Truth lights our way. As we practice following the way of Truth — the way of Love — we demonstrate that we can free ourselves from the hell of belief in separation. We teach by our demonstration and bring our brothers with us as we step back and let Truth lead the way.

Letting Ourselves Be Healed

Healing, forgiveness, and the [exchange of joy for sadness], are the means by which the Holy Spirit urges you to follow Him. His gentle lessons teach how easily salvation can be yours; how little practice you need undertake to let His laws replace the ones you made to hold yourself a prisoner to death. [Holy Spirit’s] life becomes your own, as you extend the little help He asks in freeing you from everything that ever caused you pain.

And as you let yourself be healed, you see all those around you, or who cross your mind, or whom you touch or those who seem to have no contact with you, healed along with you. Perhaps you will not recognize them all, nor realize how great your offering to all the world, when you let healing come to you. But you are never healed alone. And legions upon legions will receive the gift that you receive when you are healed.

When I am healed I am not healed alone.
And I would bless my brothers, for I would

To let ourselves be healed we only need to stop defending against healing. Identifying with the ego thought system and the body is a defense against healing. Healing cannot come from the thought system of separation, which is the source of a sick mind and body.

Healing comes from the Holy Spirit, the part of our mind that knows the truth and does not believe in separation. The practice of choosing the Holy Spirit as our Guide moment by moment welcomes His kind lessons in truth. It is the acceptance of truth in our mind that brings healing to the world.

Today we dedicate to the practice of letting Holy Spirit guide all our perceptions. With His help we will see past our old judgments. We will see past the illusionary images that seem to threaten us. We will see past the shadows of the ego to the Light of Love in everyone and in everything.
